You'll have to ask."

She looked toward Danny.

"And we should have asked him too."

Danny glanced up from the envelope.

"Asked me what?"

"Whether you needed help."

He seemed surprised.

Then he shrugged.

"We're all managing."

I shook my head gently.

"That isn't an answer anymore."

Danny looked at me.

I smiled.

"We've all used it too much tonight."

He laughed softly.

"All right. Sometimes I could use a little help."

Michael nodded immediately.

"Then tell me what you need."

Danny looked uncertain.

He wasn't accustomed to being asked that question by his older brother.

He thought for a moment.

"Maybe you could take the boys for an afternoon sometime. Give Kayla a break."

Michael looked toward Jenna.

She nodded.

"That sounds possible."

Danny seemed relieved.

"Good."

It wasn't a grand solution.

It wouldn't change the apartment's size or give Danny his bedroom back that night.

But it was a concrete offer.

A beginning.

I watched Michael and Danny exchange a small smile.

I wished they had learned to talk to each other this way years earlier.

Then I reminded myself that families often learn important things later than they should.

The important question is whether they learn them at all.

Stephanie turned toward me.

"I want you to know that you can call me when you need something."

I looked at her.

"I appreciate that."

"And I mean it."

"I believe you."

She seemed to be waiting for something more.

I took her hand.

"But I need you to understand that I may still be afraid to ask."

Her eyes softened.

"Then I'll ask you first."

That promise meant more to me than she knew.

I had been waiting for my children to notice my pain.

I had been waiting for them to offer help without being told how badly I needed it.

Now I understood that I also had to learn how to speak before my silence became another wall between us.

I couldn't expect them to read every thought in my mind.

But I could expect them to listen when I finally spoke.

And I could expect myself not to dismiss my own needs before anyone else had a chance to hear them.

Michael gathered his papers and placed them back inside his envelope.

Stephanie did the same.

Danny folded his father's letter along its original creases.

He slipped it carefully into the cream-colored envelope and closed the clasp.

I watched him do it.

"Are you going to keep that somewhere safe?" I asked.

He nodded.

"Yes, Mom."

"Good."

He placed the envelope beside him.

For a moment, I felt a strange urge to take it back.

Not because I wanted to keep Walt's words from him.

Because the letter had become something precious, and I was afraid that once it left my hands, I would lose another part of my husband.

Then I reminded myself that the letter had never belonged to me alone.

Walt had written it for our children.

They needed to carry his words into their own lives.

I had spent too long trying to protect everyone from grief.

Perhaps the time had come to let them feel it.

Michael stood to help clear the table.

I watched him carry the empty plates to the kitchen.

Stephanie followed with the glasses.

Neither had done anything extraordinary.

They were simply helping.

But I noticed.

I noticed because I had learned how much those small actions could mean.

Danny remained beside me.

He leaned back in his chair and rubbed his eyes.

"You all right, sweetheart?" I asked.

He smiled.

"Just tired."

I reached over and touched his arm.

"Thank you."

He shook his head.

"You don't have to keep thanking me."

"I know."

I paused.

"But I want to."

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he nodded.

"You're welcome, Mom."

I looked around the apartment.

The table was still uneven.

The kitchen was still crowded.

The boys were still arguing about which movie to watch.

Nothing about the room had changed.

Yet something inside our family had shifted.

My older children had heard what I had been afraid to tell them.

Danny had been allowed to admit that helping me had required something of him.

And I had finally stopped pretending that needing a place to sleep was something shameful.

I didn't know whether everything would be different after that night.

I didn't know whether Michael and Stephanie would remember every word of their father's letter.

I didn't know whether they would always follow through on the promises they had made.

Trust would take time.

So would forgiveness.

But I no longer believed that I had to pretend the hurt had never happened in order to keep my family together.

Sometimes keeping a family together means telling the truth before resentment becomes the only thing people have left to say.

I looked at the three envelopes resting on the table.

They had brought us together because of what Walt had left behind.

What mattered now was what we would do with what he had said.

I hoped we would remember the letter.

I hoped we would remember the old kitchen table he had repaired rather than replace.

And I hoped that, the next time one of us needed help, nobody would wait for a special occasion to offer it.

Because I had learned something I wished I had understood years earlier.

A person doesn't need a perfect home to make room for someone.

Sometimes all they need is the willingness to give up a little comfort so another person doesn't have to face the night alone.

That was what Danny had given me.

Not just his bed.

A place in his life when I had begun to wonder whether I still had one.

I looked at my youngest son and felt my eyes grow wet again.

He pretended not to notice.

I was grateful for that too.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: After Everyone Had Read Walt’s Letter, I Began to Understand That His Last Gift Was Not Something Any of Us Could Hold

The boys came back into the kitchen just as Kayla began collecting the last of the dishes.
