I'm asking you to explain."

Stephanie looked down at her hands.

Michael shifted in his chair.

Jenna remained silent.

The room felt smaller than it had when we arrived.

I could hear a toy rolling across the floor in the next room.

Then Ethan called for his father.

Danny answered that he would be there in a minute.

He did not stand up.

He kept his eyes on the table.

I realized that he, too, was waiting for something.

Perhaps he was waiting for his brother and sister to stop fighting.

Perhaps he was waiting for me to say what I really thought.

Or perhaps he was waiting for the moment when he would have to open the envelope with his name on it.

I looked at him.

"Danny, do you want to read yours?"

He raised his eyes.

For the first time that evening, I saw how nervous he was.

"I don't know, Mom."

That answer surprised me.

He had been the one insisting that we follow Walt's instructions.

Now he seemed reluctant to take the next step.

I understood.

Whatever was inside that envelope might change the way he remembered his father.

It might change the way all of us remembered him.

I reached across the table and rested my hand beside the sealed paper.

"You don't have to rush."

Danny nodded.

Michael seized on my words.

"Exactly. We can come back to this."

But I shook my head.

"I didn't say we should stop."

He stared at me.

I had rarely contradicted him so directly.

Perhaps he was beginning to realize that the mother who had spent years smoothing over family disagreements was no longer certain that keeping everyone comfortable was the most important thing.

I looked at the letters.

"Your father made these arrangements before he died. I don't know why he did it this way, but I think we owe him the chance to finish what he started."

Stephanie pressed her lips together.

Michael looked toward the door.

I knew he wanted to leave.

I also knew he would feel guilty if he did.

That was the trouble with family.

Sometimes we stayed because we loved one another.

Sometimes we stayed because leaving would make us look bad.

I could not tell which reason was keeping my oldest son in his chair.

Then he reached for his letter.

He unfolded it once more and read silently.

His expression changed.

It was not dramatic.

He did not gasp.

He did not slam the paper down.

He simply became very still.

Jenna noticed.

"What is it?"

Michael folded the letter and slipped it back into the envelope.

"Nothing."

I looked at him.

"Michael."

He met my eyes briefly.

"I said it's nothing."

The sharpness in his voice made Jenna pull her hand away from his arm.

I had seen that expression before.

It was the look Michael wore when someone had asked a question he did not want to answer.

When he was younger, I used to mistake it for determination.

Now I wondered whether I had sometimes mistaken defensiveness for strength.

Stephanie watched him closely.

"You read something else, didn't you?"

"No."

"Then why did your face change?"

"Can we stop doing this?"

He pushed his chair back a few inches.

I looked at the clock again.

It was still early enough for Michael to make his dinner reservation.

I wondered whether he was thinking about it.

I wondered whether he was calculating how long he could remain before the evening became too uncomfortable to tolerate.

I hated myself for noticing.

Then I remembered the way Danny had stayed on the telephone while I cried.

He had not known what I needed.

He had simply understood that I needed someone to remain.

I looked at my oldest son and felt the difference between those two moments.

It hurt.

But it was real.

Stephanie picked up her letter again.

"I'm not reading mine a second time."

"Nobody asked you to," Michael replied.

She gave him an angry look.

"You're the one trying to leave."

"I'm trying to keep this from becoming a disaster."

"What disaster?"

Michael did not answer.

Jenna lowered her eyes.

I wondered whether she knew something I did not.

Perhaps she had heard Michael speak about his father's letters before the meeting.

Perhaps she was simply as confused as the rest of us.

I had no way of knowing.

Danny finally placed Noah carefully in Kayla's arms.

The boy stirred, but Kayla held him close and began rocking him.

Danny returned to his chair.

He picked up the cream-colored envelope.

For a moment, he examined the red seal.

Then he placed it back on the table.

"I want to read it," he said.

Michael looked at him.

"Then read it."

Danny ignored the tone.

He turned toward me.

"But I think we should do this properly."

"What do you mean?"

He glanced at the two opened letters.

"Everyone should understand what Dad wanted us to do before we start making assumptions."

I nodded slowly.

He was right.

We had arrived expecting answers.

Instead, we were already arguing about what the answers might mean.

I looked at Stephanie.

"Would you read your letter again?"

She stared at me.

"I just told you I wouldn't."

"I know."

"Then why are you asking?"

"Because I want to hear it clearly. I don't want to judge your father's words based on a few sentences and a lot of anger."

She looked away.

For several seconds, I thought she would refuse.

Then she picked up the paper.

Michael closed his eyes briefly.

Jenna folded her hands in her lap.

Danny sat forward.

And I waited.

Stephanie began again.

This time, she read more slowly.

Her voice was quieter.

She did not stop to complain about the wording.

She did not interrupt herself with questions.

She simply read what her father had written.

I listened carefully.

I did not yet understand everything.

But I began to see why the letter had unsettled her.

It was not the kind of message she had expected from a father who had recently died.

It did not offer the reassurance she wanted.

It did not allow her to dismiss the evening as a routine family gathering.

It asked her to consider something she would rather avoid.

When she finished, she placed the letter in front of her.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Michael.

He stared at the tabletop.

Then I looked at Danny.

His eyes were fixed on the sealed envelope.

I could no longer pretend that this was simply a discussion about money.

Whatever Walt had wanted to tell his children, it was important enough that he had arranged for them to hear it after his death.

And the fact that he had given Danny a separate, sealed letter suggested that he had something specific to say to our youngest son.

I did not know what it was.

I did not know whether it would bring relief or pain.

But I knew we could not keep avoiding it.

Danny lifted the envelope again.

His thumb rested beside the red seal.

He looked at me.

"Are you ready, Mom?"

I took a breath.

"No," I told him honestly. "But I think we need to do it anyway."

He nodded.

Then he broke the seal.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Red Seal Broke Beneath Danny’s Fingers, and the Silence Around That Table Told Me We Were About to Learn Something None of Us Could Ignore

For a moment, nobody moved.
