5 – Dad Wanted the Car Unloaded, but I Had Already Made the One Decision My Brother Could Not Argue Away

I didn't ask the driver to change anything.

The car stayed secured.

That was important to me.

Dad had made his position clear.

He wanted the vehicle taken off the flatbed.

I had heard him.

I understood exactly what he was asking.

But I wasn't going to do it.

For two years, Mitch had been driving a car that belonged to me.

I had allowed that arrangement to continue.

And somewhere along the way, I had started treating my own permission as something I couldn't take back.

That was the part I felt ashamed of.

Not helping him.

Helping family wasn't something I regretted by itself.

What bothered me was how difficult it had become to say that the help was finished.

I looked at the car.

It was secured for a reason.

I had already made my decision before this argument reached the point where Dad stepped between us.

I hadn't changed my mind.

And the driver had confirmed that everything was ready.

There wasn't anything else I needed from him.

I had thanked him.

Now I needed to stop talking.

That sounds easy.

It wasn't.

I was used to explaining myself when Mitch disagreed with me.

If he questioned one detail, I explained it.

If he challenged another, I tried again.

By the end, I would be answering questions that had nothing to do with the original problem.

I could feel the beginning of that pattern again.

The scratched SUV.

The key.

The recording.

The car on the flatbed.

Dad's instruction.

There were enough subjects for Mitch to keep us arguing for hours.

I didn't want to give him that opportunity.

The only issue I had actually needed to settle was whether I was still willing to let him use my car.

I wasn't.

That hadn't changed.

I thought about the difference between the two vehicles.

My SUV was worth forty thousand dollars.

Its paint had been damaged.

The other car had been in Mitch's possession for two years.

Now it was being taken back.

Those facts were connected by what Mitch had done.

But they weren't interchangeable.

Taking back my car didn't magically repair the SUV.

It didn't erase the scratches.

And it certainly didn't make Mitch admit anything.

I understood that.

I wasn't pretending otherwise.

What I could do was stop allowing him to continue using something that belonged to me.

That was within my control.

His willingness to tell the truth wasn't.

I had spent too much time confusing those two things.

I could ask him to explain what happened.

I couldn't make him answer.

I could show him the recording.

I couldn't force him to acknowledge what it showed.

I could tell him that his behavior was unacceptable.

I couldn't make him care.

But the car was different.

That was mine to decide.

I looked back at Mitch.

The same brother who had demanded fifteen thousand dollars was now facing the loss of a car he had been using for two years.

I couldn't know what he was thinking.

I knew what he had already said.

He had denied that the video established anything.

He had challenged the camera's view.

And when I asked him for his own explanation, he had nothing to offer.

That silence still bothered me.

It shouldn't have been necessary to argue about a key touching the paint on my SUV for ninety seconds.

Yet there we were.

The recording hadn't been enough for him.

The damage hadn't been enough.

My asking him directly hadn't been enough.

I began to wonder what I had been waiting for.

Some perfect sentence?

Some answer that would finally make him understand?

I didn't have one.

I was beginning to accept that I never would.

Dad's instruction still stood between us.

Take the car down.

He had said it as though the matter could be settled that way.

Maybe he believed removing the car from the flatbed would calm things down.

Maybe he just wanted the argument to stop.

I couldn't speak for him.

I only knew that unloading the car would undo the one decision I had made.

And I wasn't willing to do that.

I kept coming back to those two years.

Two years of Mitch driving something I owned.

I hadn't asked him to spend those years preparing a defense for why he should keep it forever.

I hadn't told him the arrangement could never end.

But the longer I had let it continue, the harder it had become to draw the line.

I hadn't understood that until now.

I had been treating a temporary permission as though it had become an obligation.

It hadn't.

Mitch could be unhappy about losing the car.

Dad could disagree with the timing.

Neither reaction changed ownership.

Neither one changed what had happened to my SUV.

I didn't need to turn their disagreement into another reason to surrender.

That was a hard lesson to learn while standing in front of my own family.

I felt angry.

I felt disappointed.

Most of all, I felt tired of having to defend a decision that should have belonged to me from the beginning.

The driver had answered my question.

The car was secured.

I wasn't going to ask him to take it down.

For once, the next step didn't require Mitch to agree with me.

I let my decision stand.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: I Kept Thinking About Those Ninety Seconds on Camera and Why My Brother Would
