Three days later, Helen Whitmore called our house.<\/p>\n
She had been discharged from the hospital and wanted to thank Logan personally.<\/p>\n
I drove both boys to her home that afternoon.<\/p>\n
She opened the door with a walking stick in one hand and a smile on her face.<\/p>\n
"There he is," she said. "My young hero."<\/p>\n
Logan blushed.<\/p>\n
"Please don't call me that."<\/p>\n
"Why not?"<\/p>\n
"Because I just called an ambulance."<\/p>\n
Helen laughed softly.<\/p>\n
"Sometimes doing the right thing is exactly what makes someone a hero."<\/p>\n
She invited us inside.<\/p>\n
Over tea and cookies, she told me what had happened that morning.<\/p>\n
She had fallen while trying to reach her telephone. Her front door had been unlocked because she had been expecting a grocery delivery.<\/p>\n
Logan heard her cries and came inside.<\/p>\n
He remained calm enough to call emergency services and explain the situation clearly.<\/p>\n
When the dispatcher told him to stay with her, he did.<\/p>\n
When Andrew began crying outside, Logan made sure a trusted neighbor was watching him.<\/p>\n
Then he returned to Helen's side.<\/p>\n
"I was frightened," Helen admitted. "I thought I might die there on that kitchen floor."<\/p>\n
She reached for Logan's hand.<\/p>\n
"Then I heard your voice telling me help was coming."<\/p>\n
Logan looked uncomfortable.<\/p>\n
I saw him trying to minimize what he had done.<\/p>\n
He was so accustomed to believing his efforts were never enough that he couldn't accept gratitude without embarrassment.<\/p>\n
Helen seemed to understand.<\/p>\n
She didn't praise him endlessly or make him perform modesty.<\/p>\n
She simply thanked him.<\/p>\n
Before we left, she asked whether Logan would help her organize a few things around the house once she had recovered.<\/p>\n
He agreed, but I told her we would arrange it around his schoolwork.<\/p>\n
On the drive home, Logan was unusually quiet.<\/p>\n
Finally, he said, "She really thought she was going to die."<\/p>\n
"Yes," I replied.<\/p>\n
"And she was alone."<\/p>\n
I glanced at him in the mirror.<\/p>\n
"That must have been frightening."<\/p>\n
He nodded.<\/p>\n
Then he said something I didn't expect.<\/p>\n
"I think I was scared because I knew what it felt like to be afraid and not want to bother anybody."<\/p>\n
I gripped the steering wheel.<\/p>\n
I wanted to ask what he meant.<\/p>\n
But I knew better than to turn every vulnerable moment into an interrogation.<\/p>\n
So I simply said, "You never have to earn the right to ask for help."<\/p>\n
He watched the passing houses.<\/p>\n
"I hope I can remember that."<\/p>\n
