6 – I Returned Home With More Questions Than Answers, and the First Thing I Did Was Open the Drawer Where Walt Had Kept His Old Papers

I did not sleep well that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the three letters on Danny's table.

I heard Michael asking when we could leave.

I heard Stephanie insisting that her father could not have meant what he had written.

And I heard Danny reading the words slowly, as though he was afraid to misunderstand them.

By morning, I was tired enough to admit something I had been avoiding.

The letters had not created the distance between my children.

They had brought it into the open.

I made coffee and sat at the kitchen table.

Walt's mug stood beside the sink.

I had washed it the night before the meeting and put it away, but now I took it out again.

I poured coffee into it.

The handle felt familiar beneath my fingers.

For a moment, I imagined Walt sitting across from me, reading the newspaper and pretending not to notice that I had stolen the last piece of toast.

Then the chair remained empty.

I set the mug down.

I could not keep living inside memories.

Not if I wanted to understand what was happening to my family.

After breakfast, I opened the desk drawer where Walt had kept his important papers.

I had searched it before, but only for documents related to the financial accounts.

This time, I looked at everything.

There were insurance forms.

Old receipts.

A small notebook with telephone numbers written in Walt's cramped handwriting.

There were birthday cards he had never sent and envelopes containing photographs of the children when they were young.

I found one of Michael at a school event, standing proudly beside a cardboard model of a building.

Another showed Stephanie in a summer dress, holding a flower she had picked from our garden.

Then I found a photograph of Danny.

He was about eight years old, sitting on Walt's shoulders.

Both of them were laughing.

I sat down with that photograph in my hand.

I had forgotten how young Danny had looked beside his father.

Back then, he had followed Walt everywhere.

He wanted to help repair the fence.

He wanted to hold the flashlight while Walt worked beneath the car.

He wanted to be included, even when the task was too difficult for him.

Sometimes Walt became impatient.

Sometimes he told Danny to go inside because he was getting in the way.

But Danny always came back.

I placed the photograph on the desk.

Then I returned to the papers.

Behind an old tax folder, I found a small envelope with my name written on it.

It was not sealed.

Inside was a short note.

Walt had written it several years earlier.

He reminded me where to find a document concerning the house and asked me to keep it somewhere safe.

Nothing unusual.

Nothing that explained the letters.

Still, I read it twice.

I was searching for a reason to believe my husband had left me some kind of map.

A set of instructions.

Something that would help me understand what he had been thinking.

I found no such thing.

By lunchtime, I had made a mess of the desk.

Papers covered the surface.

The notebook lay open beside the photograph.

I had found no explanation for the financial losses, no hidden answer to the letters, and no message that made everything seem simpler.

I put the documents back where they belonged.

Then I called Michael.

He answered after several rings.

"Hi, Mom."

"Do you have a minute?"

"I'm between meetings."

"I won't keep you long."

He sighed.

"Okay."

I asked whether he had thought more about his father's letter.

There was a pause.

"I don't really know what to say about it."

"You don't have to say anything special."

"Mom, I just don't want us turning this into something bigger than it is."

I looked at the empty chair across from me.

"What do you think it is?"

He did not answer immediately.

"I think Dad was trying to make a point."

"What point?"

Another pause.

"That we should take care of you."

The answer surprised me.

It was the first time Michael had spoken about my situation without mentioning his own expenses.

I wanted to believe that meant something had changed.

Then he added that he and Jenna would discuss whether they could help me with some of my bills.

I thanked him.

We spoke for another minute about ordinary things.

Then he had to go.

I put the phone down.

It was a beginning.

Not a solution.

But a beginning.

Stephanie called that afternoon.

She sounded less angry than she had the night before.

"Mom, I've been thinking about what happened."

"So have I."

"I shouldn't have raised my voice."

I leaned back in my chair.

"Thank you for saying that."

She was quiet.

Then she asked whether I had spoken to Michael.

I told her I had.

She wanted to know what he had said.

I explained that he was going to discuss the situation with Jenna.

Stephanie made a small sound.

"I suppose we all need to figure out what we can do."

I agreed.

She did not offer anything specific.

Neither did I ask.

For the first time, I understood that there was a difference between allowing people time and pretending their hesitation did not hurt.

I could do the first without doing the second.

Before we ended the call, Stephanie apologized again.

I told her I loved her.

She said she loved me too.

After we hung up, I sat quietly for a while.

I wanted those words to be enough.

Some days, they might be.

Other days, love would need to show up in a more practical form.

A visit.

A meal.

A phone call made when nobody needed anything.

I was beginning to understand that family was not only about what people felt.

It was also about what they were willing to do with those feelings.

That evening, Danny called.

He asked whether I had eaten.

I told him I had.

He asked whether I was sure.

I laughed.

"Yes, Danny. I really did."

He sounded relieved.

Then he told me that he had put the letters away in a safe place.

I asked whether he had read his again.

"No."

"Why not?"

He was quiet for a moment.

"I want to think about what Dad said before I read it again."

I understood.

I had spent the day doing the same thing.

We spoke about the boys, the weather, and a small repair Danny needed to make at home.

Then he said something that stayed with me.

"Mom, I don't think Dad expected us to understand everything in one evening."

I looked toward the desk.

The old photograph of Danny and Walt lay beside the notebook.

"Maybe you're right."

After we hung up, I returned the photograph to the drawer.

I left the notebook on the desk.

For the first time since my husband's death, I did not feel the need to solve everything before going to bed.

I could wait until morning.

I could ask questions one at a time.

And I could stop pretending that uncertainty meant I had failed.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: The Next Family Visit Felt Different From the First, Because We Were No Longer Pretending That Everything Could Be Fixed With One Conversation

I did not sleep well that night.
