One of the names in the ledger belonged to the Harris family.

Their farm had been sold decades earlier after the family fell behind on a loan.

According to the original deed, they had voluntarily transferred the property.

But a separate accounting schedule suggested that the loan balance might have been inflated by fees the family had never agreed to pay.

The investigator located the farmer's granddaughter, Grace Harris.

She agreed to meet us.

Grace brought a box of family letters and a photograph of her grandparents standing in front of their farmhouse.

"My grandmother always said they were tricked," she told us. "Nobody believed her because the documents said they had signed."

The letters described meetings with representatives of the Ashford company.

One letter mentioned that the family had been promised a chance to buy the land back after a development project was completed.

That promise had never been fulfilled.

Grace didn't know whether the letters would be enough to reopen the dispute.

But she wanted the truth established.

I looked at her photograph.

She had grown up hearing the same kind of story my mother had lived with: a family losing something important while powerful people insisted everything had been done properly.

For the first time, I understood that our case wasn't only about keeping our house.

If the records were genuine and the transactions were unlawful, other families might have legitimate claims of their own.

Daniel explained that each case would need to be reviewed individually.

We couldn't promise anyone a victory.

But we could help them find the records and seek independent legal advice.

Grace took my hand before she left.

"Your father may have given us something we never had before," she said.

"What's that?"

"A chance to prove we weren't imagining what happened."
