I'll make coffee."

"You don't have to."

"I know."

He walked into the kitchen.

I watched him fill the kettle.

The familiar sounds comforted me.

The cup placed on the counter.

The cupboard opening.

The spoon tapping against the side of a mug.

These were ordinary things.

But ordinary things had become precious to me.

When Walt was alive, I had taken for granted the sound of him moving around the house in the morning.

I had complained when he left his shoes in the hallway.

I had reminded him to put his papers away.

I had sometimes wished he would let me sleep longer instead of turning on the radio before sunrise.

I would have given anything to hear those sounds again.

I looked down at my hands.

Grief had a way of making the past seem clearer than it had been while I was living it.

I remembered the good things.

I remembered the arguments too.

Walt and I had not been perfect.

We had misunderstood each other.

We had said things we regretted.

We had both been stubborn.

But when something difficult happened, we had faced it together.

I missed that most.

Not simply having someone beside me.

Having someone who knew the difference between the words I said and the things I was afraid to admit.

Danny returned with two mugs.

He handed one to me.

"Careful. It's hot."

I smiled.

"Your father used to say that every morning."

Danny sat beside me.

"I know."

He looked into his coffee.

"I miss him too."

I reached for his hand.

"I know you do, sweetheart."

He nodded.

Neither of us said anything for a while.

Then Danny spoke.

"Mom, you don't have to feel bad about staying here."

I looked at him.

"I know you've said that."

"And I mean it."

"I believe you."

He waited.

I took a breath.

"But I don't want to pretend it costs you nothing."

He seemed surprised.

I continued.

"You and Kayla have done a lot to make room for me. The boys have had to adjust. You've been sleeping on the couch."

Danny looked toward the living room.

"It's only a couch."

I gave him a look.

He smiled.

"All right. It's not the best place to sleep."

I laughed softly.

"Thank you for admitting that."

He took another sip of coffee.

"Mom, when Dad needed help, you took care of him."

"Of course I did."

"You didn't keep asking whether it was convenient."

I looked at him.

"That was different."

"Why?"

I opened my mouth.

Then I stopped.

I had no good answer.

I had cared for Walt because I loved him.

I had cared for my children because they were mine.

Danny was caring for me for the same reason.

Somehow, I had begun treating my own needs as a special burden.

I looked down at the mug in my hands.

"Perhaps it wasn't so different."

Danny nodded.

"I don't think it was."

His words stayed with me.

I had been so worried about being an inconvenience that I had almost forgotten what families were for.

Not to erase every difficulty.

Not to make every problem disappear.

To help one another through the parts of life that became too heavy to carry alone.

That morning, I decided to stop apologizing every time Danny helped me.

I would thank him.

I would respect his needs.

I would offer help when I could.

But I would no longer act as though my presence in his home was something I needed to justify.

That was a small decision.

It felt important.

When Kayla woke, she came into the kitchen wearing her slippers and a loose sweater.

She looked surprised to find us sitting together.

"You're both up early."

"Danny made coffee," I said.

Kayla smiled.

"Then I know he's awake."

Danny gave her a playful look.

She laughed and began preparing breakfast.

I offered to help.

This time, when she told me to sit down, I listened.

Not because I was helpless.

Because I understood that accepting kindness could also mean trusting someone to give it.

The boys appeared a few minutes later.

One asked where his favorite cereal had gone.

The other complained that his brother had taken the better spoon.

Danny settled the argument.

Kayla put bread on the table.

I sat among them and listened to the familiar noise.

For the first time in months, I didn't feel like a guest waiting for permission to remain.

I felt included.

It was not a large apartment.

It was not a quiet household.

But there was a place for me at the table.

And that morning, I understood that the place mattered more than the space around it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: When My Older Children Called the Next Day, I Had to Decide Whether Their Promises Were Enough to Let Me Begin Trusting Them Again

The next morning, I woke before anyone else.
