The other means I have another task to do while I'm already frightened."

He didn't answer.

I hadn't understood that distinction myself until I began living with Danny.

There were plenty of tasks in his apartment.

Laundry needed folding.

The boys needed help with schoolwork.

Kayla had meals to prepare, and Danny had work to get to.

Nobody had the luxury of pretending that life had stopped because I was grieving.

But they didn't leave me alone with every difficulty.

If I couldn't find something, they helped me look.

If I had a bad night, someone asked how I was feeling in the morning.

If I sat quietly for too long, Kayla sometimes brought me tea without asking what was wrong.

They didn't solve every problem.

They made sure I didn't have to face every problem alone.

I looked at Michael.

"I didn't need you to fix my whole life."

He swallowed.

"I know that now."

Those words were small.

They were also the first thing he had said that didn't sound like a defense.

Stephanie was looking at the table.

Her fingers moved along the edge of a paper napkin, folding it once and then smoothing it flat.

"I thought you would be more comfortable with Danny," she said.

I turned toward her.

"Why?"

She hesitated.

"He has more flexibility. His apartment is smaller, but he's always been close to you."

I wanted to ask whether she had heard herself.

Instead, I waited.

Stephanie continued.

"I thought you two would work things out."

I felt a sadness that was different from the one I had carried before.

She had not simply decided she couldn't make room for me.

She had assumed someone else would.

And because Danny had always been willing to help, she had treated his willingness as though it cost him nothing.

"Did you ever ask him whether it was easy?" I said.

She looked up.

"No."

"Did you ask Kayla?"

Stephanie glanced at her sister-in-law.

"No."

Kayla kept her hands folded in her lap.

She didn't look pleased or offended.

She looked tired.

I knew that expression.

It was the look of someone who had done what needed to be done without expecting anyone to notice.

"Your brother has two boys," I said. "He and Kayla have one bedroom for themselves, one for the children, and very little room left over."

Stephanie nodded slowly.

"I know."

"But when I needed a place to stay, they made room anyway."

I paused.

"That is what I want you to think about."

Danny shifted beside me.

"Mom, we don't need to keep going over this."

I looked at him.

"I know you don't want anyone to feel bad."

He gave a small, embarrassed smile.

"You know me."

"Yes. I do."

I reached for his hand again.

"And that's why I need to say it."

He fell quiet.

For years, Danny had been the person who smoothed over arguments.

When Michael and Stephanie disagreed, Danny usually found a way to change the subject.

When Walt became stubborn, Danny could make him laugh.

When I worried too much, Danny would sit with me until I felt calmer.

He was good at making other people comfortable.

Sometimes, I wondered how often that meant he had to put his own feelings aside.

I didn't want him to do that tonight.

Not for my sake.

Not for his brother or sister.

I wanted them to see him clearly.

Michael looked across the table at Danny.

"You could have told us how difficult it was."

Danny seemed genuinely confused.

"What would that have changed?"

Michael opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Danny continued in the same quiet voice.

"Mom needed somewhere to stay. We had a bed. So she stayed with us."

He glanced at Kayla.

"We worked things out."

Kayla nodded.

That was all.

No speech about sacrifice.

No reminder of the inconvenience.

No attempt to make Michael or Stephanie feel ashamed.

It made the contrast even harder to ignore.

I watched my older children absorb the moment.

Michael looked as though he wanted to say something more.

Stephanie's eyes had become wet, though she tried to hide it by looking down.

I knew they loved me.

That had never been the question.

The question was what their love required of them when it demanded something they hadn't planned to give.

I had spent too many months telling myself that love was enough.

Now I understood that love could exist alongside selfishness.

It could exist alongside fear, pride, and the wish to keep one's life undisturbed.

But if love never changed what a person was willing to do, then the person receiving it might still end up alone.

Michael leaned forward.

"I should have come over more often."

I didn't disagree.

He looked at me.

"I thought you needed time."

"I did need time."

He nodded, seeming relieved that I had agreed.

"But I also needed people."

His relief disappeared.

I wasn't trying to hurt him.

I was trying to stop making the truth smaller than it was.

Stephanie reached across the table and touched my wrist.

"I'm sorry, Mom."

I looked at her hand.

When she was little, she used to reach for me the same way after falling down.

She would hold on while I checked her knees, and she would watch my face to see whether she needed to cry.

I had always wanted to protect that little girl.

Even now, I wanted to protect her from feeling that she had failed me.

But she was no longer a child.

She was a grown woman who had made a choice.

She needed to understand it.

"I accept that you're sorry," I told her.

She blinked.

"But?"

I shook my head.

"No but. I just need you to understand that an apology doesn't change what happened."

She slowly withdrew her hand.

I regretted how much that hurt her.

Then I remembered how I had felt when I asked her whether I could stay with her.

I remembered waiting for her answer.

I remembered the way she had explained her circumstances before saying there wasn't room.

I remembered thanking her.

I had thanked my daughter for telling me I couldn't stay in her home.

That memory still made me ashamed.

Not because I had needed help.

Because I had believed that asking for help was something I needed to apologize for.

I took a slow breath.

"I don't want either of you to give me something because you feel guilty."

Michael looked at me.

"What do you want, then?"

"I want you to be honest with yourselves."

He glanced toward the envelopes.

"And these?"

"These belong to you."

I touched the white envelopes first.

"Your father made a decision about what each of you should receive. I won't change that."

Then I rested my hand beside the cream-colored envelope.

"But I won't pretend that what happened between us doesn't matter."

Michael nodded faintly.

Stephanie wiped her eyes.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then one of the boys appeared at the doorway, holding a toy truck.

"Grandma, can I show you something?"

I turned toward him.

"Of course."

He hurried over and placed the truck on the table, careful not to knock against the envelopes.

The little vehicle had one wheel that kept coming loose.

He showed me how he could press it back into place.

I praised him, and he ran off again.

The interruption was ordinary.

It was also a relief.

I had been sitting at that table trying to explain a lifetime of love and disappointment.

A little boy had come to show me a broken toy.

He didn't ask whether I deserved to see it.

He didn't wonder whether I had earned a place in the room.

He simply wanted to share something with his grandmother.

I watched him disappear into the living room.

Then I looked at my children.

"Your father wanted you to have these," I said. "And I want you to receive them with a clear understanding of why they matter."

Michael finally nodded.

"All right, Mom."

Stephanie took a breath.

"We'll listen."

I believed they meant it.

Whether listening would change anything was another matter.

For now, I had asked them to stay with an uncomfortable truth, and neither had walked away.

It wasn't enough to repair everything.

But it was more than I had expected when the evening began.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: When My Children Finally Stopped Defending Themselves, I Remembered the Promise I Had Made to Walt Beside His Hospital Bed

Michael was the first to speak. "I didn't refuse to help you, Mom." He said it carefully.
