I admitted. "It isn't."

She didn't press me.

I told her I had been thinking about my grandfather and the questions he had raised about Carter.

I explained that I was beginning to see how often I had dismissed those concerns because I wanted the relationship to succeed.

Margaret listened carefully.

"Your grandfather cared about you," she said. "He wanted you to have a good life."

"I know."

"He also knew that money can complicate a relationship."

I looked down at my hands.

"Do you think he was right about Carter?"

"I think he saw things that concerned him. I can't tell you what those things mean now without evidence."

Her answer was exactly what I expected.

Margaret had known my grandfather for twenty-two years.

She had helped him manage his estate and investments, and she had been involved in establishing the trust that held my inheritance.

She understood the financial side of my life.

But she had never pretended to know everything about my personal relationships.

That was one reason I trusted her.

She wouldn't turn suspicion into certainty just to make me feel better.

"I don't want to make a decision because I'm angry," I told her.

"Then don't."

"I also don't want to make a decision because I'm afraid of being alone."

"That is equally important."

I leaned back in the chair.

The answer was simple.

Living by it would be harder.

I had imagined spending my life with Carter.

I had pictured ordinary mornings, shared meals, and the small routines that made a home feel like a home.

I had thought that if we loved each other enough, we could work through whatever difficulties came our way.

But that belief depended on something I had never questioned.

Both people had to want the same kind of relationship.

Both people had to respect the other person's boundaries.

And both people had to be willing to tell the truth.

I couldn't build a marriage on the hope that those things would eventually appear.

"I want to make sure the trust remains protected," I said.

"It will remain subject to its existing terms. We'll review anything you need to understand before you make a financial decision."

"And I don't want Carter involved in decisions that belong to me."

"That is your right."

I let those words settle.

Your right.

Not a favor.

Not something I had to earn by being a good fiancée.

My right.

I thanked Margaret for staying available to me.

She reminded me that I didn't need to settle every question that morning.

Then we ended the call.

I sat quietly for another minute.

The room seemed less frightening than it had when I first woke up.

Nothing about my appearance had changed.

Nothing about Carter had been explained.

But I was beginning to understand that uncertainty did not have to make me helpless.

I could wait for answers without surrendering control of my life.

I could feel hurt without allowing the hurt to make every decision.

And I could protect the inheritance my grandfather had left me without treating it as a weapon.

The fifteen million dollars would remain in the trust.

For now, that was enough.

I rose from the chair and went to the bathroom.

The mirror was waiting.

I stood in front of it and examined my scalp again.

The sight still hurt.

I didn't pretend otherwise.

But I forced myself to look at my face rather than the missing hair.

My eyes were tired.

My mouth was set in a line I hardly recognized.

I looked like someone who had been frightened and was trying to recover.

That was the truth.

I didn't need to look stronger than I felt.

I only needed to stop treating my pain as proof that I was weak.

I touched the small cut near my ear.

Then I lowered my hand.

I was not going to let Carter's opinion of my appearance become the measure of my worth.

I was not going to let my grandfather's money become the reason I stayed in a relationship that no longer felt right.

And I was not going to marry someone merely because I had already spent months preparing to do so.

I had made plans.

Plans could change.

That didn't make the time I had spent on them worthless.

It meant I was allowed to respond when life gave me a reason to reconsider.

I returned to the bedroom and looked at the dress one more time.

This time, I didn't feel compelled to put it on.

I simply left it where it was.

For the first time that morning, I was no longer trying to become the bride I had imagined.

I was trying to understand the woman I actually was.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Fifteen Million Dollars Had Never Been Mine to Use Carelessly, and My Grandfather’s Trust Was Suddenly the One Thing I Could Rely On

I didn't know how much of my life I had spent trying to keep everyone comfortable until I finally stopped doing it.
