she whispered.

I squeezed her fingers.

"So do I."

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

I remembered Stephanie as a little girl, standing beside me in the kitchen while I prepared dinner.

She would ask questions about everything.

Why did bread rise?

Why did the moon follow the car?

Why did grown-ups sometimes say they were fine when they were obviously upset?

I had answered as best I could.

When she was older, she began finding her own answers.

She became capable and independent.

I was proud of her.

But somewhere along the way, we had stopped asking each other certain questions.

She had stopped asking what I needed.

I had stopped telling her when I was hurt.

We had both helped create the silence between us.

That realization didn't excuse what had happened.

It simply showed me where some of the work would have to begin.

Michael looked toward Danny.

"How long have you been sleeping on the couch?"

Danny shrugged.

"Since Mom came."

Michael frowned.

"Every night?"

Danny gave him a look.

"That's generally how sleeping works."

Despite everything, I almost laughed.

Michael let out a short breath.

"I deserved that."

Danny smiled faintly.

The tension eased for a moment.

Then Michael became serious again.

"Is it uncomfortable?"

Danny looked toward the living room.

"It's a couch."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the answer I have."

Michael waited.

Danny finally continued.

"Some nights are better than others. The boys wake up early, and the living room isn't exactly private."

He glanced at Kayla.

"But we're managing."

I recognized the phrase immediately.

We're managing.

It was what I had told everyone when they asked how I was doing after Walt died.

It was what I said when I didn't want to explain the truth.

I looked at Danny.

"Are you tired, sweetheart?"

He smiled at me.

"Sometimes."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

He looked genuinely puzzled.

"What would you have done?"

I opened my mouth.

Then I closed it.

He was right.

I couldn't give him his bed back without taking the place he had given me.

I could offer to sleep on the couch, but I knew he would argue.

We had reached an arrangement that was kind and difficult at the same time.

Danny had chosen to help me.

That didn't mean I should pretend the cost was invisible.

"I should have asked you more often," I said.

He shook his head.

"Mom, you don't need to worry about me."

I gave him a small smile.

"That sounds familiar."

He looked at me for a moment, then laughed quietly.

I reached for his hand.

"I am proud of you."

He looked embarrassed.

"There's no need to make a big thing of it."

"I'm not making a big thing of it."

I squeezed his fingers.

"I'm telling you what I should have told you more often."

His expression softened.

I realized then that Danny had spent years being the child who made things easier for everyone else.

He rarely asked for praise.

He rarely asked for help.

Perhaps we had all grown accustomed to believing he needed less because he demanded less.

That was another mistake.

Michael stared at his younger brother.

"You shouldn't have had to do this alone."

Danny shrugged again.

"Mom needed help."

"And you gave it."

"Yes."

Michael looked down.

"I should have done more."

Danny didn't argue.

He didn't reassure him.

He didn't say that everything was fine.

He simply let the statement sit between them.

I was grateful for that.

Michael needed to understand his own choices without Danny rushing to make him feel better.

Stephanie looked at me.

"Would you have stayed with me if I'd offered?"

I was surprised by the question.

"Of course."

"Even if the arrangement had been difficult?"

I smiled sadly.

"I would have tried to make it easy for you."

She looked pained.

"That's exactly what I was afraid of."

I waited.

She continued.

"I thought you would try to make yourself small. I thought you would say you didn't need anything, and then I would worry about whether you were comfortable."

I listened carefully.

"I thought I would never know what you really wanted."

For a moment, I saw the problem from her side.

She had been afraid of an arrangement she couldn't control.

She had imagined awkwardness, changed routines, and a responsibility she might not know how to manage.

But instead of talking to me about those fears, she had avoided the situation entirely.

"I might have done some of those things," I admitted.

Stephanie nodded.

"I know."

"But you could have asked me what I needed."

She looked down.

"Yes."

We sat quietly.

I didn't want her to leave that conversation believing she had to choose between protecting her own life and caring about me.

I wanted her to understand that the two things were not always opposites.

A person could have boundaries and still be generous.

A person could be busy and still show up.

A person could admit that helping was difficult without using the difficulty as a reason to do nothing.

Walt had understood that.

Danny had understood it too.

My older children were only beginning to see it.

I glanced at the envelopes.

"Your father didn't expect you to live perfect lives," I said. "He knew you would make mistakes."

Michael looked up.

"Then what did he expect?"

I thought about the letter.

"He expected you to notice when someone needed you."

I paused.

"And to care enough to do something about it."

Michael nodded slowly.

Stephanie wiped her eyes.

Danny leaned back in his chair, looking exhausted.

I wished the evening could end with everyone feeling better.

But the truth was not a medicine that worked immediately.

It took time to accept.

It took time to understand.

And it took time to decide what to do differently.

I looked at my three children.

For the first time since Walt's death, I felt that we were beginning to talk about the real problem.

Not money.

Not furniture.

Not who had the most space.

Whether we were willing to make room for one another.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: The Evening Had Begun With Questions About Inheritance, but My Husband’s Letter Left Us Facing a More Personal Question About What We Owed Each Other

Michael picked up his envelope again.
