8 – The Three Envelopes Finally Rested in Front of Their Owners, and I Realized That Waiting Had Been Harder Than Hearing the Truth

Michael picked up the white envelope bearing his name.

He turned it over once, examining the handwriting.

Stephanie held hers with both hands.

Danny sat quietly in front of the cream-colored envelope, looking at the brass clasp.

For several seconds, nobody opened anything.

I understood why.

Until that moment, the envelopes had represented a question.

Now they represented an answer we were about to hear.

I folded my hands in my lap.

"Take your time."

Michael looked at me.

"You're sure you don't want to open them yourself?"

"No. They're yours."

He nodded.

Then he slipped a finger beneath the flap.

The paper made a soft tearing sound.

Stephanie glanced toward him.

Danny looked down at his own envelope.

I watched them, trying not to let my face reveal how frightened I was.

Not frightened of the papers.

Frightened of what they might mean for the family.

Walt had always been better than I was at making difficult conversations seem manageable.

He could sit with someone in silence until they were ready to speak.

I tended to fill the silence.

That evening, I forced myself not to.

Michael drew out the contents of his envelope.

He looked at the first page.

Then he looked at the second.

His expression changed, though I couldn't tell whether he was surprised or disappointed.

Stephanie opened hers next.

She read quickly at first.

Then she slowed down and went back to the beginning.

Danny still hadn't touched the clasp.

I turned toward him.

"You can open it whenever you're ready."

He looked at me.

"I know."

His hand rested beside the envelope.

"I just keep thinking about Dad."

"So do I."

Danny gave a small nod.

He had always been closer to Walt in some ways.

They shared a quietness that I had never quite learned to understand.

Neither of them felt the need to explain every thought.

Sometimes they could spend an entire afternoon working on something together without saying much at all.

When Walt was ill, Danny had visited whenever his work allowed.

He didn't always know what to say.

But he came.

I had noticed that.

I had noticed everything more sharply since losing my husband.

The people who came.

The people who called.

The people who said they would help and the people who quietly did.

I wished I had paid the same attention when Walt was alive.

Michael finished reading his papers.

He set them on the table and stared at them for a moment.

Stephanie was still reading.

I didn't ask what they said.

I wanted them to tell me in their own time.

Michael finally looked up.

"Did Dad explain any of this to you?"

"No."

"Not even a little?"

I shook my head.

"He asked me to keep the envelopes safe and give them to you together."

Michael looked down again.

He seemed to be searching for something in the pages.

Stephanie placed her papers beside her plate.

Her mouth was slightly open, as though she had started to ask a question but changed her mind.

I waited.

The apartment felt smaller than before.

The refrigerator hummed.

Somewhere in the living room, a toy rolled across the floor.

Danny's younger son appeared briefly at the doorway, saw that the adults were quiet, and slipped away again.

I wanted to laugh at the ordinary awkwardness of it.

Families never stop being families just because something important is happening.

The children still need snacks.

The table still wobbles.

Someone still has to remember where the napkins went.

I looked at the two white envelopes.

Their flaps were torn now.

The papers inside had been read.

Yet the cream-colored envelope remained closed.

Danny ran his thumb over the brass clasp.

"Mom, do you know why Dad used this one?"

"No, sweetheart."

He nodded.

"I thought maybe you did."

"I wish I did."

I reached toward him, then stopped before touching the envelope.

I wanted to let him decide when he was ready.

Michael cleared his throat.

"I don't understand why he couldn't have just told us what he wanted."

I looked at him.

"Maybe he wanted you to read it for yourselves."

Michael looked unconvinced.

"Maybe."

Stephanie picked up her glass and took a small sip of water.

Then she set it down carefully.

"Mom, did Dad ever talk to you about what would happen after he was gone?"

I thought about the hospital room.

The papers on our kitchen table.

His hand around mine.

"He talked about the family."

"What did he say?"

I took a breath.

"He said that life could make people forget what mattered if they weren't careful."

Stephanie looked down.

I could tell the words had reached her, but I didn't know how deeply.

I wasn't going to force a reaction.

People needed time to recognize themselves in a truth they had spent years avoiding.

I knew that because I had spent months avoiding my own.

I had told myself Michael and Stephanie were busy.

I had told myself they would offer help eventually.

I had told myself that asking Danny to give up his bed was only temporary and that I shouldn't feel guilty about it.

All of those things had been partly true.

None had answered the question that kept me awake at night.

Why had I been so afraid to tell my own children that I was lonely?

I had believed that a good mother should be grateful for whatever her children could give.

I had believed that asking for more might push them away.

So I had accepted less.

I had made excuses for them.

And I had quietly blamed myself for needing anything at all.

That was the part I was finally learning to change.

I looked at Michael and Stephanie.

"I don't want you to read these papers and think that your father was trying to embarrass you."

Michael looked up.

"Was he?"

"I don't believe so."

"Then what was he trying to do?"

I looked toward Danny.

"I think he wanted the three of you to understand what he considered important."

Danny finally lifted the cream-colored envelope.

He turned it over, studying the back.

Then he looked at me.

"Should I open it?"

I nodded.

"Whenever you're ready."

He worked the brass clasp loose.

It opened with a small click.

The sound was so ordinary that I almost missed it.

Danny lifted the flap carefully.

Inside was a folded sheet of paper.

He drew it out and placed the envelope beside his plate.

For a moment, he didn't unfold the paper.

He held it between both hands.

I watched his fingers.

They were rougher than Walt's had been, marked by years of work.

I wondered whether Danny was remembering his father too.

Then he opened the letter.

His eyes moved across the page.

He read the first lines silently.

His expression changed.

He looked at me.

Then he glanced at Michael and Stephanie.

"Mom," he said, his voice barely above a whisper, "I think we should all read this."

I nodded.

"Then read it to us, sweetheart."

Danny took another breath and began.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: Danny Began Reading
