But I don't want to assume that this arrangement should continue forever without us talking about it."

Danny nodded.

"That's fair."

I continued.

"I also know Michael has offered me a room, and Stephanie has invited me to stay with her."

Michael pulled out a chair.

Stephanie took my hand.

"I don't want to choose a place because I feel guilty," I said. "And I don't want any of you to think that my decision is a test of whether I love you."

Michael nodded.

"I understand."

I looked at Danny.

"I also don't want you to keep sleeping on the couch simply because you're the one who offered first."

He opened his mouth.

Then he closed it.

Kayla came and sat beside him.

"We've been talking about that too," she said.

I looked at her.

She continued.

"We love having you here. But we know this apartment isn't very big, and we don't want you to feel that you have to stay because you don't want to hurt anyone's feelings."

Her words moved me.

"I don't feel that way," I told her. "But I do want us to think about what would work for everyone."

Michael leaned forward.

"Would you consider staying with us for a few weeks, just to see how it feels?"

I looked at him.

"Would that be all right with Jenna?"

"Yes," he said. "We've talked about it."

Stephanie nodded.

"And if you'd like to stay with me later, we can work that out too."

I was touched by the offers.

But I needed to think.

"I would like to spend time in both your homes," I said. "Not because I'm trying to decide which of you loves me more. Because I want to know how we can be part of one another's lives in a way that works."

Michael smiled faintly.

"I'd like that."

Stephanie squeezed my hand.

"Me too."

I looked at Danny.

He was quiet.

"What's on your mind, sweetheart?"

He took a breath.

"I don't want you to think that if you leave here, it means you didn't appreciate what we did."

I reached for his hand.

"I would never think that."

He looked at me.

"Sometimes I worry that you stay because you feel you owe us."

I felt tears gather in my eyes.

I had not realized he was carrying that worry.

"I stay because you made me feel safe when I was frightened," I said. "And because I love you. But I don't want gratitude to become an obligation that keeps either of us from making a good decision."

Danny nodded.

Kayla rested her hand on his shoulder.

I continued.

"You gave me a place when I needed one. Nothing can take that away. Whether I sleep here next month or somewhere else, what you did will always matter to me."

Danny's eyes grew wet.

He looked down at the table.

For a moment, none of us spoke.

Then Michael reached across the table and touched his brother's arm.

"You did something good for Mom," he said. "I don't want you to think we don't see that."

Danny gave a small nod.

Stephanie joined them.

"We see it now."

I looked at my three children.

I had wanted them to understand one another.

I had wanted them to recognize that success was not only about money or the size of a home.

But I had also wanted something more personal.

I wanted to be able to talk about my future without fearing that every choice would hurt someone.

For the first time, I felt we were getting there.

We spent the rest of the afternoon discussing practical things.

Michael explained how long I could stay with him.

Stephanie talked about her work schedule and the guest room.

Danny and Kayla explained what would make the next few weeks easier for everyone.

We didn't settle every detail.

We didn't need to.

We had begun asking the questions together.

Later, when the others were preparing to leave, I placed the empty cream envelope back on the shelf.

I no longer saw it as a symbol of what Danny had received.

I saw it as a reminder of what he had offered before anyone else understood what was needed.

And I saw the white envelopes differently too.

Whatever Walt had written to Michael and Stephanie, those letters had brought us to a conversation we should have had long ago.

They had not fixed us.

They had given us a reason to begin.

Click here to continue reading: PART 20: I Finally Understood What Walt Had Left Us, and When I Looked Around the Table, I Knew His Last Gift Had Never Been About Who Got What

By the end of the month, our family had found a different rhythm.
