15 – The Wedding Dress Stayed on Its Hanger

I had thought that once I made the decision to speak honestly, the next step would become obvious.

It did not.

I still had a wedding dress hanging beside the window.

I still had a phone that could ring at any moment.

And I still had a man I had expected to marry that day.

Nothing about those facts had changed.

What had changed was my willingness to pretend that the wedding itself could settle everything.

I walked over to the dress and examined the fabric.

The dress was beautiful.

I had chosen it because it felt like something I could wear without becoming someone else.

I had imagined the moment I would put it on.

I had imagined the care I would take with every button and fold.

I had imagined looking in the mirror and seeing a woman who was ready for a new chapter.

Now I stood beside it with uneven hair and a small cut near my ear.

I did not feel ready.

I did not know whether I would feel ready later.

That uncertainty was the truth.

I could have put the dress on anyway.

I could have asked someone to help conceal the worst of my hair.

I could have gone through the ceremony and told myself that the morning had been an unfortunate interruption.

The thought came easily because I had rehearsed it in different forms for months.

Whenever something made me uneasy about the wedding, I had found a reason to keep moving.

There was always another appointment.

Another payment.

Another detail to finish.

Another person who had already made plans.

It was easier to complete the next task than to stop and ask whether I still wanted the destination.

I touched the hanger.

Then I let go.

I was not going to put the dress on just to prove I could continue.

That was not a decision against Carter.

It was a decision not to force myself into a commitment while my mind was asking me to pause.

I returned to the desk and looked at my phone.

There were no new messages from him.

I felt disappointed.

Then I felt embarrassed by my disappointment.

I had asked for space.

He was giving me space, or perhaps he was angry and did not want to speak.

I could not tell which.

I reminded myself not to turn silence into evidence.

I did not know what his silence meant.

I knew only that I was still waiting for a conversation that felt honest.

I sat with that uncertainty for a while.

It would have been easy to call him again.

I could have explained my feelings in softer words.

I could have reassured him that I still loved him.

I could have promised that I was not trying to ruin the wedding.

But I had already told him what I needed.

Repeating it would not necessarily make him understand.

I needed to allow him the chance to respond without doing all the work for him.

That was difficult because I had become skilled at managing uncomfortable moments.

I could find the right words to calm an argument.

I could apologize for the part I had played, even when I was not sure I had done anything wrong.

I could make a difficult conversation sound like a misunderstanding so everyone could move forward.

People often praised me for being reasonable.

I had liked being seen that way.

But being reasonable should not mean making myself smaller until no one else had to feel uncomfortable.

I thought about the morning again.

The hair on the pillow.

The sting near my ear.

The mirror.

The phone pressed against my hand while Carter told me we had a schedule.

Each detail remained small on its own.

Together, they had forced me to look at a question I had avoided.

Was I prepared to marry a man when I was afraid to tell him I needed time?

I could not answer that question by pretending the hair was unimportant.

I could not answer it by assuming Carter was responsible for what had happened.

I could only look at the way we were speaking to each other now.

I had asked for an honest conversation.

I had explained that I was upset.

I had told him I was not ready to move forward without talking.

I had not asked him to solve every problem.

I had not demanded that he agree with me.

I had asked him to take me seriously.

That was not too much.

I stood and went to the bathroom.

The mirror was still waiting.

I looked at my hair from the front, then from the side.

It was not going to grow back before the ceremony.

No amount of wishing could change that.

For years, I had thought of my hair as a familiar part of my appearance.

Now I had to get used to seeing myself without it.

That would take time.

I did not have to decide how I felt about my reflection in a single morning.

I washed my face and dried it gently.

Then I left the bathroom without trying to arrange the remaining hair into something that would make me look unchanged.

I wanted to stop treating every visible sign of what had happened as something I had to hide.

I was allowed to be upset.

I was allowed to look different.

I was allowed to need time.

When I returned to the bedroom, the dress was still hanging where I had left it.

I looked at it for a long moment.

Then I moved a chair away from the window and sat down.

I did not take the dress off its hanger.

I did not pack it away.

I did not make a dramatic gesture that would turn my uncertainty into a final answer.

I simply left it where it was.

That small choice gave me room to breathe.

I was not ready to promise that I would marry Carter.

I was not ready to promise that I would never marry him.

I was ready to stop pretending I had already decided.

For the first time since waking up, I did not feel compelled to fill every quiet moment with a plan.

I sat in the room and let the day continue around me.

Whatever happened next, I would meet it as myself.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: I Was
