My father disappeared when I was eight.

My mother told us he had gone away because he needed time to think.

Then she said he had died.

Over the years, the explanation changed so often that I stopped asking.

Now I learned that he had discovered evidence of wrongdoing inside one of the wealthiest families in the state.

I wanted to know everything.

My mother finally admitted that Thomas had been investigating old property transfers shortly before he disappeared.

Several families had lost their homes after signing documents they did not understand.

Some had received almost nothing in return.

Others had been told their land was needed for public projects, only to discover that luxury developments appeared there years later.

Thomas believed his father had arranged the transactions through a network of companies.

He began collecting records.

When he confronted Richard, the family split apart.

Thomas wanted the evidence made public.

Victoria wanted him to stop before he destroyed the family name.

"Did my father die because of it?" I asked.

My mother pressed her hands together.

"I don't know."

The answer frightened me more than a confession would have.

She explained that Thomas had left one evening with a briefcase and never returned.

The police questioned several people, but no one could establish where he had gone.

Eventually, his disappearance became a cold case.

My mother received no explanation.

She received no inheritance.

And because Thomas had been the person managing the family documents, she had no way to prove the promises he had made about our home.

I looked at the photograph again.

Victoria had known my mother for decades.

She had known about Thomas.

And now she had returned to take our house.

I asked my mother why she had never contacted the police again.

She stared at the floor.

"Because the last time I tried, someone left a message on our answering machine."

"What did it say?"

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"It said that if I wanted my children to grow up safely, I would stop asking questions."
