9 – I Finally Understood That My Brother Could Deny the Damage All He Wanted, but He Could Not Decide What Happened to My Car

I had already made the decision.

That was the part I kept reminding myself of.

The car was secured on the flatbed.

The driver had confirmed it.

And I had thanked him.

There was nothing else I needed to ask.

Nothing else I needed to explain.

But I still felt the pull to turn around and defend myself one more time.

That was a habit I had developed around Mitch.

Whenever he challenged me, I wanted to make him understand.

Whenever he rejected an explanation, I tried to find a better one.

I had done it so often that stopping felt almost wrong.

I kept expecting another argument.

Another objection.

Another reason I was supposed to change my mind.

But the decision itself was simple.

I owned the car.

Mitch had been driving it for two years.

And I no longer wanted him to have it.

That was enough.

I didn't need to turn a straightforward decision into a debate.

Still, I couldn't stop thinking about what had brought us there.

Fifteen thousand dollars.

That was the amount Mitch had wanted.

I had refused to give it to him.

I knew that refusal had upset him.

But I hadn't done anything wrong by saying no.

I had to keep reminding myself of that.

It sounds ridiculous now.

A person shouldn't need to rehearse the idea that their own money belongs to them.

Yet I had spent so long worrying about Mitch's reactions that I sometimes treated his disappointment as proof of my wrongdoing.

It wasn't.

He could be angry.

He could disagree.

He could think I should have helped him.

None of that gave him the right to damage my SUV.

I looked back at the vehicle in my mind.

Forty thousand dollars.

That was what it was worth.

I had worked to have something that belonged to me.

And Mitch had responded to my refusal by putting a key against its paint.

The recording showed him there.

Ninety seconds.

That detail still troubled me.

I thought about how long a minute and a half really was.

Long enough to stop.

Long enough to reconsider.

Long enough to understand that a key wasn't supposed to be dragged against somebody else's vehicle.

I didn't know what had been going through Mitch's mind.

I wasn't going to pretend I did.

But I knew what the recording showed.

And I knew what the scratches meant to me.

They weren't just marks on a car.

They were damage I hadn't agreed to accept.

Damage that followed a disagreement over money.

Damage my brother wouldn't acknowledge when I confronted him.

I had wanted him to take responsibility.

That was the part that hurt.

I didn't expect perfection from Mitch.

I knew him too well for that.

I wasn't asking him to go back and become the brother I wished he had been.

I wanted him to answer a direct question.

That was all.

Instead, he had argued that the footage established nothing.

He had tried to narrow the entire situation down to the camera's position.

I could still hear the certainty in his voice.

He had sounded so confident.

As if confidence could make an explanation unnecessary.

When I asked him what he had actually been doing, that confidence disappeared for a moment.

He didn't answer.

I hadn't forgotten that.

I didn't think I ever would.

Not because the silence proved everything.

It didn't.

But because it showed me how quickly his argument fell apart when he had to provide an explanation instead of criticizing mine.

Dad had stepped between us before the conversation went any further.

He had told us the argument was finished.

Then he had directed me to unload the car.

I understood that he wanted something to change.

I understood that the car on the flatbed made the confrontation impossible to ignore.

But I couldn't agree with his solution.

Taking the car down wouldn't repair my SUV.

It wouldn't make Mitch admit anything.

It wouldn't change the fact that I had refused him money and he had responded by damaging my property.

All it would do was return the car to the same arrangement I had decided to end.

I wasn't willing to do that.

I thought about the difference between peace and surrender.

For a long time, I had confused them.

If I gave in, the argument might stop.

If I agreed, people might calm down.

If I stopped insisting on what was fair, the immediate discomfort might disappear.

But the underlying problem would remain.

That had become clear to me.

I could stop arguing without changing my decision.

I could refuse to discuss the recording again without pretending it didn't exist.

I could hear Dad's objection without treating it as an order I had to obey.

Those were choices I hadn't always allowed myself.

The flatbed made them real.

It wasn't just something I had threatened to do.

The car was already secured.

The driver had confirmed it.

And I had no reason to tell him to reverse the process.

I felt uneasy.

I won't pretend otherwise.

It was my brother's car in the way people sometimes speak about something they use every day.

But it wasn't his car in the way that mattered.

I owned it.

I had allowed him to drive it.

And I was ending that permission.

I had to separate familiarity from ownership.

Two years of use didn't change the facts.

Neither did Mitch's anger.

Neither did Dad's instruction.

I looked at what I could control.

My own money.

My own vehicle.

My own decision to continue helping someone.

I couldn't control whether Mitch accepted responsibility.

I couldn't control whether Dad agreed with me.

And I couldn't make the scratches disappear by finding the right words.

But I could decide that Mitch would no longer drive my car.

That was the one thing I didn't need anybody else's permission to do.

I held on to it.

Because I knew what would happen if I started bargaining with myself again.

I would look for a way to make Mitch less angry.

I would wonder whether I had gone too far.

I would try to make the situation easier for everyone else.

And somewhere in that process, my own decision would become negotiable.

I didn't want that anymore.

I didn't need Mitch to understand before I acted.

I didn't need him to confess.

I didn't need him to admit the scratches were his responsibility.

The car was mine.

The decision was mine.

And I intended to leave it that way.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: Dad Had Tried to End the Argument With One Order, but I Could Not Ignore
