11 – The More I Remembered My Brother’s Silence About the Key, the Less Willing I Became to Explain My Decision Again

I had expected anger from Mitch.

What I hadn't expected was how much his refusal to explain himself would stay with me.

I kept replaying that part of the confrontation.

Not the whole argument.

Just the moment when I asked him what he had been doing.

It was the simplest question I could have asked.

He had already claimed the recording didn't establish that he damaged my SUV.

He had already said the angle made it impossible to know exactly what happened.

So I gave him the chance to tell me.

I asked for his version.

There should have been something.

A reason.

An explanation.

Even a claim that I had misunderstood an ordinary action.

But nothing came.

He started to answer.

Then stopped.

I didn't know what to make of his thoughts.

I wasn't inside his head.

Maybe he was searching for something to say.

Maybe he didn't want to answer.

Maybe he expected the conversation to move on before he had to explain.

I couldn't know.

What I did know was that he had been willing to criticize my evidence but unwilling or unable to give an account of his own conduct.

That was enough to tell me the conversation wasn't going anywhere.

I had spent years trying to understand Mitch's reasoning.

Sometimes I believed that if I could discover why he acted a certain way, I could avoid another disagreement.

If I knew what upset him, perhaps I could say things differently.

If I understood what he wanted, perhaps I could find a compromise.

But I had started to see the problem with that approach.

I was always trying to prevent the next conflict.

And Mitch wasn't necessarily trying to do the same.

I couldn't prove what he intended in every disagreement.

I didn't need to.

I only had to look at what was happening now.

I had said no to fifteen thousand dollars.

My SUV had been damaged.

The recording showed Mitch using a key against the paint.

And he wouldn't acknowledge it.

Those facts were enough.

I didn't need a complete explanation of his personality to decide what happened to my car.

I didn't need to know why he thought denying the footage was reasonable.

I didn't need to establish exactly when he began expecting continued use of the other vehicle.

I only needed to recognize that I was no longer willing to provide it.

That understanding came slowly.

I had to keep separating the things I could decide from the things I could only wish for.

I could wish Mitch would apologize.

I couldn't make it happen.

I could wish Dad would understand my reasons.

I couldn't decide what Dad believed.

I could wish the scratches had never happened.

I couldn't change the recording.

But I could reclaim my car.

That was within my control.

I thought again about the driver.

He had been the only person I needed to ask a practical question.

Was the vehicle secured?

Yes.

That was it.

The answer was clear.

There was no argument about what the word meant.

No debate about whether I had asked the right question.

No attempt to change the subject.

He had confirmed that the car was ready.

And I had thanked him.

I hadn't realized how relieved I would feel by such an ordinary exchange.

It reminded me that not every conversation had to become a struggle over what was obvious.

Sometimes a question received an answer.

Sometimes an instruction had a straightforward result.

Sometimes people accepted that a decision had already been made.

With Mitch, I had forgotten how simple those things could be.

I knew it was unfair to expect every interaction with him to be difficult.

But I also couldn't ignore the one in front of me.

The issue wasn't imaginary.

The scratches weren't imaginary.

And the conflict over money wasn't imaginary.

I had to deal with the circumstances as they were.

Not as I wished they could be.

I thought about what I had originally wanted from confronting him.

An admission.

That was all.

I didn't need him to make a speech.

I didn't need a long apology.

I only wanted him to acknowledge what happened.

Looking back, I can see how much hope I had placed in that possibility.

I imagined that if he admitted it, the argument could become a conversation about responsibility.

We could stop fighting over whether anything had happened.

We could face the damage itself.

But he refused to take that first step.

And I had allowed his refusal to keep me arguing far longer than I wanted.

Not anymore.

I wasn't going to make the return of my car conditional on an admission.

That would have given Mitch another way to control the outcome.

He could keep denying the damage.

And I would keep waiting.

He could continue disputing the video.

And I would continue explaining.

The car might remain in his possession simply because he never said the words I wanted to hear.

I wasn't willing to make that bargain.

I owned the vehicle.

I had already decided to take it back.

The driver had secured it.

The decision didn't need Mitch's agreement.

It didn't need a confession.

And it didn't need a perfect ending to the argument.

I had spent too long believing that every family disagreement needed a resolution everyone accepted.

Maybe that was why I had found boundaries so difficult.

I thought a decision was unfinished if someone remained angry.

I thought I had to keep explaining until the other person understood.

But I was beginning to learn that people could disagree with me and still have to respect my decisions about my own property.

Mitch didn't have to like what I was doing.

Dad didn't have to approve.

I could feel disappointed that things had reached this point.

All of that could be true at once.

I didn't need to choose between being a decent family member and protecting what belonged to me.

I had helped Mitch for two years.

That help had been real.

It didn't disappear because I chose to end it.

And ending it didn't make the original help a mistake.

What would have been a mistake was continuing out of fear that he would be angry.

I couldn't keep doing that.

The car remained secured.

The driver had my answer.

And Mitch's silence about the key no longer had the power to delay my decision.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: I Was Still Angry About My SUV, but I Had Stopped Waiting for My Brother to
