My stomach had been too tight, and every time I considered food, another question had pushed its way into my thoughts.

I drank slowly and stood by the counter.

The house felt different now that I had stopped waiting for the wedding to pull me forward. The rooms were familiar, but the day no longer seemed to belong to a plan that had already been decided.

I was allowed to change that plan.

I repeated the thought while I washed the glass and placed it beside the sink.

Then I returned to the bedroom.

The inheritance had been on my mind since I first remembered Arthur's warning. I had begun to wonder whether Carter's interest in me had ever been connected to the money, even though I could not point to anything that proved it.

That uncertainty troubled me because I did not want suspicion to become the lens through which I viewed every part of our relationship.

I also did not want to be naïve.

There had to be a way to protect myself without treating every person as a possible threat.

Margaret's advice came back to me.

Protect the trust because it is yours to protect, not because you need it to prove anything to him.

I sat at the desk and opened the drawer.

The folded list was still there.

I read the questions again, then placed the paper beside the wedding schedule.

The two documents looked strangely similar.

One contained the arrangements for a day I had once expected to follow without hesitation. The other contained questions I had finally allowed myself to ask.

The schedule assumed I knew what I wanted.

The list admitted that I did not.

I took a pen and wrote a short note beneath the questions.

Do not make a decision about money out of fear.

I underlined it once.

The trust was not a test of Carter's love. It was not a prize he had to earn, and it was not something I needed to hide as punishment for disappointing me.

It was part of my grandfather's plan for my future.

I could keep it protected while I worked out what that future should look like.

I did not need to announce the amount to anyone. I did not need to threaten Carter with it, and I did not need to make promises about how it would be used.

I only needed to respect the arrangements Arthur had made and make sure I understood any decision that affected them.

That was a practical responsibility, not a romantic declaration.

I returned the pen to the desk.

For years, I had wanted my inheritance to remain invisible in my relationship. I wanted Carter to see me as Rachel, not as someone connected to a large sum of money.

But keeping it out of everyday conversations had not meant I could ignore the possibility that it might affect the choices we made.

The answer was not to assume the worst.

The answer was to be clear about what belonged to me and what I was willing to share in a future relationship.

Those were questions I could address if we reached that point.

I did not need to settle them all that morning.

My phone remained beside the photograph. I checked it once, but there were no new messages.

I set it down again.

I was learning that not every silence needed an immediate interpretation. Sometimes the most responsible thing I could do was wait for more information rather than invent an explanation.

That applied to Carter.

It applied to the person who had shaved my head.

It applied to the future I had spent months imagining.

I could not know everything yet.

I could still make careful choices.

I closed the drawer and stood up.

The gown remained inside its garment bag. I was no longer afraid that leaving it there meant I had failed to become the person I wanted to be.

I had chosen the dress because I wanted to wear it on my wedding day.

If that day changed, the dress would still be a dress.

My life would still be mine.

I walked to the window and looked outside again.

The world had not paused because my plans were uncertain. People were still moving through their days, making decisions, changing their minds, and dealing with problems they had never expected.

There was something reassuring about that.

I had thought a wedding day needed to be perfect to be meaningful.

Now I understood that the most important choice I could make that morning had nothing to do with flowers, guests, or fabric.

It was the choice to stop lying to myself about what I needed.

I could not promise that the decision would be easy.

I could promise that I would make it carefully.

Click here to continue reading: PART 20: The Promise I Was Finally Ready to Keep

After the conversation, I walked to the kitchen and poured myself a glass of water.
