We'll go for a walk and pick up something for dinner."

After they left, I sat by the window with my tea.

I had the apartment to myself.

No television.

No little feet running down the hallway.

No one asking where the blue cup had gone.

I could hear the hum of the refrigerator and the occasional car passing outside.

For the first time in a long while, I had space to think without feeling that I needed to fill the silence.

I thought about Michael taking the boys.

He had offered because he wanted to help, not because Danny had demanded anything.

That distinction mattered.

I hoped it would become a habit.

I also hoped Danny would learn to accept help without immediately trying to prove he could manage alone.

He had spent years being the child who needed the least.

I wondered whether we had all made that too easy for him.

When Walt was alive, Danny rarely asked for anything.

If his older brother needed help moving furniture, Danny showed up.

If Stephanie needed someone to drive her somewhere, Danny found the time.

When our car broke down, Danny came with tools and stayed until it ran again.

He never made a list of what he had done.

He simply did it.

I had always been proud of him.

But pride had made it easy to overlook how often he carried things without asking anyone to carry something for him.

I thought about the night I had arrived at his apartment with my bags.

He had looked at me and said I could have his bed.

He hadn't held a family meeting.

He hadn't asked whether anyone thought it was fair.

He had simply moved his pillow to the couch.

That was the kind of person he was.

But I didn't want his goodness to become an excuse for everyone else to do less.

I wanted his kindness to be returned.

Not as payment.

As love.

When Danny and Kayla came home, they were carrying groceries and laughing about something that had happened on their walk.

Kayla placed the bags on the counter.

"We found a little bakery we hadn't tried before."

She opened a paper bag and showed me a small loaf of bread.

"I thought you might like this."

I smiled.

"That looks wonderful."

Danny put the groceries away while Kayla made tea.

I watched them move around the small kitchen.

They knew where everything belonged.

They knew how to work around each other without bumping into one another.

Their apartment was crowded, but their lives had a rhythm.

I was learning how to fit into that rhythm without expecting it to revolve around me.

Later that evening, Michael returned with the boys.

The younger one was sleepy.

The older one was talking so quickly that he barely stopped to breathe.

Michael looked tired.

Danny laughed when he saw his face.

"How difficult was it?"

Michael lowered himself into a chair.

"Very difficult."

The boys protested.

"We were good!"

"You were wonderful," Michael said. "And I am exhausted."

We all laughed.

Then Michael looked at Danny.

"Seriously, though. How do you do this every day?"

Danny shrugged.

"You just do it."

Michael shook his head.

"No. I mean, I knew you were busy, but I don't think I understood how much you have to keep track of."

Danny glanced at Kayla.

She smiled at him.

"We manage."

Michael looked from one to the other.

"I should have offered to take them more often."

Danny started to answer.

Then he stopped himself.

I saw him make the decision not to dismiss the offer.

"That would help," he said.

Michael nodded.

"Then let's make it a regular thing."

Danny looked surprised.

"Regular?"

"Maybe every other Saturday, if it works for you."

Danny glanced at Kayla again.

She considered it.

"That could give us a little time together."

Michael pulled out his phone.

"Let's look at the calendar."

They began discussing dates.

It was not a grand family reconciliation.

It was two brothers working out a practical arrangement.

But as I watched them, I felt something loosen inside me.

Michael was no longer only talking about what he should have done.

He was making a place for Danny's needs in his own schedule.

That was a beginning.

After the boys went to bed, Michael stayed a few minutes longer.

He sat beside me at the table.

"Mom, I wanted to ask you something."

"Of course."

"Do you ever feel like you have to make yourself smaller so nobody gets upset?"

I looked at him.

It was an unexpected question.

"Yes," I said. "I think I have done that for a long time."

He nodded slowly.

"I think I do it too, in a different way."

I waited.

He looked down at his hands.

"I keep everything organized because I don't like feeling that I can't control what's happening. When Dad died, I thought if I kept my own life steady, I could somehow keep everything else from falling apart."

I listened.

"But I ended up making decisions before I really understood what anyone else needed."

He swallowed.

"I'm sorry, Mom."

I reached for his hand.

"I know."

He looked at me.

"Do you think you'll ever feel comfortable asking me for help?"

I took a breath.

"I want to."

He nodded.

"I understand."

"I'll have to practice."

He gave a small smile.

"Then I'll have to practice being someone you can ask."

I squeezed his hand.

"That sounds fair."

When Michael finally left, I felt tired in a different way.

Not from worry.

From the effort of being honest.

It was work to stop hiding my feelings.

It was work to let my children see that I had needs.

It was work to accept that they might disappoint me again.

But it was also work worth doing.

I returned to the bedroom and looked at the neatly folded blanket.

Danny had left it on the chair.

I touched the fabric and thought of Walt.

I wished he could have seen Michael sitting at the table with his brother's family, learning to offer help without waiting for someone to ask twice.

I wished he could have heard Stephanie admit that she had been wrong.

I wished he could have watched Danny accept the help he had so often given others.

I couldn't bring Walt back.

But perhaps we could still honor what he had wanted for us.

Not by making a perfect family.

By becoming a family that paid attention.

Click here to continue reading: PART 18: Stephanie Came to Visit With a Bag of Groceries and an Apology She Had Finally Learned Not to Hide Behind Excuses

The following Saturday, Michael arrived at Danny's apartment shortly after lunch.
