You don't know who they involve. You don't know what kind of trouble you're bringing into your life.”

I looked at Frank.

“Then tell me who they involve.”

Frank said nothing.

I looked back at my father.

“You keep warning me about trouble, but neither of you will tell me what the trouble is.”

My father shook his head.

“You're being manipulated.”

I thought about that.

It was possible.

Raymond had his own memories and his own reasons for wanting the accusation reconsidered.

He might have misunderstood something.

He might have drawn conclusions that the papers couldn't fully support.

I had not forgotten those possibilities.

But if my father believed Raymond was misleading me, he could have explained why.

He could have shown me evidence.

He could have answered the questions I had asked.

Instead, he had brought a pistol into the factory.

That was not proof that Raymond was right.

But it was a reason to stop accepting my father's assurances without examination.

“I'll read the papers,” I said. “Then I'll decide what I believe.”

My father looked at me with a mixture of anger and disbelief.

“You are making a mistake.”

“Maybe.”

I paused.

“But at least it will be my decision.”

Raymond glanced at me.

I could see the strain in his face.

He had wanted me to understand what happened.

He had probably hoped I would believe him.

But I suspected that even he had not expected this moment to unfold quite this way.

Frank spoke in a measured voice.

“If you take that folder, you will be taking responsibility for what comes next.”

I looked at him.

“I already know that.”

I didn't, of course.

I had no idea what would happen after we left the factory.

I didn't know whether the papers would answer my questions.

I didn't know whether my father would ever speak to me the same way again.

But I understood that keeping the folder meant accepting uncertainty rather than surrendering to it.

That was the choice I had made.

My father glanced at Raymond.

“You've always wanted this, haven't you?”

Raymond looked tired.

“I wanted you to tell the truth.”

“You wanted to destroy me.”

“No.”

Raymond's answer came quietly.

“I wanted my life back.”

My father seemed unable to respond.

I looked at my uncle and tried to imagine him hearing that accusation for the first time.

Or the hundredth.

I wondered what it had cost him to keep answering it without losing control.

He had lost years of freedom.

He had lost his place in the family.

He had lost the chance to defend himself in conversations where his name had been used as proof of his guilt.

And now, after all that, he was standing beside me while my father held a gun.

I felt ashamed again.

I had once thought Raymond's silence meant he had nothing to say.

Now I understood that silence could be the only thing a person had left when nobody was willing to listen.

My father shifted the pistol.

The movement was small, but I felt every muscle in my body tighten.

Raymond immediately stopped speaking.

Frank looked at my father.

“Don't make this worse.”

My father turned toward him.

For a second, I thought they might argue with each other.

Instead, my father looked back at me.

His face had lost some of its anger.

What remained was harder to read.

“David, I am your father.”

I looked at him.

I had heard those words used as an explanation for many things.

He had said them when I questioned his decisions.

He had said them when I refused to accept his advice.

He had said them whenever he wanted me to remember the place I occupied in his life.

I loved him.

That was the painful truth.

Even then, with the pistol in his hand, part of me wanted to believe there was still a good explanation for everything.

Part of me wanted to step forward and give him the folder.

I wanted to make the room quiet again.

I wanted to go back to a time when his approval could settle every doubt.

But I could no longer pretend that love meant accepting whatever he told me.

“You're my father,” I said.

He waited.

“That doesn't mean I can ignore what I'm seeing.”

His face changed.

I saw hurt there, or perhaps anger wearing the shape of hurt.

For a moment, I wished I could take the words back.

Then I remembered the prison years.

I remembered Raymond's face when he had told me he was innocent.

I remembered Frank refusing to explain his own connection to the factory.

I remembered my father's demand for the folder.

I let the words stand.

My father looked at the yellow cover one last time.

Then he told me that I would regret choosing Raymond over him.

I shook my head.

“This isn't about choosing one of you.”

He laughed without humor.

“Of course it is.”

I wanted to tell him he was wrong.

I wanted to explain that I was not ready to declare Raymond innocent or Frank guilty.

I wanted to say that the truth mattered more than the comfort of having someone to blame.

But I could see that he wasn't listening.

To him, questioning his version of the past was the same as rejecting him.

I couldn't change that in one conversation.

I could only refuse to pretend.

Raymond spoke softly.

“David, keep the papers safe.”

I nodded.

I had already decided that I would.

The folder was no longer just a collection of documents from an old business.

It represented the question I had spent my life avoiding.

Had my uncle been sent to prison for something he did not do?

And if so, who had allowed it to happen?

I still didn't know the answers.

I had not found a confession.

I had not uncovered every fact.

I had not settled the question of my grandfather's death.

But I had finally reached the point where I could no longer accept the family story simply because it was familiar.

My father stood in front of me.

Frank remained near the doorway.

Raymond waited beside me.

The factory was quiet again, but the silence no longer felt empty.

It was full of everything nobody had explained.

I looked at the folder and understood that carrying it away would not make me brave.

It would only give me a chance to find out what I had been afraid to ask.

I held it firmly.

For the first time, I was prepared to live with the uncertainty.
