We can start with the name."

She told us which shelves held the older deed books.

The books were heavier than they looked.

Their dark covers had softened at the corners, and several had paper labels that had been replaced more than once.

I followed the clerk's directions until I found the volume I remembered.

My hands felt cold when I lifted it from the shelf.

Rosella's friend stood beside me while I carried it to the long table near the window.

I opened the book carefully.

The pages made a dry whisper as they turned.

I found the section I had seen before and stopped.

There was my name.

Elnora Ruthanne Whitsett.

I read it slowly.

Then I read it again.

The letters were clear enough that I could not blame the handwriting.

The name sat beside the legal description of the farmhouse, the pecan grove, the gravel drive, and the fields that stretched toward the creek.

I ran my finger along the edge of the page without touching the writing.

"That's it," I said.

Rosella's friend leaned closer.

"Yes."

"I didn't imagine it."

"No, you didn't."

I felt relieved for about three seconds.

Then the questions came back.

The clerk returned when she noticed us studying the page.

"Can I help you find something?"

"I need to understand what this entry means," I said.

She looked at the book, then at me.

"Are you asking about the ownership record?"

"I'm asking why my name appears beside this property."

She studied the page.

"This is an older record," she said. "I can help you identify the document and explain how to request a copy. I can't tell you what a particular legal arrangement means without reviewing the underlying instrument."

"Can you tell me when this entry was made?"

She pointed to a date in the margin.

I wrote it down.

The date was older than I had expected.

It was not from the last few months of Rosella's life.

It was not even from the last few years.

I stared at the numbers until they stopped looking like a date and started looking like another locked door.

"Can I see the document that goes with this entry?" I asked.

The clerk checked the volume and its index.

"There should be a related instrument," she said. "I'll need to locate the reference number."

She took down the number and walked to another desk.

While she searched, I kept my eyes on my name.

I remembered Rosella standing at her kitchen counter, folding a dish towel into a neat square.

She had asked me whether I ever thought about buying a small house of my own.

At the time, I had laughed and told her that houses cost more than the money I earned cleaning them.

She had not laughed with me.

Instead, she had looked at me for a long moment.

"You never know what a person might have waiting for them," she had said.

I had thought she was speaking about life in general.

Now I wondered whether she had been trying to tell me something.

But wondering was not proof.

I closed my eyes briefly and returned my attention to the book.

The clerk came back with a thin folder.

"I found a cross-reference," she said. "The related document is stored separately. We can request a copy, but I need you to fill out this form."

I took the form and read every line.

It asked for my contact information, the record reference, and the reason for the request.

I wrote that I was named in the associated property record and needed a copy to understand the entry.

The clerk reviewed the form before accepting it.

"Do you have identification with you?"

I showed her my driver's license.

She checked my name and returned it.

"Your request is in order," she said. "There may be a copying fee, and the document may take a little time to retrieve."

"How long?"

"It depends on where the original is stored. I'll give you the expected turnaround once the request is entered."

I thanked her.

The answer was not the one I had hoped to receive, but it was a real answer.

For the first time since seeing my name, I had a specific step to take.

Rosella's friend and I left the records room and sat on a bench near the hallway.

I opened my notebook and wrote down the date, the reference number, and the clerk's instructions.

My handwriting looked steadier than it had the night before.

"Well," Rosella's friend said, "at least we know where to start."

"We know the name is there."

"And we know the entry is older than either of us thought."

I looked at her.

"Did Rosella ever tell you she had put my name on anything?"

She took a moment before answering.

"No."

"Did she tell you why she might have done it?"

"No."

Her honesty disappointed me, but I was grateful for it.

I had no use for someone pretending to know what she did not know.

"She did say once that she had left something unfinished," her friend added. "I didn't understand what she meant."

"When was that?"

"A few months before she died."

"Did she mention me?"

"Not by name."

I wrote that down too.

The words did not prove anything, but they belonged in my notes.

We sat quietly for a while.

People walked past carrying folders, envelopes, and stacks of paper.

Their ordinary business made my own problem feel strangely private.

I had spent twenty-six years entering Rosella's house through the kitchen door.

I had cleaned her rooms, washed her dishes, polished her furniture, and watched the seasons change through the windows.

I knew where she kept the extra tablecloths and which cabinet door stuck in humid weather.

Yet I had apparently known almost nothing about one important part of her life.

"Do you think her sons know?" I asked.

Rosella's friend folded her hands in her lap.

"I don't know."

I looked down at my notebook.

I had wanted to ask that question since the day one of her sons warned me not to involve myself in family matters.

His words had stayed with me because I had not been trying to involve myself in anything.

I had simply gone where Rosella's friend took me and looked at a public record.

Still, I could understand why her sons might be upset if they believed I was making a claim against their inheritance.

I did not want to take anything that did not belong to me.

I also did not want to walk away from a question that carried my own name.

"I need to know what the paper says before I speak to either of them," I said.

"That seems sensible."

We walked out together.

The rain had begun by the time we reached the steps.

Rosella's friend opened her umbrella, and we stood beneath it for a moment while I put my notebook away.

I thanked her for coming.

She squeezed my arm.

"You don't have to solve it all today."

"I know."

But I also knew I could not go back to the way things had been.

Not after seeing my name in that book.

On the drive home, I stopped at a small grocery store and bought bread, milk, and a dozen eggs.

I did not need much.

I needed something ordinary to do with my hands.

At home, I put the groceries away and made a sandwich.

Then I sat at the table and copied the reference number onto a fresh sheet of paper.

I placed that sheet inside the notebook.

I did not know what the document would reveal.

I did not know whether Rosella had left me a gift, an explanation, a responsibility, or something else entirely.

I only knew that the next step was to read the record itself.

For once, I decided I would wait for the paper before I let my imagination write the answer.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: Rosella Had Asked Me About a Home of My Own Years Earlier, but I Had Never Understood Why She Wanted to Know

I waited until Monday morning before going back to the courthouse.
