Tell me what you're thinking."

I looked down at my phone.

"I'm not asking you to do anything reckless. I want to understand exactly where things stand."

"That's sensible."

"I want to make sure nothing can happen to the money without my knowledge."

"Then we'll review the documents and confirm the current arrangements."

Her response was so ordinary that I almost laughed.

I had spent the morning feeling as though the ground beneath me had disappeared.

Margaret was talking about documents.

Conditions.

Arrangements.

The things that could still be checked and verified.

It was comforting.

I had always appreciated that about her.

She never tried to make a problem sound smaller than it was.

She simply identified what could be done about it.

"There's something else," I said.

"Go ahead."

"I need you to understand that I may not go through with the wedding."

Margaret didn't gasp or ask whether I was certain.

She didn't remind me how much had already been spent.

She didn't tell me that people would talk.

She only asked whether I was making the decision because I was frightened or because something about Carter had changed the way I saw him.

I considered the question.

"I don't know yet," I admitted.

"But I don't want to marry someone just because I'm afraid of disappointing everyone."

"That's a good reason to pause."

I leaned back in the chair.

The word pause sounded different from cancel.

Cancel felt final.

Pause gave me room to breathe.

For the moment, I needed room.

Margaret reminded me that my grandfather had established the trust to protect my interests, not to make my decisions for me.

The distinction mattered.

My grandfather, Arthur Bennett, had been a careful man.

He didn't trust people simply because they spoke confidently.

He paid attention to what they did when they thought no one important was watching.

He had also been patient with me.

When I was younger, I sometimes mistook his caution for pessimism.

I thought he worried too much about other people's motives.

He would listen to my plans, ask a few questions, and then wait for me to notice the problem myself.

He rarely told me what to think.

He wanted me to learn how to think.

Three years before that morning, shortly before he died, he had spoken to me about love and money.

We had been sitting together when he took my hand.

He told me that a good partner would want to build a future with me, while someone interested in my fortune might try to make my future serve his own ambitions.

At the time, I had promised to remember his advice.

I had meant it.

Then Carter came into my life.

He was charming, confident, and comfortable around people who had money.

He knew how to speak to older relatives.

He remembered small details about my friends.

He could make a casual dinner feel like a special occasion.

I liked being with him.

I liked the way he made plans without seeming uncertain.

I liked that he appeared to know exactly what he wanted from life.

Perhaps I had mistaken certainty for character.

Perhaps I had simply wanted to believe that the two things were the same.

Margaret's voice brought me back to the present.

"Rachel, I want to ask you something, and I need you to answer honestly."

"All right."

"Have you ever felt that Carter was more interested in your financial position than in you?"

I didn't answer immediately.

The question was not new.

My grandfather had asked a version of it years earlier.

I had dismissed it then because I thought he had misunderstood Carter.

I wanted my grandfather to like the man I had chosen.

I wanted his approval.

Instead, he had watched Carter carefully and raised concerns that I didn't want to hear.

"I thought about it before," I said.

"And what did you decide?"

"That I was being unfair to him."

Margaret let the silence continue.

I appreciated that she didn't rush to fill it.

When I spoke again, my voice was quieter.

"I don't know whether I was being fair to Carter or unfair to myself."

"Those are two different questions."

"I know."

I looked toward the mirror.

My reflection still startled me.

But for the first time, I wasn't studying my missing hair.

I was trying to understand the woman who had ignored her own doubts because she wanted a wedding to work.

I felt ashamed.

Not because I had trusted someone.

Trust was not a weakness by itself.

I felt ashamed because I had noticed things that bothered me and then explained them away before I had given myself time to understand them.

Carter's confidence had impressed me.

His attention had made me feel chosen.

His affection had convinced me that the doubts I sometimes felt were unimportant.

I had never wanted to be the woman who judged a man because he might benefit from marrying her.

I had wanted to believe that love was enough to make money irrelevant.

But money had never been irrelevant.

It was part of my life, just as it was part of my grandfather's legacy.

The question was whether Carter respected that reality or saw it as an opportunity.

"Margaret," I said, "I want the trust left exactly as it is until I understand what I'm dealing with."

"That is entirely reasonable."

"I don't want to move anything in anger."

"Good."

"And I don't want Carter making decisions about it."

"He has no authority to do so merely because he is your fiancé."

Her answer was firm.

I felt something loosen in my chest.

I had not realized how much I needed to hear that.

The money was not his.

The decisions were not his.

And my wedding did not give him any special claim over either.

I looked down at the phone again.

"What would you advise if I decided not to marry him today?"

"I would advise you to make that decision based on what you know, not on what anyone expects from you."

"And if I decide I need more answers first?"

"Then we work through the facts carefully."

I nodded, even though she couldn't see me.

"That's why I called you."

"I know, Rachel."

Her words reminded me of my grandfather.

He had trusted Margaret for twenty-two years.

She had helped him manage his estate, oversee his investments, and create the legal structure that would eventually protect the fortune he left me.

She had never treated me as though the money made me special.

She treated me as though the responsibility made it important to be careful.

That was a difference I had come to appreciate.

My grandfather had also noticed something about Carter early in our relationship.

He had wondered why a man who appeared so sure of himself seemed so interested in my financial circumstances.

At the time, I had defended Carter.

I told myself that my grandfather was being protective.

I thought he didn't understand how much Carter cared about me.

Now, sitting alone on the morning of my wedding, I wondered whether my grandfather had seen something I had refused to see.

I didn't like the thought.

It made me question my judgment.

It also made me grateful that he had taken the time to protect me.

I told Margaret I wanted to keep the trust untouched.

She agreed.

We would review the relevant documents, confirm the existing protections, and avoid any unnecessary changes while I considered what to do about the wedding.

No sudden transfers.

No emotional decisions.

No signatures simply because someone wanted an answer immediately.

I felt steadier by the time we ended the call.

Not happy.

Not certain.

Steadier.

There was still the matter of Carter.

I hadn't spoken to him.

I hadn't heard an explanation.

I didn't even know whether he would contact me before the ceremony.

A part of me wanted him to call and sound concerned.

I wanted him to ask whether I was all right.

I wanted him to tell me that he had no idea what had happened and that we would find out together.

The fact that I still wanted those things bothered me.

It meant that some part of me was still hoping for the man I had believed I was marrying.

I couldn't simply switch that feeling off.

But I could stop allowing it to make my decisions.

I walked back to the mirror.

My hair had always been something I used to make myself feel more confident.

I liked the weight of it against my back.

I liked brushing it before bed.

I liked the way it looked when the light caught the brown strands.

Losing it had felt like losing a part of my identity.

Yet my face was still mine.

My memories were still mine.

My grandfather's lessons were still mine.

And the fifteen million dollars in the trust remained protected while I decided what kind of future I wanted.

I didn't smile.

I wasn't ready for that.

Instead, I stood there until I could look at myself without immediately turning away.

Then I made a decision.

I would not let anyone rush me into marrying Carter.

Not my family.

Not the wedding guests.

Not the man himself.

If I went forward with the ceremony, it would be because I had chosen to do so freely.

And if I walked away, I would not apologize for protecting myself.

I didn't yet know which choice I would make.

But I finally understood that I was allowed to make one.
