It's because I have to learn to trust what happens next."

He nodded.

"I understand."

I hoped he did.

Trust was not something I could demand from myself.

It had been worn down by small disappointments, by conversations that ended too quickly, and by the feeling that my needs had become an inconvenience.

It would take more than one evening to rebuild.

But I didn't need to close the door on him.

I only needed to stop pretending the door had never been closed.

Stephanie sat beside me.

"I wish I had known how alone you felt."

I looked at her.

"I wish I had told you more clearly."

She shook her head.

"You did ask me."

"Yes."

"And I said no."

I squeezed her hand.

"Yes."

She took a breath.

"I don't want to make excuses for that."

Those words made me look at her more closely.

Stephanie had always been good at finding a practical explanation for a difficult decision.

She could list the reasons something had happened until the reasons seemed more important than the result.

Tonight, she was doing something different.

She was letting the result remain visible.

"I'm sorry," she said again.

This time, she didn't add anything.

I believed her.

I also knew that forgiveness would not erase the memory of that conversation.

Both things could be true.

"I love you," I told her.

She leaned against my shoulder.

"I love you too, Mom."

For a moment, I let myself enjoy the simple comfort of having my daughter close.

I had missed her.

Not because she had stopped visiting entirely.

Because I had missed being able to tell her something difficult without wondering whether I was asking too much.

I hoped we could find our way back to that kind of closeness.

But I knew it would require honesty from both of us.

Michael stood and walked to the kitchen.

He returned with a glass of water and placed it beside me.

It was a small gesture.

He didn't announce it.

He didn't ask whether I had noticed.

I had.

I took the glass and thanked him.

He nodded.

Then he looked toward the cream-colored envelope.

"Do you think Dad would have been happy with tonight?"

The question caught me off guard.

I thought about Walt's hospital room.

His tired face.

His fingers wrapped around mine.

I thought about how he had asked me to bring the children together.

I thought about the letter and the way Danny had read it aloud.

"I think he would have been glad we listened," I said.

Michael looked down.

"And the rest?"

I considered that.

"I think he would have wanted us to keep trying."

Nobody spoke for a moment.

The boys laughed at something in the living room.

Kayla called out a gentle reminder that they needed to turn the volume down.

Danny smiled toward the doorway.

Life was continuing around us.

That was how grief worked, I had learned.

It did not stop the ordinary things from happening.

It simply made some ordinary things feel different.

A glass of water could become an act of care.

A couch could become a sacrifice.

A letter could become the voice of someone who was no longer there to speak.

I looked at my children.

"I don't expect any of you to become different people overnight."

Michael nodded.

"But I do expect us to be more honest with one another."

Stephanie lifted her head from my shoulder.

"We can do that."

"I hope so."

I wasn't trying to sound doubtful.

I was trying to be realistic.

Promises mattered.

But they mattered most when they were followed by ordinary decisions made on ordinary days.

Michael finally put on his jacket.

Stephanie stood beside him.

They said goodnight to Danny and Kayla, then came to hug me.

Michael held me a little longer than usual.

"I'll call you tomorrow," he said.

I smiled.

"All right."

Stephanie kissed my cheek.

"And I'll call too."

I nodded.

"Thank you, sweetheart."

They walked toward the door.

Before leaving, Michael turned back once.

"Mom?"

"Yes?"

He glanced at Danny.

"Thank you for taking care of her."

Danny gave a small shrug.

"She's our mom."

Michael nodded.

Then he left with Stephanie.

The door closed quietly.

I sat still for a moment, listening to their footsteps fade.

I had spent months wishing my older children would understand what I needed.

Now they had begun to understand.

Whether they would act on that understanding was something only time could answer.

Danny touched my arm.

"You all right?"

I looked at him.

"Yes, sweetheart."

Then I corrected myself.

"I'm tired, though."

He smiled.

"Me too."

For once, neither of us tried to make the answer sound better than it was.

And somehow, that made the room feel a little more comfortable.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: My Son Had Given Me His Bed Without Asking for Anything Back, and I Finally Realized How Often I Had Mistaken Quiet Kindness for Something Ordinary

The dishes were finally washed, and the boys had settled down with their movie.
