Logan was sitting upright when I entered the emergency department.<\/p>\n
A nurse had placed a blanket around his shoulders, and a blood pressure cuff was wrapped around his arm.<\/p>\n
He looked pale and exhausted.<\/p>\n
When he saw me, he immediately looked away.<\/p>\n
"Mom."<\/p>\n
I crossed the room and hugged him.<\/p>\n
He didn't hug me back at first.<\/p>\n
That hurt.<\/p>\n
Then I felt his arms slowly wrap around me.<\/p>\n
"I'm sorry," he whispered.<\/p>\n
I pulled away enough to see his face.<\/p>\n
"For what?"<\/p>\n
"For everything."<\/p>\n
I looked at the nurse.<\/p>\n
She explained that Logan was dehydrated and had not eaten properly. His blood tests were reassuring, but the doctor wanted him to rest and follow up with his regular physician.<\/p>\n
I turned back to my son.<\/p>\n
"Why haven't you been eating?"<\/p>\n
"I'm eating."<\/p>\n
"Logan, the nurse just told me you haven't been eating enough."<\/p>\n
He stared at his hands.<\/p>\n
"I forget sometimes."<\/p>\n
"How do you forget to eat?"<\/p>\n
He gave a small, bitter laugh.<\/p>\n
"You'd be surprised."<\/p>\n
I wanted to demand an explanation, but his exhausted expression stopped me.<\/p>\n
For months, our conversations had become arguments.<\/p>\n

"Nothing."<\/p>\n

"Do what?"<\/p>\n
"Pretend you're fine when you're clearly not."<\/p>\n
His jaw tightened.<\/p>\n
"You do the same thing every day."<\/p>\n
The words struck me.<\/p>\n
"What?"<\/p>\n
"You come home exhausted. You say you're fine. You tell me not to worry about money, then you sit at the kitchen table looking at bills when you think I'm asleep."<\/p>\n
I opened my mouth.<\/p>\n
Nothing came out.<\/p>\n
Logan looked toward the window.<\/p>\n
"I know you're trying, Mom. I really do."<\/p>\n
His voice cracked.<\/p>\n
"But I can't keep pretending I don't see what's happening."<\/p>\n
For the first time, I realized that my son had been watching me just as closely as I had been watching him.<\/p>\n
And he had reached his own conclusions.<\/p>\n
