I said.

"He wanted all three of you to have good lives."

Stephanie nodded.

"We know that."

"I hope you do."

She looked at me, surprised by my answer.

I continued.

"But he also wanted you to understand that having a good life doesn't excuse you from caring about someone who needs you."

Michael's face grew tense.

"Are you saying we don't care about you?"

I took a breath.

"No. I'm saying that care has to mean something when it becomes inconvenient."

Nobody answered.

I could hear one of Danny's boys laughing in the next room.

The sound made me look toward the doorway.

I thought about the first night I had slept in Danny's bed.

The mattress had felt unfamiliar.

I had lain awake listening to the apartment settle around me.

At some point, I heard Danny get up to use the bathroom.

He walked quietly past the bedroom door.

A few minutes later, he returned to the living room.

I knew he was sleeping on the couch because I had watched him carry a pillow there earlier.

I wanted to call him.

I wanted to tell him to take his bed back.

But I also knew he would refuse.

So I lay still and cried into the pillow.

Not because I was unhappy to be with him.

Because I had finally understood how much my youngest child was willing to give me.

And because I couldn't stop thinking about how easily I had accepted that my other children couldn't do the same.

I looked at Michael.

"You may not have intended to hurt me."

He lowered his eyes.

"But I was hurt."

Stephanie reached for her glass.

She didn't drink.

I could see her trying to decide whether to defend herself.

I knew the feeling.

I had spent years doing the same thing whenever someone told me I had caused pain.

The first instinct was always to explain.

I had been busy.

I hadn't known.

I hadn't meant it that way.

Sometimes those explanations were true.

They didn't always make the hurt disappear.

Stephanie finally spoke.

"I thought Danny wanted you to stay with him."

"He did."

"Then why didn't you just tell us you were upset?"

I looked at her.

"I did ask you for help."

She went quiet.

I hadn't raised my voice.

I didn't need to.

The truth was uncomfortable enough without my making it louder.

Michael rubbed his forehead.

"I don't think any of us realized how serious things had become."

I believed that too.

But I had begun to understand that a person could fail someone without fully realizing what they were doing.

That didn't make the failure harmless.

"I wasn't asking you to change your entire lives," I said.

"I wasn't asking for a new house or a special room."

I paused.

"I was asking where I could sleep."

Michael stared at the table.

The uneven leg made the dishes shift slightly when someone moved an elbow.

Danny reached down and steadied it.

I watched him do that.

Even then, he was making sure everyone had something solid beneath them.

"I should have thought more carefully about what you were asking," Michael said.

His voice was quieter now.

I didn't tell him it was all right.

Not yet.

I had forgiven him for many things throughout his life.

Some of those things had been small.

Others had taken longer.

But forgiveness was not the same as pretending something hadn't happened.

Stephanie finally looked directly at me.

"I'm sorry you felt you had nowhere to go."

I held her gaze.

"I didn't just feel that way, sweetheart."

She flinched a little.

I wished I could soften the sentence after it had left my mouth.

But I couldn't take it back.

For months, I had softened everything.

I had made my grief easier for other people to hear.

I had described loneliness as being unsettled.

I had called fear uncertainty.

I had said I was managing when what I really meant was that I had run out of people to ask.

That evening, I decided not to do that anymore.

Danny moved his chair closer to mine.

"Mom, you don't have to explain yourself to us."

I turned toward him.

"Yes, I do."

He looked surprised.

I squeezed his hand.

"Not because I owe anyone an explanation for needing help. Because I want my family to understand what happened."

He nodded slowly.

Kayla sat quietly beside him.

I could tell she was listening to every word, but she didn't interrupt.

I was grateful.

She had already given me more than I had any right to expect.

Now I needed to speak honestly in front of the people who had not.

I looked at the envelopes again.

"Your father wanted these given to you together. He didn't want me to hand them out without explaining why he had prepared them."

Michael glanced at the cream-colored one.

"Did he tell you what we were supposed to learn from them?"

"Not in those words."

"Then what did he say?"

I remembered the last conversation clearly enough to know what I could share.

"He told me that when the time came, I should let the three of you sit together and listen before anyone made a decision."

Stephanie frowned.

"A decision about what?"

I shook my head.

"I don't want to guess."

That was one of the few things I could say with complete certainty.

I didn't know what Walt had written.

I didn't know why he had chosen three envelopes or why one had a clasp.

And I didn't know what each child would think when the contents were finally revealed.

But I knew I had waited long enough.

I had promised Walt I would bring the family together.

Now they were here.

They had listened to me, even if they hadn't liked everything I said.

That was a beginning.

I drew the envelopes closer.

"Before we open them, there's one more thing I want you to understand."

Michael looked up.

I looked at all three of my children.

"I love you equally. But I can no longer pretend you've all treated me equally."

The room became still.

And for the first time since Walt's death, I stopped trying to protect my children from the truth about their own choices.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: My Oldest Son Tried to Explain His Decision, While My Daughter Finally Began to Understand Why Her Apologies Had Never Been Enough

I looked at Michael first.
