I asked.

Sarah turned toward me.

"The kitchen drawer is stuck again."

I glanced at the drawer.

It was the one beneath the counter where we kept the utensils.

The wooden front had been loose for months.

I had told Sarah I would fix it.

I had also told her that the problem could wait until the weekend.

Apparently, the weekend had come and gone more than once.

I felt the familiar irritation rise.

"I said I'd look at it."

Sarah set down the spoon.

"I know."

Her answer was quiet.

That should have made it easier to let the matter go.

Instead, I heard criticism in it.

I was ready to defend myself.

Then I remembered my father's letter.

I looked at the drawer again.

The boys were watching me.

I took off my jacket and rolled up my sleeves.

"Let me see."

The drawer came loose when I pulled it.

One of the runners had slipped out of place.

It took less than ten minutes to fix.

When I pushed the drawer closed, it moved smoothly.

"There."

Sarah smiled.

"Thank you."

I nodded and washed my hands.

Nothing remarkable had happened.

Yet I knew how easily that small moment could have become another argument.

I could have complained about being tired.

I could have reminded Sarah how much I had done that day.

I could have made a loose drawer into proof that nobody appreciated me.

I had done those things before.

The drawer had not changed.

I had.

At least, I was trying to.

We ate dinner together.

The boys talked about school, and Sarah told me about something that had happened at the grocery store.

I listened.

Not perfectly.

Twice, I caught myself thinking about work while someone was speaking.

Both times, I brought my attention back.

It took effort.

I hadn't realized how often I had been physically present while mentally somewhere else.

After dinner, my oldest son helped his brother with the dishes.

I carried the remaining plates to the sink.

Sarah looked at me with a small, uncertain smile.

I understood why.

She had seen me make promises before.

She didn't yet know whether this change would last.

I couldn't blame her for waiting to see.

Later that evening, I found her folding laundry in the living room.

The old chair stood beside the window.

She had placed a small cushion on it.

I sat on the sofa across from her.

"Can I ask you something?"

She folded a shirt and placed it on the pile.

"Of course."

"When Dad lived here, did you ever feel like I left too much of his care to you?"

She stopped folding.

For a moment, I thought she might tell me that everything had been fine.

Instead, she looked down at the shirt in her hands.

"Sometimes."

I nodded.

"Why didn't you say more?"

She gave a tired smile.

"I did."

The answer hurt because I knew it was true.

She had asked me to help with appointments.

She had asked me to sit with my father when she needed a break.

She had asked me not to discuss every medical expense in front of the boys.

I had heard those requests.

I had often answered them by explaining how busy I was.

I had treated an explanation as though it were a solution.

Sarah placed the shirt on the pile.

"I knew you were working hard, David. I never thought you were doing nothing."

I looked at her.

"But you were carrying things I didn't see."

She nodded.

"I was."

I felt ashamed.

Not because she was trying to make me feel bad.

Because she had been telling me the truth for years, and I had only recently become willing to hear it.

"I'm sorry."

She looked at me.

This time, I didn't rush to explain myself.

"I should have helped you more."

She took a breath.

"Yes, you should have."

I accepted the answer.

It wasn't the kind of conversation I would once have wanted.

I would have preferred her to say that I had done enough.

I would have preferred to leave the past behind without examining it.

But that would have meant asking Sarah to carry my guilt as well as everything else.

She didn't need another burden.

She needed a husband who could listen.

I moved to the other end of the sofa and helped fold the remaining clothes.

We worked quietly.

Every now and then, she handed me something that needed to be turned right side out.

I did it without complaining.

When we finished, she leaned back against the cushions.

"I miss him sometimes," she said.

"So do I."

"He could be stubborn."

I smiled.

"He taught me how to be stubborn."

Sarah laughed softly.

For a moment, the sadness eased.

Then she looked toward the chair beside the window.

"He was grateful for what we did."

"I know."

"I think he also knew when things were hard for you."

I nodded.

The letter had made that clear.

But Sarah had something else to say.

"He didn't always need you to fix anything. Sometimes he just wanted you to sit with him."

I looked at the empty chair.

I remembered the times I had passed through the living room while my father sat there.

He would ask me to sit for a minute.

I would say I was busy.

Sometimes I promised to come back.

Sometimes I did.

Too often, I didn't.

"I wish I'd understood that sooner."

Sarah reached over and took my hand.

"I do too."

She didn't tell me there was nothing to regret.

She didn't tell me to stop thinking about it.

She simply stayed beside me.

And for once, I understood that comfort did not require pretending the truth was less painful than it was.

The following morning, I left for work as usual.

Before I went, I stopped by the living room.

The chair was still beside the window.

I adjusted it slightly so it faced the yard.

Then I picked up my keys.

At the door, I turned back toward the house.

The clock ticked steadily in the hallway.

I had spent years believing that being responsible meant carrying every burden without complaint.

Now I was beginning to understand that responsibility also meant noticing when someone else was carrying too much.

I stepped outside.

There was still work to do.

And this time, I intended to do more than the work I could measure.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: When I Finally Asked Sarah What Those Years Had Been Like for Her, I Learned That Silence Had Hidden More Than I Ever Knew

The first real test came on a Tuesday evening.
