Daniel began calling every Sunday.

At first, Logan answered with short replies.

Over time, the conversations became longer.

Daniel visited when he said he would, attended Logan's college orientation, and helped him move a used desk into his bedroom.

He also began repaying the money he had borrowed.

He didn't ask Logan to forgive him.

He didn't expect his son to forget the past.

One afternoon, Daniel and I sat on the porch while the boys played in the yard.

"I know I hurt him," Daniel said.

"Yes, you did."

He looked down at his hands.

"I thought providing money was the most important thing a father could do."

I shook my head.

"Being present matters, too."

He nodded.

"I know that now."

I didn't tell him everything was forgiven.

Some wounds required more than a few good months to heal.

But I acknowledged that he was trying.

And I allowed the possibility that he might continue.

Later, Logan told me that he had agreed to have lunch with his father once a month.

He wasn't doing it for me.

He was doing it because he wanted to see whether their relationship could become something better.

I was proud of him for making that decision on his own.

For the first time, his relationship with his father was no longer something he felt obligated to repair.

It was something he could choose.
