17 – The Morning After the Factory, I Began Checking the Records Instead of Trusting Anyone Who Claimed to Know What Happened

I barely slept that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw my father standing in the factory office with the flashlight in one hand and the pistol in the other.

I also saw Frank Malone watching the yellow folder as if it contained something he had spent years trying to keep out of sight.

But the image that stayed with me longest was Raymond standing between my father and me.

He had been frightened.

I knew that now.

He had not tried to hide it, and he had not pretended that he understood everything inside those papers.

That mattered more to me than I expected.

By morning, I had made a decision.

I would not hand the folder to my father.

I would not accept Raymond's explanation without examining it.

And I would not allow Frank to decide which questions were worth answering.

I wanted to know what the records actually said.

When I got out of bed, I went straight to the kitchen.

The drawer was still closed.

I opened it and took out the folder.

For several seconds, I simply held it.

The yellow cover had begun to soften along the edges.

It was an ordinary object, but it had changed the way I looked at nearly every memory I had of my family.

I placed it on the table and brought out a notebook.

I wrote the date at the top of the first page.

Then I wrote three names.

Raymond.

My father.

Frank Malone.

Under each name, I left enough room to record what I knew, what I had been told, and what still needed to be checked.

I did not want those three things mixed together again.

Under Raymond's name, I wrote that he had been convicted in connection with my grandfather's death and had always maintained that he was innocent.

Under my father's name, I wrote that he had told me Raymond was responsible.

Then I added that my father had demanded the folder at the factory without explaining why.

Under Frank's name, I wrote that he had been my grandfather's business partner and had accompanied my father to the factory.

I stared at the page.

It looked almost embarrassingly simple.

For years, I had carried a complicated family history inside my head.

Yet when I separated the facts from the conclusions, I found that I knew very little.

I opened the folder.

The papers were still arranged in the order Raymond and I had established the night before.

I checked the handwritten list of questions.

The first concerned the property records.

The second concerned the repeated dates.

The third concerned the missing document Raymond believed might explain one of the transactions.

The fourth concerned the notes referring to meetings involving my grandfather and Frank.

I added another question.

Why had my father refused to explain his own name appearing in the records?

I circled it.

Then I stopped myself.

A name appearing in a business record did not prove wrongdoing.

It only meant I needed to understand why the name was there.

That distinction became my rule for the morning.

I would not write down an accusation when all I had was a question.

I would not turn a suspicion into a fact simply because it fit what I feared.

And I would not ignore an uncomfortable detail merely because it involved someone I loved.

I started with the oldest documents.

I copied the dates into my notebook.

Some entries referred to money moving between companies.

Others referred to property.

A few contained brief notes in the margins.

The notes were difficult to interpret without knowing who had written them or what the original documents looked like.

I made a mark beside each one.

As I worked, I began to recognize a problem.

The folder contained pieces of a much larger record.

It did not contain every document needed to explain the transactions.

I could compare dates and names, but I could not always establish what had happened between them.

Raymond had warned me about that.

I had understood his words when he said them.

I understood them better now.

I couldn't use a handful of pages to reconstruct every decision made inside my grandfather's business.

I needed more information.

I also needed someone who could examine the records without being caught in the family conflict.

I searched through the papers again.

There were no clear instructions about where the original records might be found.

There was no complete list of the companies involved.

There was no document that identified the person responsible for every entry.

I wrote those gaps in my notebook.

Then I closed the folder and sat back.

I had spent the morning looking for certainty.

Instead, I had learned how much work it would take to find even a reliable starting point.

My phone rang just before noon.

My father's name appeared on the screen.

I watched it ring.

For a moment, I considered letting it go to voicemail.

Then I answered.

“Hello.”

“David.”

His voice sounded normal.

That almost made me angry.

I could hear the familiar sounds of his surroundings, the quiet movement of something being placed on a desk, the faint hum of a machine in the background.

He sounded like the man who had called me to ask whether I had eaten lunch.

Not the man who had held a pistol in the factory.

“Are you home?” he asked.

“Yes.”

“Good. We need to talk.”

“We talked last night.”

“No, we didn't.”

“You told me to give you the folder.”

“And you refused.”

“Because you wouldn't tell me why you needed it.”

He exhaled.

“David, this is becoming unnecessarily difficult.”

“It was difficult before I ever saw the papers.”

There was a pause.

I could almost hear him deciding how to respond.

“I was trying to keep you out of something you don't understand.”

“Then help me understand it.”

“It's not that simple.”

“Why?”

“Because there are things you weren't present for.”

“That doesn't mean you can't explain them.”

He said nothing.

I looked at the notebook beside me.

The list of questions seemed more useful than anything I could say from memory.

“Why is your name in the business records?” I asked.

His silence changed.

It was no longer the silence of someone searching for the right words.

It felt like the silence of someone who had not expected the question.

“What records?” he asked.

“The ones in the folder.”

“You shouldn't be examining those documents on your own.”

“That still doesn't answer my question.”

“You don't know what you're looking at.”

“Then tell me.”

He breathed out slowly.

“Your grandfather's business was complicated. There were many transactions, and people handled different parts of it.”

“Were you involved?”

“I was part of the family.”

“That isn't what I asked.”

“David, I am not going to explain decades of business decisions over the phone.”

“I didn't ask you to explain all of them. I asked why your name appears.”

He stopped speaking.

I waited.

Finally, he said, “Because I was involved in some of the business.”

I wrote the answer in my notebook.

It was the first direct statement he had given me about the records.

It was also incomplete.

“What did you do?”

“I helped with certain matters.”

“Which matters?”

“David, enough.”

I closed my eyes.

There it was again.

The moment when a question became unacceptable because he did not want to answer it.

“I want to understand what happened to Raymond.”

“Raymond made his own choices.”

“That doesn't tell me whether he committed the crime.”

“The court made its decision.”

“And you think that means I shouldn't examine anything else?”

“I think you should be careful about believing a man who has already caused this family so much pain.”

I looked at the folder.

“Did he cause the pain, or did the case cause it?”

My father did not answer.

“I'm going to keep reading the papers,” I said.

“You're making a mistake.”

“Maybe. But I want to know what kind of mistake it is before I stop.”

He hung up without saying goodbye.

I lowered the phone.

My hands were trembling.

I was angry with him, but I was also angry with myself for still hoping that the next conversation would be different.

I wrote down what he had said.

Then I underlined one sentence.

He had admitted that he was involved in some of the business.

That admission did not prove that he had done anything wrong.

But it gave me a clearer question to pursue.

I needed to know what his role had been and whether the records could establish it.

I returned the papers to their proper order.

Before putting them away, I checked the handwritten note about the meeting.

The date remained important, but I could not explain why.

I added a line to my list.

Find the original record of the meeting, if it still exists.

Then I closed the folder.

For the first time since the factory, I felt that I had made some progress.

Not because I had discovered a secret.

Because I had stopped treating uncertainty as something I needed to fill with guesses.

I had questions now.

I knew which ones mattered.

And I was beginning to understand that the truth would have to come from evidence, even if the evidence led somewhere I did not want to go.

Click here to continue reading: PART 18: Frank Malone Finally Agreed to Speak With Me, but His First Answer Made Me Realize How Much of the Past Had Been Left Unexplained

I barely slept that night.
