The boys had questions. Kayla had to reorganize the bedroom."

He paused.

"It wasn't impossible. But it wasn't nothing."

Kayla nodded quietly.

I felt a fresh wave of gratitude toward both of them.

They had never complained to me.

They had never made me feel that I was taking something away from their children.

But I knew now that accepting their kindness didn't mean pretending it had cost them nothing.

Michael looked at his brother.

"I didn't realize."

Danny gave a small shrug.

"You didn't ask."

There was no anger in his voice.

That made the words harder to dismiss.

Stephanie looked at Kayla.

"I'm sorry. I should have asked you too."

Kayla met her eyes.

"I appreciate that."

She didn't add anything else.

I knew Kayla well enough to understand that she wasn't interested in turning the evening into a contest over who had done more.

She wanted her family to get along.

She also wanted the people she loved to be treated fairly.

I thought that was a reasonable thing to want.

Stephanie turned back to me.

"If you had asked again, I would have tried harder."

I looked at her.

"But I shouldn't have needed to ask again."

She nodded.

"No."

The answer came without excuses.

I felt something inside me loosen.

Not because the past had changed.

Because she had finally stopped explaining why it had happened.

Michael folded his father's letter carefully and placed it on the table.

"I don't know what to say."

"You don't have to say anything right now."

He looked at me.

"I should have made room."

I nodded.

"Yes."

He rubbed his hands together.

"I kept thinking about what would happen if you stayed for a long time. I thought about the disruption, the arrangements, everything we'd have to change."

He stopped and looked at Danny.

"I didn't think enough about what would happen if nobody helped you."

I felt my eyes sting.

That was the sentence I had been waiting to hear.

Not because it solved anything.

Because it showed that Michael had finally considered the other side of the problem.

I squeezed his hand.

"That's all I wanted you to understand."

He held my hand for a moment before letting go.

Then he looked at the two envelopes.

"Have we read everything?"

Stephanie shook her head.

"I think so."

Michael looked toward Danny.

"Was there anything else in yours?"

Danny checked the envelope.

He ran a finger along the inside, making sure no paper remained.

"No. Just the letter."

He placed it beside the brass clasp.

I looked at the three envelopes.

Two had been opened.

The third had revealed Walt's words.

But the papers meant for Michael and Stephanie had not yet been fully discussed.

And I still didn't know what Walt had intended each child to receive.

I had promised to give the envelopes to them.

I had kept that promise.

Now I needed to let them decide what to do with the truth they had heard.

I sat back in my chair.

For the first time all evening, I wasn't afraid of what they might say next.

I was ready to listen too.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: Michael and Stephanie Began Looking at Their Own Choices Differently, While Danny Sat Quietly Beside the Letter He Had Just Read

Stephanie wiped her cheeks with the corner of a napkin.
