Together."

I laughed through my tears.

"I know who I am."

"I know you do."

He looked at me for a long time.

Then he asked me to promise again.

I did.

I had kept that promise in my mind through the funeral, the paperwork, and the long weeks that followed.

But I had not understood how difficult it would be to fulfill it.

Walt had wanted our children together.

He had wanted them to listen.

I had assumed the envelopes were the important part.

Now I wondered whether bringing them to the same table had been only the beginning.

Back in Danny's apartment, I lifted my eyes from the table.

My children were waiting.

I could have told them everything I remembered about their father.

I could have described his stubbornness, his humor, and the way he always pretended not to notice when I slipped an extra piece of food onto his plate.

But I didn't want to turn the evening into a collection of memories.

They had known Walt.

They knew the man he had been.

What they needed to understand was the promise he had asked me to keep.

"Your father made me promise that I would bring you together before I gave you these envelopes," I said.

Michael frowned.

"Why?"

"He wanted all three of you to hear the same thing at the same time."

Stephanie glanced at Danny.

"Did he say what that thing was?"

"He said that what a person receives isn't the only thing that matters."

Michael looked down at his envelope.

"So this is a lesson?"

His voice held a trace of irritation.

I understood why.

Nobody enjoys feeling as though a parent has arranged a test they didn't know they were taking.

I wouldn't have liked it either.

But Walt hadn't been trying to humiliate them.

He had been trying to make sure they understood something he believed was important.

"I don't know whether your father intended this as a lesson," I said. "I only know he wanted you to listen before you opened anything."

Michael rubbed his jaw.

"Then let's listen."

I looked at him.

He had said those words without sarcasm.

That mattered.

I turned toward Danny.

"Do you remember the summer your father repaired the old kitchen table?"

Danny smiled a little.

"The one he insisted we could fix instead of replacing?"

"Yes."

Michael let out a quiet breath.

"I remember that table."

We all did.

It had been a heavy wooden table with a scratch across one side and a leg that always seemed to loosen.

Walt had spent an entire Saturday working on it.

He had tightened the screws, sanded the rough edges, and applied a fresh coat of varnish.

When he finished, he stood back and admired his work.

I had told him we could have bought another table for less than the cost of his time.

He looked at me as though I had missed the entire point.

"It's still a good table," he said.

He had been right.

We used it for years afterward.

The table wasn't valuable.

It wasn't beautiful.

But it had held birthday cakes, schoolbooks, arguments, and family dinners.

It had held us.

I looked at the folding table in Danny's kitchen.

One of its legs was uneven.

The surface had a small scratch near the edge.

It was not the sort of furniture Michael would have chosen for his own home.

Yet it had made room for all of us that evening.

"I've been thinking about that old table," I said.

Stephanie looked confused.

"Why?"

"Because your father always believed a home was made by the people who showed up at it."

I paused.

"He never thought a table had to be perfect before people could sit around it."

Danny smiled faintly.

Michael looked at the table beneath his hands.

I could see him considering the comparison.

Maybe he was thinking about his own home.

Maybe he was remembering the reasons he had given me for not staying there.

I didn't know.

I couldn't see inside his mind.

I could only tell him what I had learned.

"When I went to Danny, he didn't have a spare room. He didn't have an empty bed waiting for me. He didn't have a perfect solution."

I looked toward my youngest son.

"He made one anyway."

Danny's smile disappeared.

He seemed uncomfortable with the attention.

I understood that too.

He had not offered me his bed so that I would praise him in front of his siblings.

He had offered it because I needed somewhere to sleep.

That was all.

But I wanted Michael and Stephanie to recognize what he had done.

Not because I wanted to place Danny above them.

Because I wanted them to stop treating his kindness as something that required no effort.

Stephanie spoke quietly.

"I should have asked you to stay with me."

I looked at her.

"Yes."

She nodded, and tears slipped down her cheeks.

"I thought I was being practical."

"You probably did."

"I didn't think about what it would feel like for you."

I reached across the table and touched her fingers.

"That's what I needed you to understand."

She held my hand.

For a moment, we sat that way.

Then Michael spoke.

"I thought if I helped you find somewhere suitable, that would be better than having you stay with us and making everyone uncomfortable."

I looked at my oldest son.

"Did you ask me what would make me comfortable?"

He went quiet.

"No."

I squeezed Stephanie's fingers before letting go.

Neither answer could change the past.

But hearing them admit what they hadn't considered made me feel less alone with the memory.

For months, I had wondered whether I had asked too much.

Now, for the first time, I heard my children acknowledge that perhaps I hadn't asked enough of them.

I glanced at the envelopes.

The white paper looked ordinary beneath the kitchen light.

The cream envelope looked almost old-fashioned beside them.

I remembered Walt fastening its clasp.

I remembered his careful handwriting.

And I remembered his request that all three children listen before anything was opened.

I had done what he asked.

The next step belonged to them.

I placed the envelopes in front of their respective owners.

"Your father left these for you," I said. "I won't tell you what they mean before you've read them."

Michael rested his hand on his envelope.

Stephanie did the same.

Danny looked at the cream-colored one but didn't touch it yet.

For the first time that evening, the three of them seemed equally uncertain.

I understood that feeling.

I had been uncertain since the day Walt died.

But uncertainty wasn't a reason to keep waiting.

I looked at my youngest son.

"Are you ready, sweetheart?"

Danny glanced at me, then at his brother and sister.

He nodded.

"Yes, Mom."

I turned toward the other two.

They nodded as well.

I had finally brought them to the moment Walt had wanted us to reach.

Whatever came next, at least we were facing it together.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: The Three Envelopes Finally Rested in Front of Their Owners, and I Realized That Waiting Had Been Harder Than Hearing the Truth

I had thought the hardest part of the evening would be telling my children how they had hurt me.
