She had been alone when she suffered a medical emergency early that morning.

Logan heard her calling for help.

He rushed inside, called emergency services, and followed the dispatcher's instructions until the paramedics arrived.

"He stayed with her the entire time," the officer said. "He was frightened, but he never abandoned her."

I pressed Andrew against my chest.

"Why did Logan go to the hospital?"

"After the paramedics took Mrs. Whitmore away, Logan became dizzy and collapsed."

My knees weakened.

"He collapsed?"

"Apparently, he hadn't eaten much. The emergency medical team wanted him checked out."

I looked at my son's empty bedroom doorway.

He had been complaining about headaches lately.

Whenever I asked whether he was sleeping enough, he said he was fine.

I had believed him because I wanted to believe him.

"What about Andrew?" I asked.

"Logan brought him to your neighbor, Mrs. Lewis, before returning to help Mrs. Whitmore. I sometimes slept through daytime calls. My voicemail was frequently full because I received messages from the hospital, the school, and bill collectors.

But none of that explained why my son had never mentioned the problem.

"Did he tell you why he was missing school?" I asked.

The officer shook his head.

"No. But he did ask me not to frighten you."

I stared at the paper.

My son had apparently been more worried about my reaction than his own circumstances.

That frightened me more than the police cruiser outside.

I handed Andrew a toy from the coffee table and called the hospital.

When a nurse confirmed Logan was awake, I grabbed my purse.

Before I left, Officer Reynolds stopped me.

"Mrs. Carter, don't assume your son has been making bad decisions just because things have changed."

I turned toward him.

"Then what should I assume?"

He answered quietly.

"That you may not know the whole story yet."

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: My Son Looked Like a Stranger in the Hospital Bed

Officer Reynolds asked me to sit down.
