The records facility found the box.

It was smaller than I expected, made of brown cardboard and sealed with aging tape.

The label contained my father's initials and the date of the storage agreement.

A representative documented its condition before opening it.

Inside were notebooks, photocopies of property deeds, several photographs, and a cassette tape.

There was also a second letter addressed to my mother.

Daniel arranged for the contents to be reviewed and preserved properly.

The letter was dated three days before my father disappeared.

My mother read it aloud.

Evelyn, I have been wrong to keep so much from you. I believed silence would protect you, but I see now that it has only left you carrying questions you never deserved.*

She stopped reading and wiped her eyes.

The letter continued.

If I cannot return, tell the children that I did not leave because I stopped loving them. I left because I believed the evidence would be safer if I separated myself from it.*

My mother began to cry.

I took her hand.

The letter did not prove what happened to Thomas after that night.

It did not establish that he had been forced to disappear or that anyone had harmed him.

But it confirmed that he had been trying to preserve evidence and that he had understood the danger of leaving it in one place.

The cassette tape contained a recording of a conversation between Thomas and another man.

Daniel arranged for a specialist to make a secure digital copy.

The audio was faint.

But one voice was unmistakably my grandfather's.

Richard Ashford.

He was discussing property transfers and warning Thomas not to involve outsiders.

Then Richard said something that made the room go silent.

"If these families discover what we signed, the entire arrangement will collapse."

Thomas replied, "Then perhaps it should."
