I requested a copy of the record because my name is in it, and I want to understand why."

He looked down at his cart.

"People can misunderstand old paperwork."

"That's possible."

"Names get recorded for different reasons."

"That may be true."

He seemed surprised that I was not arguing.

I was not there to prove him wrong.

I wanted the document, not a fight.

He moved the milk carton from one side of the cart to the other.

"Did my mother's friend put this idea in your head?"

"No."

"She took you to the courthouse, didn't she?"

"Yes."

He gave a short, unhappy laugh.

"She should have stayed out of it."

I felt my shoulders tense.

"She took me to see a record. That's all."

"You worked for my mother for a long time, and she was good to you. Nobody denies that."

I waited.

"But that doesn't mean you should get involved in the family estate."

I had heard almost the same words before.

The first time, I had been so startled that I had barely answered.

This time, I made myself speak slowly.

"I'm not trying to get involved in your family. My name is in a public record connected to the property. I think I have a right to ask what that means."

He stared at me.

I did not raise my voice.

I did not point a finger.

I simply held his gaze and let the words stand.

After a moment, he looked away.

"Did you tell anyone else?"

"Only the clerk who helped me request the document and your mother's friend."

He nodded as if he were counting the names.

"I don't want rumors spreading."

"Neither do I."

"Then leave it alone until we can figure out what's going on."

I felt a familiar urge to agree just to make the conversation end.

For years, I had found it easier to smooth over discomfort than to risk making someone angry.

But leaving it alone was not the same as waiting for the document.

It would mean giving up the only clear step I had taken.

"I will wait for the copy," I said. "I won't make claims or spread rumors. But I won't cancel the request."

His jaw tightened.

"You could make this difficult for everybody."

"I don't want to make anything difficult."

"Then why keep pushing?"

"Because my name is there."

We stood in silence.

A woman came around the corner carrying a basket of groceries.

She gave us a quick glance and continued toward the checkout.

Rosella's son moved his cart aside to let her pass.

When she was gone, he spoke again.

"My mother never told me anything about you owning part of that property."

I felt a chill move through me.

"I never said I owned any part of it."

"That's what you're suggesting."

"No. I'm saying the record has my name in it. I don't know what it means. That's why I requested the document."

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he shook his head.

"I have to go."

"So do I."

I moved my cart past him.

I expected him to call after me, but he did not.

At the checkout, I placed my groceries on the belt and tried to keep my hands steady.

The cashier asked whether I wanted paper or plastic.

I answered automatically.

I paid for my things, put them in the bags, and carried them to the car.

Only when I closed the door did I let myself breathe properly.

I was upset.

Not because he had asked questions.

He had every reason to want to understand what was happening with his mother's property.

I was upset because he had spoken as if my request itself were an offense.

For twenty-six years, I had entered his mother's home to work.

I had never asked to be treated as family.

I had never assumed that cleaning the house gave me a right to anything in it.

I had simply done the work I was paid to do.

Now my name had appeared in a record I did not understand, and I felt as if I had to defend my character before I could even ask what the record said.

I drove home slowly.

Once there, I carried the groceries inside and put them away.

I made tea, though I did not drink much of it.

Then I called Rosella's friend and told her what had happened.

"He thinks I am trying to take something from him," I said.

"Did he say that?"

"Not in those exact words."

"Then don't decide what he thinks. He may be frightened too."

I leaned back in my chair.

"I don't want to hurt him."

"I know."

"I don't want to cause trouble for his family."

"I know that too."

She paused.

"But his worry doesn't mean you have to pretend your name isn't in the book."

I looked toward the window.

The light was fading over the neighboring roofs.

"I told him I would wait for the document."

"That's reasonable."

"He wanted me to leave it alone."

"And you don't have to do that."

I rubbed the edge of the table with my thumb.

"Do you think Rosella knew this would happen?"

"I don't know, Elnora."

Her answer was quiet and firm.

I had begun to recognize that phrase as something worth trusting.

Neither of us could see the future Rosella had imagined.

Neither of us could know what her sons had been told or what she had kept to herself.

We could only follow the facts we had.

After the call, I opened my notebook and recorded the conversation at the grocery store.

I wrote down what Rosella's son had asked and what I had answered.

I did not add a judgment about his character.

I wrote only what had happened.

When I finished, I noticed that my hands were no longer shaking.

The conversation had not solved anything.

But I had answered him honestly, and I had not promised to abandon a question that concerned me.

That mattered.

I had spent too much of my life believing that peace depended on making myself smaller.

Sometimes peace came from being clear.

That night, I set the notebook beside the telephone.

I wanted it close in case the courthouse called.

Then I turned off the kitchen light and went to bed.

I thought about Rosella's son, about his fear of rumors, and about the words he had used when he said his mother never told him anything about me owning the land.

He had not said there was no record.

He had said he had never heard of one.

Those were different things.

I did not know whether the distinction mattered.

For now, I wrote it down in my mind and left it there.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: The Courthouse Called While I Was Folding Laundry, and the First Copy They Offered Me Was Only the Beginning of the Answer

I saw Rosella's older son at the grocery store on Friday.
