The scholarship committee invited Logan to an interview.

He wore a borrowed suit jacket that was slightly too large in the shoulders.

I helped him straighten his collar before we left.

"You look handsome."

"Mom, please don't cry."

"I'm not crying."

"You are."

I laughed and wiped my eyes.

At the interview, Logan was asked about his academic struggles.

He could have blamed his circumstances.

Instead, he explained that he had tried to manage too many responsibilities without asking for help.

He admitted that his grades had suffered and that he had learned to seek support before a problem became overwhelming.

One committee member asked what had changed.

Logan paused.

"My family started talking honestly."

I felt my throat tighten.

He explained that he still had responsibilities at home, but he was learning the difference between helping his family and trying to carry everyone.

He also mentioned the morning he helped Mrs. Whitmore.

He didn't exaggerate what happened.

He simply described hearing her call for help and doing what he could until the paramedics arrived.

When the interview ended, he walked toward me with a nervous expression.

"How do you think I did?"

"I think you told them the truth."

"Is that enough?"

"Sometimes it's the best thing you can offer."

We drove home without knowing the outcome.

For once, I didn't spend the afternoon checking my phone every five minutes.

We went grocery shopping.

We helped Andrew build a tower out of cardboard boxes.

We cooked dinner together.

Life continued while we waited.

And that felt like progress, too.
