7 – I Had Spent Months Preparing to Become Carter’s Wife, but Sitting Alone With My Grandfather’s Advice Made Me Question What I Was Really Promising

I used to think that commitment meant refusing to walk away.

If you loved someone, you stayed.

If you made a promise, you kept it.

If you planned a future together, you worked through the difficulties that came along.

Those ideas had shaped the way I approached relationships.

They had also made it harder for me to recognize when staying was no longer the same as being loyal.

I had never considered myself someone who gave up easily.

When Carter and I disagreed, I tried to understand his position.

When he became distant, I gave him space.

When he asked questions about my future, I answered because I believed a couple should be able to talk openly.

I thought those were signs of a healthy relationship.

Some of them probably were.

But I had also learned to explain away my own discomfort.

I had convinced myself that patience meant waiting until every concern disappeared.

I had treated my doubts as problems I needed to solve before Carter noticed them.

That morning, I finally asked myself why.

I was sitting in the same chair beside the window.

The light had shifted across the floor.

My phone was within reach, but I wasn't looking at it.

I was thinking about the promise I had made to my grandfather.

He had asked me to be careful about the people I allowed into my life.

I had promised to remember his advice.

Then I had fallen in love and believed that remembering the warning meant I had to prove it wrong.

I had treated his concern as something to overcome.

I should have treated it as something to consider.

That distinction was painful.

I had wanted Carter and my grandfather to understand each other.

I had wanted them to respect one another.

I had imagined that eventually my grandfather would see what I saw in Carter, and the questions would become unnecessary.

But my grandfather had died before that could happen.

I had been left with his advice and my own interpretation of it.

For a long time, I had chosen the interpretation that allowed me to continue without changing anything.

Now I had to reconsider.

I looked at the door leading to the room where my wedding dress hung.

I thought about the vows I had planned to make.

I had intended to promise Carter loyalty, patience, and a willingness to face life's difficulties together.

Those were serious promises.

I didn't want to make them carelessly.

If I stood beside him that day, I wanted to mean every word.

I didn't want to say them because people were waiting.

I didn't want to say them because the invitations had been printed.

And I didn't want to say them because I was afraid that calling off the wedding would make me look foolish.

A marriage could not be built on the fear of embarrassment.

I knew that.

Yet the thought of abandoning the plans still made my stomach tighten.

I imagined the questions that would follow.

People would want to know what happened.

Some might assume I had changed my mind without a good reason.

Others might blame the unusual circumstances of the morning.

I could already imagine the awkward conversations.

The thought made me want to hide.

Then I remembered that the person whose opinion mattered most in this decision was the person who would have to live with it.

Me.

I could not make a marriage work by convincing everyone else that it was a good idea.

I could only decide whether I believed in the relationship enough to enter it freely.

That was the question I needed to answer.

I stood and walked toward the dress.

I stopped just short of touching it.

The fabric was smooth where it hung.

I remembered the day I had chosen it.

I had spent time deciding what I wanted, changing my mind about small details, and trying to imagine how I would feel when the day finally arrived.

I had been excited.

I had been nervous.

I had believed I was moving toward a future I wanted.

I didn't regret those feelings.

They had been real.

But they belonged to the person I had been before that morning.

The person standing in front of the dress now had new questions.

I couldn't ignore them simply because the earlier version of me had made plans.

I returned to the chair and called Margaret.

"I think I understand something I didn't understand before."

"What is that?"

"I thought keeping my promise to Carter meant going through with the wedding unless I had a definite reason not to."

"And now?"

"Now I think I need a definite reason to go through with it."

Margaret was quiet for a moment.

"That is a different way of looking at it."

"I know."

I looked toward the mirror.

"I don't want to punish him for something I can't prove. But I also don't want to pretend that nothing has changed."

"You don't have to do either."

Her answer was simple.

I had been treating the situation as though I had only two choices.

I could trust Carter completely and proceed with the wedding.

Or I could accuse him of hurting me and walk away.

Margaret reminded me that I could take time to understand what had happened.

I could ask questions.

I could protect my interests.

And I could refuse to make a promise until I was ready.

I felt grateful for that.

"I don't want the money to influence my decision," I said.

"Then keep it separate from the question of whether you want to marry him."

"The trust will stay as it is."

"That sounds wise."

We spoke a little longer.

Margaret reminded me that the trust had been established to protect my interests and that any financial decisions needed to be made according to its terms.

She didn't tell me what to do about Carter.

She didn't need to.

The decision was mine.

After we ended the call, I sat quietly and considered what I wanted from a marriage.

I wanted honesty.

I wanted respect.

I wanted to feel safe enough to disagree without worrying that disagreement would be used against me.

I wanted a partner who could accept my decisions even when they were inconvenient.

Those things sounded ordinary when I listed them.

They were also essential.

I didn't want a marriage in which I had to keep proving that I was worthy of kindness.

I didn't want to spend years guessing which version of a person I would come home to.

And I didn't want to be afraid that saying no would lead to humiliation.

I had never thought of those possibilities as part of my future with Carter.

Now I couldn't ignore them.

I touched my scalp again.

The roughness reminded me that whatever had happened that morning had already changed the way I saw the relationship.

Even if I eventually learned that my suspicions were wrong, I would still need to understand why I had become so uncertain about the man I intended to marry.

Trust could be damaged by a specific act.

It could also be weakened by a long series of unanswered questions.

I didn't yet know which had happened between Carter and me.

But I knew that pretending I felt secure would not make me secure.

I rose and returned to the mirror.

I examined my face carefully.

I looked tired.

I looked frightened.

I also looked like someone who was beginning to take herself seriously.

That mattered more than I expected.

I had spent so much time worrying about whether Carter would find me attractive that I had forgotten to ask whether I felt respected.

I had spent so much time hoping my grandfather would approve of my relationship that I had forgotten his real wish was for me to make my own decision.

And I had spent so much time preparing for a wedding that I had stopped thinking about the marriage itself.

I couldn't change those things now.

I could only choose what to do with what I understood.

I moved away from the mirror and returned to the bed.

My phone remained silent.

I didn't know whether Carter would contact me.

I didn't know whether he would explain anything.

And I didn't know whether the wedding would take place.

For the first time, I accepted that I didn't need to answer all three questions immediately.

I needed to decide what I could honestly promise.

I needed to remember that my grandfather's trust was there to protect my future, not to purchase anyone's affection.

And I needed to stop confusing a completed plan with an obligation to continue.

The dress was still waiting.

The day was still moving forward.

But I no longer felt that I had to become Carter's wife simply because I had once been certain that I wanted to.

I was allowed to reconsider.

I was allowed to ask for answers.

And I was allowed to protect myself while I decided whether the love I had believed in was enough to build a life around.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: I Finally Stopped Asking How I Could Save My Wedding and Began Asking Whether the Life Waiting After It Was One I Truly Wanted

I used to think that commitment meant refusing to walk away.
