Several months after the scholarship announcement, Officer Reynolds stopped by our house.

I was surprised to see him on the porch.

"Is something wrong?"

He smiled.

"No, ma'am. I was in the neighborhood and wanted to check on your family."

I invited him inside.

Logan was helping Andrew with a puzzle at the living room table.

When he saw the officer, he stood up.

"Everything okay?"

"Everything is fine," Reynolds replied. "I wanted to tell your mother something I didn't explain clearly that morning."

I felt a familiar knot in my stomach.

"What is it?"

The officer explained that after the emergency call, Logan had insisted on returning to Mrs. Whitmore's home once he was sure Andrew was safe.

He had worried that the ambulance crew might need information about her medication or emergency contacts.

He had also given the paramedics a clear account of what he had seen.

"Your son was exhausted," Reynolds said. "He was frightened, and he was trying to do too much. But he stayed focused when it mattered."

I looked at Logan.

He stared at the floor.

The officer continued.

"That morning, I saw a young man who believed he had to be responsible for everything. I wanted you to understand that his actions were brave, but I also hoped you'd see how much pressure he was under."

I nodded slowly.

"I understand now."

Reynolds looked at Logan.

"Remember something. You can help people without becoming responsible for every problem they have."

Logan smiled faintly.

"I'm working on that."

After the officer left, I sat beside my son.

"I wish I'd understood sooner."

He leaned his shoulder against mine.

"So do I."

It wasn't a dramatic reconciliation.

It was something quieter.

Two people admitting that they had missed each other while living in the same house.
