11 – I Could Not Promise a Marriage Before I Understood the Man I Was Marrying

I spent the next few minutes trying to decide how to speak to Carter.

Every version of the conversation sounded wrong in my head.

If I asked whether he loved me, he could answer yes.

If I asked whether my hair mattered to him, he could say it did not.

Neither answer would tell me everything I needed to know.

I did not want to trap him with a question designed to produce a particular response.

I wanted an honest conversation.

That meant I had to be honest, too.

I could not pretend the morning had left me unchanged.

I could not act as though I was only upset about my hair.

And I could not make an accusation I was unable to support.

I sat on the edge of the bed and looked at my hands.

They were shaking slightly.

I placed them flat against my knees.

Then I took a slow breath.

I had always imagined that courage would feel stronger than this.

I thought it would arrive with a clear voice and a steady heart.

Instead, I felt frightened and uncertain.

I was simply tired of allowing that fear to make every decision for me.

I thought about the first time Carter told me he loved my hair.

We had been standing together after dinner.

He had brushed a strand away from my face and smiled.

I remembered how happy I had felt.

I did not want to erase that memory.

But I wanted to understand whether he loved the person standing beneath that hair, too.

I wondered what he would say if I told him I was no longer certain about the wedding.

Would he ask what I needed?

Would he listen before defending himself?

Would he give me room to speak?

Or would he focus only on the ceremony and the people waiting for us?

I did not know.

That was the problem.

I had promised to spend my life with him without fully understanding how he would respond when I needed something difficult from him.

Perhaps every couple faced that uncertainty.

Perhaps marriage always required some faith.

But faith was not the same as refusing to look.

I rose and walked toward the window.

The morning light had shifted across the floor.

I could see the dress reflected faintly in the glass.

For months, I had treated the wedding as a destination.

If I reached that day, I thought, everything would finally settle into place.

We would be husband and wife.

The planning would be over.

The questions would become easier because we would have chosen each other publicly.

Now I understood how dangerous that thinking could be.

A ceremony could not answer questions we had avoided.

A promise could not create trust where trust had not been tested.

And a marriage certificate could not make uncertainty disappear.

I turned away from the window.

The wedding was not a deadline for my judgment.

I repeated that sentence quietly until it began to feel like something I believed.

I did not have to prove that Carter was a bad man before I was allowed to pause.

I did not have to prove that someone had acted with a particular motive before I could admit that I felt shaken.

I did not have to be certain about the future before I could be honest about the present.

That was the part I had been missing.

I had been looking for a reason strong enough to justify my feelings.

I had treated my own discomfort as though it needed permission.

It did not.

I could love Carter and still ask hard questions.

I could remember the good parts of our relationship and still examine the parts that troubled me.

I could be grateful for the life we had planned without agreeing to live it before I was ready.

I picked up my phone.

My thumb rested over his name.

For several seconds, I did nothing.

Then I lowered the phone again.

I wanted to call him when I could speak without rehearsing a defense against every possible response.

That did not mean I was waiting for the fear to disappear.

It meant I was giving myself a moment to understand what I needed to say.

I returned to the desk and pulled the folded paper from the drawer.

The three questions were still there.

Did Carter love me?

Did he respect me?

Did I feel safe being honest with him?

I read them slowly.

The first question was difficult because love could mean different things to different people.

The second was difficult because respect often appeared in ordinary moments rather than grand gestures.

The third was difficult because I had not been giving myself the freedom to answer it honestly.

I took a pen and wrote beneath the questions.

Can I tell him the truth without being punished for it?

I stared at the sentence.

It was not an accusation.

It was a standard.

I wanted a marriage where honesty was allowed to be uncomfortable without becoming dangerous.

I wanted to be able to say no without fearing that the person who claimed to love me would turn against me.

I wanted disagreements to lead to conversations, not humiliation.

Those things mattered more than whether I could make my wedding photographs look perfect.

I put the paper down.

Then I made a decision that felt small but important.

I would not put on my wedding dress until I had spoken honestly with Carter.

I would not let the schedule make the decision for me.

I would not use the expectations of other people as a reason to ignore my own questions.

I still did not know what the conversation would bring.

But I knew what I would no longer do.

I would not promise forever simply because everyone had gathered to watch me say the word.

PART 11
