10 – Dad Had Tried to End the Argument With One Order, but I Could Not Ignore Everything That Order Asked Me to Overlook

I kept thinking about Dad stepping between us.

It had happened so quickly.

One moment, I was asking Mitch to explain the key.

The next, Dad was telling us to stop.

The question never received an answer.

That bothered me.

I hadn't been asking something complicated.

I hadn't demanded that Mitch explain his entire life.

I had asked him what he was doing beside my SUV.

He had been visible on the recording.

His hand had been against the paint.

A key was involved.

And the contact had continued for ninety seconds.

If he believed I had misunderstood, he could have told me what actually happened.

He didn't.

Dad's interruption ended the opportunity.

I couldn't know whether Mitch would eventually have found an explanation.

I wasn't going to invent one for him.

I only knew what happened in front of me.

He disputed the evidence.

I asked for an explanation.

He couldn't provide one.

Then Dad stepped in.

That sequence mattered.

It mattered because I didn't want to remember the confrontation as though Mitch had been denied a chance to speak.

He hadn't.

I had given him that chance.

I had listened when he challenged the recording.

I had allowed him to explain why he thought the camera angle made the footage unreliable.

I had asked him to say what he had actually been doing.

And there had been silence.

I hadn't shouted over an explanation.

I hadn't refused to listen.

There simply wasn't an answer.

That was when Dad intervened.

He wanted the argument to stop.

I could understand that much.

Nobody enjoys standing between two family members who are furious with each other.

I didn't enjoy being one of them.

I didn't want to argue with Mitch.

I didn't want to argue with Dad.

I wanted the situation to be acknowledged for what it was.

But Dad had moved straight to the car on the flatbed.

That was what he wanted changed.

Not the scratches.

Not Mitch's denial.

Not the question Mitch hadn't answered.

The car.

I thought about how easy it would have been to follow that instruction.

I could have told the driver to unload it.

The immediate disagreement over taking it back might have ended.

Dad might have been satisfied with that decision.

Mitch might have been relieved.

I didn't know.

But I knew what it would have meant for me.

I would have reversed a decision about my own property because other people objected to it.

I would have allowed the arrangement to continue even though I no longer wanted it.

And I would have done that without receiving any explanation for the damage to my SUV.

I couldn't accept that.

Not anymore.

I hadn't reached the decision lightly.

I had allowed Mitch to drive my car for two years.

That wasn't a minor favor.

It was a continuing arrangement.

One that had gone on long enough to become part of our lives.

But I hadn't agreed to let him have it forever.

I hadn't transferred ownership simply by allowing him to use it.

And I hadn't promised that nothing he did could cause me to reconsider.

Those facts remained true regardless of how upset he became.

I kept coming back to the same question.

What exactly was I supposed to do?

Pretend the key hadn't touched my SUV?

Pretend the scratches weren't there?

Pretend Mitch had answered when I confronted him?

I couldn't do any of those things.

The recording existed.

The damage existed.

And the argument had happened.

I had been there.

I had heard what he said.

I had watched him fail to answer.

I wasn't willing to rewrite those moments just to make the next few minutes easier.

I thought about Dad's words.

He had told us the argument was enough.

Maybe it was.

I wasn't interested in continuing it either.

But I didn't accept that ending the conversation required me to undo my decision.

Those were different matters.

I could stop demanding an explanation.

I could stop trying to convince Mitch.

I could stop discussing the footage.

That would end my part in the argument.

Taking the car off the flatbed was something else entirely.

That would change the outcome.

It would allow Mitch to continue using a vehicle I had decided to reclaim.

I wasn't going to confuse the two.

For a moment, I thought about how strange the whole thing had become.

I had refused to give someone fifteen thousand dollars.

That person was my brother.

My SUV had been scratched afterward.

I had a recording showing him with a key against the paint.

And now I was being told to reverse the recovery of another vehicle I owned.

I hadn't imagined family life would require that kind of calculation.

But there it was.

I was standing in the middle of it.

And every part of me that disliked conflict wanted somebody else to make it stop.

That was the hardest thing to admit.

I wanted relief.

I wanted the argument over.

I wanted to stop seeing Mitch look at me as though I were the one who had done something wrong.

But I couldn't keep paying for relief by surrendering my own decisions.

The cost was becoming too high.

Not just financially.

Emotionally.

Every time I questioned myself after Mitch crossed a line, I lost a little confidence in my own judgment.

Every time I treated his anger as more important than my reasons, I made it harder to say no the next time.

I had to stop doing that somewhere.

This was where I stopped.

Dad could disagree.

Mitch could argue.

I could feel uncomfortable.

None of those things changed the fact that the car belonged to me.

I had asked the driver whether it was secure.

He had said yes.

I had thanked him.

And I hadn't told him to unload it.

That was the decision I stood behind.
