But you haven't explained why you need it.”

My father shook his head.

“Because you don't understand what's at stake.”

“Then tell me.”

He looked away.

The gesture was small, but it felt like an admission.

He knew what I was asking.

He simply wasn't willing to answer.

Frank stepped forward.

“David, listen carefully. Whatever you believe about your uncle, you need to understand that old business disputes can ruin people who have nothing to do with them.”

I stared at him.

“Are you saying Raymond is lying?”

Frank didn't answer directly.

He said that Raymond had been involved in matters he didn't fully understand.

I asked which matters.

He told me that the papers could be misleading.

I asked what part was misleading.

He looked at my father.

Again.

I was beginning to recognize the pattern.

Frank could speak comfortably as long as his words remained vague.

The moment I asked him to identify a specific fact, he looked to my father or changed the subject.

I couldn't tell whether the two men had agreed on a story beforehand.

But I could see that neither was prepared to give me a straight answer.

I turned toward Raymond.

“Why didn't you show me everything before we came here?”

He looked at the folder.

“I showed you what I could.”

“That isn't the same thing.”

“No,” he said. “It isn't.”

His willingness to admit that surprised me.

I had expected him to defend every decision he had made.

Instead, he accepted the question.

He said there were things he had never been able to establish with certainty, and he didn't want me to confuse his suspicions with proof.

That mattered.

For the first time, I could see the difference between Raymond asking me to believe him and Raymond asking me to investigate what had happened.

He wasn't telling me to accept every conclusion he had reached.

He was asking me not to dismiss the evidence before I understood it.

I looked down at the folder again.

Its yellow cover was worn along the edges.

The papers inside had been gathered over time, kept together, and carried into a place that had become a symbol of everything our family refused to discuss.

I could feel the weight of them through the thin material.

It was not the weight of a complete answer.

It was the weight of an unanswered question.

My father noticed me looking at it.

“David, I am trying to protect you.”

I wanted to believe that.

I had spent years believing it.

But protection without an explanation could become a way of controlling someone.

And a father who pointed a gun at his own son while demanding documents had made it very difficult to understand his actions as care.

I asked him what he was protecting me from.

He stared at me.

“From the truth being used against you.”

“By whom?”

He didn't answer.

“Raymond?”

Nothing.

“Frank?”

His face tightened.

I looked at Frank.

The older man had gone very still.

I couldn't tell whether my question had angered him or frightened him.

My father spoke sharply.

“Enough.”

I felt the old instinct rise in me.

Stop talking.

Lower your eyes.

Let him calm down.

It was a familiar instinct, shaped by years of learning which words could turn an ordinary evening into a miserable one.

For a moment, I nearly obeyed it.

Then I remembered Raymond's hand gripping my shoulder when my father first appeared.

I remembered his warning about the folder.

I remembered the years he had lost.

I couldn't let my fear make the decision for me again.

“I need to read these papers,” I said.

My father stared at me.

“You will regret it.”

“Maybe.”

I looked at Raymond.

“But I won't know until I do.”

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Frank moved closer to my father and said something too quietly for me to hear.

My father listened without looking at him.

Whatever Frank said seemed to change his expression.

The pistol remained in his hand, but his attention shifted.

He no longer looked only at me.

He was thinking about something beyond the room.

I wondered whether he had finally realized that frightening me would not make the folder disappear.

I wondered whether he was considering what might happen if I carried the papers away.

I couldn't know.

I only knew that the silence had changed.

Raymond noticed it too.

He moved a little closer to me and spoke softly.

“We need to leave this room.”

My father heard him.

He immediately ordered Raymond to stay where he was.

Raymond stopped.

I looked toward the hallway.

The factory beyond the office remained dark and quiet.

I wanted to believe that the exit was close enough for us to reach without making the situation worse.

But I didn't know what my father would do if we tried.

I didn't know whether Frank would help him.

And I didn't know how much longer I could stand there pretending that one more careful sentence would make them explain themselves.

I kept my hands around the folder.

The papers inside remained unread in all the ways that mattered.

I had questions about my grandfather.

Questions about Frank.

Questions about the accusation that had sent Raymond to prison.

And now I had questions about my father that I had never imagined asking.

I could no longer return to the life I had before entering the factory.

Even if I handed over the folder, I would still remember the gun.

I would still remember Frank's silence.

I would still remember how my father had looked at the papers before he looked at me.

The truth might remain hidden.

But I had seen enough to know that something was wrong.

I wasn't ready to call my father a liar about everything.

I wasn't ready to declare Raymond innocent based on a handful of documents I didn't fully understand.

I was ready to stop pretending I knew the answer.

That was all I could promise myself.

My father waited for me to surrender the folder.

I didn't.

Raymond stood beside me.

Frank watched from the doorway.

And somewhere inside that abandoned factory, the old family story remained unfinished, held together by missing answers and people who were determined not to give them.

I had come looking for proof that my uncle had been wronged.

Instead, I had discovered that the man I trusted most was willing to frighten me rather than explain himself.

That discovery did not solve anything.

But it changed what I was willing to believe.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: My Father Wanted the Folder More Than He Wanted Me to Understand, and I
