How are you?"

I almost gave my usual answer.

Fine.

Managing.

Nothing to worry about.

Instead, I looked at the cup of tea beside me and told him the truth.

"I'm doing all right. A little tired."

He was quiet for a moment.

"Did you sleep okay?"

"Yes, thank you."

"Good."

Another pause followed.

I could hear faint background noise on his end.

He was probably at home or in his office.

I had spent years imagining what my children were doing when they called.

Now I tried not to fill in the details myself.

If I wanted them to understand me, I had to let them speak.

Michael finally said, "I've been thinking about last night."

"So have I."

"I know I can't change what happened."

I waited.

"But I want to do something about it now."

I sat a little straighter.

"What did you have in mind?"

He took a breath.

"Would you come over for dinner this weekend? Jenna and I would like to have you."

I looked toward the doorway.

Danny was still working.

I thought about Michael's house.

I had visited many times before Walt died.

I knew the dining room, the comfortable chairs, and the guest room that had once been used by relatives.

I also remembered standing outside Michael's home after he had explained why I couldn't stay there.

The memories existed together.

I couldn't erase one by accepting the other.

"I'd like to have dinner with you," I said.

Michael sounded relieved.

"Good. I'll tell Jenna."

I paused.

"But I don't want you to think that one dinner settles everything."

He became quiet.

"I don't."

"I need us to keep talking."

"We will."

"And if I need help again, I need to be able to tell you without feeling that I'm asking for too much."

His voice softened.

"You can tell me."

I looked out the window.

"I hope I can believe that."

Michael didn't argue.

"That's fair, Mom."

Those words mattered.

He wasn't asking me to reassure him.

He was accepting that I needed time.

We spoke for a few more minutes.

He asked about the boys and whether Danny's apartment was comfortable.

I answered honestly.

"It's crowded, but we're doing all right."

Then I added, "Danny could use some help too."

Michael said he would talk to his brother about taking the boys for an afternoon.

I thanked him.

When the call ended, I sat quietly for a moment.

I felt hopeful.

I also felt cautious.

I had learned that a promise could be sincere and still be forgotten once the immediate emotion passed.

I didn't want to punish Michael for that possibility.

But I didn't want to build my peace on words alone.

A little later, Stephanie called.

Her voice was softer than usual.

"Hi, Mom."

"Hello, sweetheart."

"I wanted to check on you."

"I'm glad you called."

She asked how I had slept.

I told her I had slept well.

Then she asked whether I had everything I needed.

I looked around the room.

The cup of tea.

The folded blanket.

The small table beside the window.

The belongings I had brought with me.

"I have what I need for now," I said.

She hesitated.

"Do you think you might want to stay with me for a while?"

I felt my heart tighten.

The offer was different from the one I had wanted months earlier.

Now it came after the letter, the conversation, and the difficult admission that she had not made room for me when I first asked.

I wanted to say yes.

I wanted to believe that everything could be repaired by accepting the invitation.

But I also knew I needed to understand what she was offering.

"What would staying with you look like?" I asked.

She took a breath.

"We'd make arrangements. We'd clear out the spare room, and we'd work out what you needed."

I listened carefully.

"Would it be all right if I stayed longer than a few days?"

"Of course."

"Even if it became inconvenient?"

She was quiet.

Then she answered.

"Yes, Mom. We'd talk about it, but I wouldn't send you away because things became difficult."

I closed my eyes.

That was what I had needed to hear before.

I couldn't know whether the experience would be easy for either of us.

But she was no longer pretending there would be no difficulties.

She was willing to discuss them.

That mattered.

"I appreciate the offer," I said.

"Would you like to come?"

I looked toward the kitchen.

I could hear Danny moving a chair.

Kayla was humming softly as she worked.

I thought about the comfort I had found in their home.

I thought about how much I had learned since arriving.

And I thought about Stephanie.

I loved her.

I wanted to spend time with her.

But I didn't want to move simply because she now felt guilty.

"I'd like to visit," I said. "Let's start with that."

Stephanie was quiet for a moment.

Then she answered.

"All right."

I could hear disappointment in her voice.

I wished I could make the decision easier for her.

But I had spent too long making decisions based on what would make other people comfortable.

I needed to learn what felt right for me too.

We agreed to arrange a visit.

When we hung up, I felt both relieved and sad.

I had not rejected my daughter.

I had simply chosen not to rush.

That afternoon, Danny came into the room and sat beside me.

"Everything okay?"

I nodded.

"Michael invited me to dinner this weekend."

"That's good."

"Stephanie asked me to stay with her for a while."

He looked at me.

"What do you think?"

I considered the question.

"I think they mean well."

He waited.

"And I think I need time."

Danny nodded.

"Then take your time."

I looked at him.

He wasn't trying to persuade me to stay.

He wasn't trying to push me toward my older children.

He was giving me room to decide.

That was another form of kindness.

I took his hand.

"Thank you for letting me figure this out."

He smiled.

"You're welcome, Mom."

I looked toward the window again.

For the first time since Walt died, I understood that I didn't have to choose between loving my children and protecting my own feelings.

I could do both.

I could accept their offers.

I could visit their homes.

I could forgive them slowly.

And I could still remember what had happened without allowing it to decide every day that followed.

That was the beginning of trust.

Not a promise that nobody would hurt me again.

A willingness to see whether things could be different.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: I Went to Michael’s House for Dinner, but the Most Important Change Was Not the Meal He Served or the Room He Offered Me

Michael called just after lunch.
