The doctor discharged Logan that afternoon.

I brought both boys home, ordered takeout, and insisted that everyone rest.

Andrew fell asleep on the couch before dinner.

Logan went straight to his bedroom.

I stood outside his door for several minutes, listening to the silence.

Then I noticed an envelope sticking out from beneath his mattress.

I wasn't proud of what I did next.

I picked it up.

Inside were grocery receipts, a handwritten list of expenses, and several folded bills.

There was also a small notebook filled with numbers.

Electricity.

Water.

Rent.

Groceries.

Medicine.

Every expense had been carefully recorded.

Beside several bills, Logan had written the word "covered."

I sat on the edge of his bed.

My son had been keeping track of our household finances.

He had written down how much money I earned, how much I spent, and how much remained after every paycheck.

At the back of the notebook was a list of possible part-time jobs.

Below it, he had written:

If I can make another $300 a month, Mom won't have to work Sundays.*

My eyes filled with tears.

I had never asked him to do this.

I had never told him that he needed to rescue me.

But somewhere along the way, he had decided that my exhaustion was his responsibility.

I heard footsteps behind me.

"Mom?"

I turned.

Logan stood in the doorway.

His face went white when he saw the notebook.

"You went through my things?"

"I found the envelope."

"That doesn't make it yours."

He took it from my hands.

For a moment, I thought he might shout.

Instead, he looked so disappointed that I wished he had.

"I'm sorry," I said.

He shook his head.

"You always say that after you do something."

Then he closed the door.

I remained in the hallway, staring at the wood grain.

I had spent years teaching my son to be honest.

Yet when he finally revealed something important, I had discovered it by invading his privacy.

That night, I promised myself I would ask before assuming.

I just didn't know whether Logan would give me another chance to prove it.
