Kayla took the boys out for a little while."

Michael nodded.

He walked inside and placed the bag on the kitchen counter.

Danny came in from the other room.

The two brothers greeted each other.

There was a moment of awkwardness, but it passed.

Michael asked about the boys.

Danny answered.

Then Michael mentioned that he had arranged to take them for an afternoon the following weekend.

Danny looked surprised.

"You don't have to do that just because of what happened."

"I know."

Michael paused.

"But I'd like to."

Danny studied him for a moment.

Then he nodded.

"All right."

It was a small exchange.

No grand apology.

No declaration that everything had been repaired.

Just two brothers making an arrangement and agreeing to follow through.

I was glad to see it.

When it was time to leave, Danny walked me to the door.

"Call if you need anything, Mom."

I smiled.

"I will."

He gave me a hug.

Then he leaned closer and whispered, "Try to enjoy yourself."

I laughed.

"I'll do my best."

Michael drove quietly at first.

I watched the familiar streets pass outside the window.

His neighborhood looked much as I remembered it.

The houses were neat, the lawns trimmed, and the driveways full of cars.

When we arrived, Jenna opened the front door.

She greeted me warmly and took my coat.

I thanked her.

The house smelled of roasted vegetables and something baking in the oven.

Michael led me into the living room.

For a moment, I felt the old discomfort return.

I remembered the conversation in which he had explained that there wasn't room for me to stay.

I remembered how I had tried to make my disappointment sound reasonable.

I had told him I understood.

I had told him not to worry.

I had gone home and cried.

Now I was standing in the same house, welcomed for dinner.

I tried to let myself enjoy the moment without pretending the past had disappeared.

Jenna showed me the dining room.

The table was set with plates, glasses, and folded napkins.

Everything looked comfortable and familiar.

Michael pulled out a chair for me.

"Sit wherever you'd like."

I chose the seat near the window.

He smiled.

"That's a good spot."

I sat down.

For the first time, I noticed that he had placed a small vase of flowers in the center of the table.

They were simple flowers, nothing elaborate.

I wondered whether he had bought them for the occasion.

I didn't ask.

Sometimes it was enough to notice that someone had made an effort.

Dinner was pleasant.

Jenna asked about Danny's boys.

Michael told me about work.

I spoke about the things I had been reading and the small routines I had begun establishing at Danny's apartment.

Nobody rushed me.

Nobody looked at the clock while I was speaking.

I felt myself relax.

After dinner, Michael helped Jenna clear the table.

I offered to help, but she smiled and told me to sit with them.

This time, I didn't argue.

I sat in the living room while Michael brought over a cup of tea.

He placed it on the table beside me.

Then he sat across from me.

"Mom, can I show you something?"

I nodded.

He led me down the hallway and stopped outside a room.

The door was open.

Inside was a small guest room.

The bed was made with clean sheets, and a lamp sat on the bedside table.

There was a chair near the window and a dresser against the wall.

Michael stood in the doorway.

"We've been thinking about this room."

I looked around.

He continued.

"We could make it more comfortable for you if you wanted to stay here sometimes."

I felt a sudden ache in my chest.

The room was not large.

It was not luxurious.

But it was a place where I could sleep.

A place that could have been offered before.

Michael seemed to understand what I was thinking.

"I know this doesn't change what happened."

I turned toward him.

"No, it doesn't."

He nodded.

"I just wanted you to know that we're willing to make room."

I looked at the bed again.

For a moment, I imagined staying there.

I imagined waking in the morning and making coffee in Michael's kitchen.

I imagined sitting with Jenna and talking about ordinary things.

It could have been comfortable.

It could have been a good arrangement.

But I also knew I wasn't ready to make that decision.

"Thank you," I said.

Michael looked at me.

"You don't have to decide now."

I smiled faintly.

"I'm glad you understand that."

He stood quietly beside me.

Then he said something I hadn't expected.

"I think I was afraid of how much everything would change."

I waited.

"When Dad died, I wanted to believe I could keep everything else in my life exactly as it was."

He looked down the hallway.

"I didn't want to think about how different things were going to be for you."

I felt my eyes grow wet.

He continued.

"I think I convinced myself that helping you find another place was the practical thing to do."

He paused.

"But I wasn't the one who needed another place."

I reached for his hand.

He held it.

"I should have thought about that before I answered you."

I nodded.

"Yes, you should have."

He gave a small, sad smile.

"I know."

We stood in the doorway for a moment longer.

Then I looked back into the room.

"I appreciate that you've prepared this."

Michael nodded.

"I wanted you to see it."

I turned toward him.

"And I want you to know that I do appreciate it. But I need to decide where I feel most comfortable, not just where there is a bed available."

He seemed to consider that.

Then he nodded again.

"That's fair."

I was grateful he didn't argue.

We returned to the living room.

Jenna joined us, and we talked for another hour.

When Michael drove me back to Danny's apartment, I felt lighter than I had when I arrived.

Not because everything had been settled.

Because I had been able to see Michael's effort without feeling obligated to reward it by changing my plans.

He had offered me a room.

He had acknowledged his mistake.

I could appreciate both things.

I could also take my time.

When we reached Danny's building, Michael walked me to the door.

"Thank you for coming."

"Thank you for having me."

He hesitated.

Then he hugged me.

I held him tightly.

I loved my son.

I had never stopped loving him.

But now I understood that love did not require me to pretend the painful parts of our relationship had never happened.

I could remember them.

I could speak about them.

And I could still welcome the chance to build something better.

When I entered Danny's apartment, he was sitting on the couch with the cream-colored envelope on the table beside him.

He looked up.

"How was dinner?"

I smiled.

"It was good."

He studied my face.

"And the room?"

I laughed softly.

"You heard about that?"

"Michael called me before you got there."

I sat beside him.

"He showed me the guest room."

Danny nodded.

"What did you think?"

I looked around the small apartment.

The uneven folding table.

The familiar mugs.

The couch where my son slept so I could have his bed.

"I thought it was a lovely room."

He waited.

"But I'm not ready to move."

Danny smiled.

"Then you're not ready."

I leaned back against the cushion.

For once, the decision felt like mine.

And that was worth more than I had expected.

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: When Danny Took His Nephews for the Afternoon, I Saw My Older Son Begin to Understand That Family Was Not Supposed to Be a One-Way Street

Michael arrived to pick me up on Saturday afternoon.
