I still have feelings for him. But I don't know whether I can trust him the way I did yesterday."

"Those feelings can exist together," she said.

I stared at the floor.

"I wish they didn't."

"I understand. But you don't have to pretend one feeling cancels out the other."

That was something I needed to hear.

I could still love Carter and be uncertain about marrying him.

I could remember the good parts of our relationship without pretending the concerns were unimportant.

I could hope for an explanation without deciding in advance that it would be enough.

And I could refuse to make a promise until I understood what I was promising.

We ended the call a little later.

I remained in the chair, thinking about how much I had wanted the morning to be different.

I had imagined waking up, preparing for the ceremony, and seeing Carter later that day.

I had expected to feel nervous in the ordinary way brides felt nervous.

I had expected to worry about small details.

The dress.

The timing.

Whether everything would go according to plan.

Instead, I was wondering whether I knew the man I was about to marry.

I was wondering whether he respected me.

And I was wondering whether my grandfather had recognized a danger I had been unwilling to examine.

There was no way to make those questions disappear by putting on a dress.

I stood and walked to the mirror.

My scalp was still tender.

The small cut near my ear remained visible.

The sight was painful, but I forced myself to stay where I was.

I didn't want to look away from what had happened.

I also didn't want to let it define everything about me.

I had been humiliated.

That was how I felt.

But humiliation did not mean I had to surrender my judgment.

It did not mean I had to beg for approval.

And it did not mean I had to marry someone simply to prove that he had failed to break me.

I had been thinking about revenge without admitting it.

I wanted Carter to understand how much he had hurt me.

I wanted him to feel the uncertainty I was feeling.

I wanted him to know that he could not simply decide what kind of woman I would become.

Those feelings were understandable.

They were not a plan.

If I allowed anger to direct every decision, I would still be letting the morning control me.

I didn't want that.

I wanted to make a decision I could live with after the anger had faded.

I wanted to protect what my grandfather had left me.

I wanted to understand what had happened.

And I wanted to stop treating my own discomfort as something I needed to hide.

I moved away from the mirror.

My phone was still on the bed.

I checked the screen, then placed it down again.

There was nothing there that changed what I knew.

I couldn't force an answer to arrive.

I couldn't make Carter explain himself before I was ready to hear him.

And I couldn't know what I would decide until I had thought through the possibilities.

But I could choose not to rush.

That was the first decision I felt certain about.

I would not let the wedding schedule decide my future.

I would not let the fifteen million dollars become a bargaining tool.

I would not let my fear of being embarrassed make me ignore questions that mattered.

And I would not pretend that love required me to accept whatever happened simply because I had once promised to stay.

I returned to the chair beside the window.

For the first time that day, I let myself sit without trying to solve the entire problem.

I could feel the grief of losing the future I had imagined.

I could feel the anger of being hurt.

I could feel the uncertainty of not knowing what Carter had done or what he would say.

None of those feelings needed to disappear before I could think clearly.

They could be there while I made a careful decision.

I thought about the trust.

The money would remain protected.

I had time to understand my options.

I had Margaret's help.

And I had my grandfather's advice, even though I could no longer ask him to explain it.

I wished I had listened more carefully when he was alive.

I couldn't change that.

But I could honor what he had tried to teach me by refusing to abandon my judgment now.

I looked toward the wedding dress one final time.

It was still beautiful.

It still represented the plans I had made and the hopes I had carried into that morning.

But it no longer represented a future I was required to accept.

I could leave it hanging.

I could wait.

I could decide when I was ready.

And whatever happened next, I would not confuse the end of a plan with the end of my life.

I had woken up believing that someone had taken away the one thing that made me feel beautiful.

By then, I was beginning to understand that my appearance had never been the only thing I brought into a relationship.

I had my judgment.

I had my independence.

I had the ability to choose.

Those things were still mine.

And I intended to keep them.

<a
