After weeks of legal requests and negotiations, we finally received permission for a supervised inspection of the old greenhouse foundation.

A property representative accompanied us, along with Daniel and an independent surveyor.

The greenhouse was little more than cracked concrete, rusted metal frames, and weeds.

The surveyor compared the old map with the remaining foundation.

He identified a small section that did not match the modern measurements.

Under professional supervision, the team examined the area.

Beneath a loose foundation panel, they discovered a sealed metal container.

My heart hammered as the representative opened it.

Inside were several water-damaged documents, a small ledger, and a sealed envelope bearing my father's name.

Daniel photographed everything before handling the papers.

The ledger contained property references, dates, and company names.

Some matched the disputed transfers.

Others did not appear in the records we had already reviewed.

The envelope contained a short letter.

It was addressed to my mother.

She read it with trembling hands.

Evelyn, if you are reading this, I have failed to explain what I should have told you from the beginning. The house was never meant to be a gift from the Ashfords. It was meant to remain a home for the people whose lives were damaged by their dealings.*

My mother pressed the letter to her chest.

I read the next lines.

The records will explain why. Do not trust anyone who asks you to surrender them before an independent review.*

The letter was signed by Thomas.

It did not explain where he had gone.

It did not tell us whether he was alive or dead when he wrote it.

But it made one thing clear.

Our house was connected to a much larger story than a dispute between two families.

And the ledger might finally reveal what the Ashfords had spent years trying to conceal.
