I knew him my whole life."

The words stung more than she realized.

I had known him for more than four decades.

I had shared his worries, his meals, his illnesses, and his quietest moments.

Yet I could not tell her what he had written.

I could not explain why he had chosen to leave these letters.

And I could not make her believe that the handwriting on the page belonged to the same man whose photograph still sat on my mantel.

Michael folded his letter once.

Then he unfolded it again.

"Mom, I think we should take a minute."

His voice had changed.

The impatience was still there, but now something else had entered it.

Uneasiness.

I watched him glance at Jenna.

She gave him a small, questioning look.

He shook his head slightly.

I wondered what he was trying to tell her.

Stephanie placed her letter on the table.

Her fingers remained on the paper.

"How could he write something like this?"

I took a breath.

"I don't know what it says, Stephanie."

She stared at me.

"You're telling me you don't know?"

"I haven't read your letter."

"But you arranged this meeting."

"Danny arranged it because your father asked him to."

"Then why are we here?"

I had no answer that would satisfy her.

We were there because Walt had wanted his children to receive those letters together.

We were there because he had made plans that none of us fully understood.

We were there because I had spent weeks feeling frightened and alone, hoping that my family might help me find a way forward.

I had not expected a fight.

I had not expected my daughter's voice to sound so angry.

And I certainly had not expected my oldest son to look as though he wished he had never come.

Danny finally spoke.

"Why don't we read what's there before we decide anything?"

Stephanie turned toward him.

"You haven't even opened yours."

"No."

"Then how can you tell us what to do?"

"I'm not telling you what to do."

He spoke calmly.

That seemed to make her angrier.

Michael rubbed his forehead.

"Can we please keep this reasonable?"

I almost laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because Michael had always been the one who demanded that everyone behave reasonably whenever a conversation became uncomfortable.

He had a way of treating emotions as obstacles to be cleared before business could continue.

I had spent years accommodating that habit.

I wasn't sure I could do it anymore.

Stephanie lifted her paper again.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then she stopped.

She looked at Michael.

He gave her a brief nod.

Whatever they had read, it had affected them in the same way.

I felt a familiar fear rising in my chest.

I had spent weeks worrying about money.

Now I was beginning to worry about something I could not measure in dollars.

My family was sitting around a cheap folding table, with three letters between us and a dead man's handwriting on every page.

And nobody was looking at me as though they knew what to do next.

I glanced toward the living room.

Ethan was still playing on the carpet.

He looked up when his aunt pushed her chair back.

"Aunt Stephanie, are you mad?"

The question stopped everyone.

Stephanie looked at him.

For a moment, her expression softened.

Then Kayla appeared beside him.

"Come on, Ethan. Let's go check on your brother."

She guided him toward the bedroom, keeping her voice gentle.

Noah stirred against Danny's chest but did not wake.

I watched Kayla lead Ethan away.

She had noticed the tension before the rest of us admitted it.

When she returned, she quietly closed the door between the living room and the kitchen.

It was a small gesture.

A mother's instinct.

She wanted to keep the children from hearing whatever happened next.

I wished someone had thought to do the same for me when I was young.

I wished someone had told me that grown people could hurt one another without raising their voices.

I wished I had understood earlier that families sometimes carried secrets for so long that nobody remembered how to speak about them.

Stephanie sat down again.

She smoothed the paper with her palm.

"Mom, Dad wouldn't have meant this the way it's written."

I looked at her.

"Then let's hear what he meant."

She hesitated.

Michael leaned back in his chair.

"Maybe we should read these later."

I turned toward him.

"Why?"

"Because we're all upset."

"Then perhaps reading the letters is exactly what we need to do."

He looked at me as if he had not expected me to disagree.

I surprised myself, too.

For most of my marriage, I had been the person who tried to keep the peace.

If Walt became quiet, I gave him time.

If Michael became impatient, I changed the subject.

If Stephanie grew angry, I waited until she felt better.

I had mistaken silence for kindness.

Sometimes silence was only fear wearing a polite face.

I did not want to spend the rest of my life doing that.

Stephanie looked down at her letter.

Her shoulders rose and fell.

Then she picked it up again.

"Fine."

She glanced at Michael, who gave a small shake of his head.

But she had already made her decision.

She would read it aloud.

I folded my hands in my lap.

The paper trembled slightly between her fingers.

For the first time since arriving at Danny's house, I noticed that her anger seemed to be covering something else.

She was frightened.

Not of me.

Not of Danny.

Of what the letter might mean.

I understood that feeling.

I had been frightened ever since the financial adviser explained how much we had lost.

I had simply learned to hide it better.

Stephanie began reading.

Her voice was tight at first.

She stumbled over a sentence, stopped, and started again.

Michael stared at the table.

Jenna remained very still beside him.

Danny listened without interrupting, one arm supporting Noah.

I watched my daughter read the words her father had left for her.

I could not see the entire page from where I sat.

I could only see the way her fingers tightened around its edges.

The longer she read, the more uncomfortable she became.

Once, she looked up as though she expected me to explain something.

I did not.

Another time, she stopped and pressed her lips together.

I waited.

She continued.

I wanted to hear every word.

I wanted to understand what Walt had thought important enough to leave behind.

I wanted to know why he had chosen this moment to speak.

And I wanted to know whether the man I had loved for forty-two years had seen something in our children that I had refused to see.

Stephanie reached the end of the page.

She did not put it down.

Instead, she read the final lines again, more slowly.

Then she lowered the letter.

Her eyes were bright, but she did not cry.

I had seen Stephanie cry many times.

When she was a child, she cried over scraped knees and broken toys.

As a teenager, she cried when friendships ended.

As an adult, she cried when life disappointed her.

But that evening, she looked as though she had decided that tears would give something away.

Michael cleared his throat.

"I think we've heard enough for tonight."

I turned to him.

"Have we?"

He looked at me.

"Mom, this isn't helping anyone."

I wanted to ask him what would help.

I wanted to ask whether he had come to support me or merely to complete a task his father had left behind.

But I stopped myself.

I was beginning to understand that the answers I wanted might not come from asking the right questions.

Sometimes people showed you what they believed through the choices they made when they were uncomfortable.

Michael had not yet made his choice.

Neither had Stephanie.

Danny, however, had done something I would never forget.

He had opened his home.

He had gathered the family.

And he had stayed seated when everyone else wanted to escape the moment.

I looked at his unopened envelope.

The red seal was still intact.

I wondered what Walt had written inside it.

I wondered whether Danny was afraid to find out.

Then I looked at my daughter.

She was still holding her letter.

"Stephanie," I said, "would you tell me why you're so upset?"

She stared at me.

For several seconds, I thought she might answer.

Instead, she placed the paper flat on the table.

"Because I don't think Dad understood what he was saying."

It was the first time that evening she had spoken without shouting.

I heard the fear beneath her words.

I also heard something else.

She did not want to believe the letter.

That was different from not understanding it.

I looked at Michael.

He avoided my eyes.

Then I looked at Danny.

He was still holding his sleeping son.

His unopened envelope lay in front of him, the red wax catching the light from the kitchen lamp.

I had come to Danny's house hoping for reassurance.

Instead, I was beginning to see how much of our family had remained unspoken even while Walt was alive.

The letters had not answered my questions.

They had made the questions harder to avoid.

And for the first time since my husband's funeral, I was afraid that learning the truth might cost me more than money.

Click here to continue reading: PART
