My thoughts kept returning to the conversation with Carter, especially the moment when he had asked whether I was canceling the wedding.

I had not given him the answer he wanted.

I had not given myself one either.

But I had finally admitted that I could not promise forever simply because the ceremony was already arranged.

That admission left me feeling both lighter and terribly sad.

I went back to the desk and sat down.

The wedding schedule was still there, its neat rows untouched by everything that had happened. I picked it up, looked at the printed times, and put it back.

I could not make myself care about the schedule right now.

My phone rested beside it.

I turned the phone over, then turned it face up again. I was not waiting for a message, I told myself.

I was only checking.

The distinction sounded ridiculous even inside my own head.

I had spent years believing that a good relationship meant being able to anticipate what the other person needed. If Carter was upset, I tried to understand why. If he was disappointed, I looked for a way to make things better.

There was nothing wrong with caring about another person's feelings.

The problem was that I had gradually begun to treat his feelings as instructions.

If he was unhappy, I assumed I had done something wrong.

If he was quiet, I searched for a way to repair the silence.

If he wanted something different from me, I often gave in before I had fully considered what I wanted.

I had called those choices compromise.

Sometimes they were.

Other times, I had simply been afraid of what would happen if I said no.

I looked toward the garment bag.

The ivory gown was still beautiful. I could appreciate that without feeling obligated to wear it.

That thought stayed with me as I rose and crossed the room.

I unzipped the bag far enough to see the bodice and the pearl buttons. I remembered the fitting six months earlier, when I had stood in front of the mirror and imagined Carter seeing me for the first time.

I had smiled so broadly that the tailor had laughed.

I remembered that happiness clearly.

I did not want to rewrite the memory just because the present had become painful.

I zipped the bag closed.

Then I moved it to the far side of the wardrobe, where it would remain safe until I decided what to do.

It was a small action, but it helped me stop treating the dress as an order.

I returned to the desk and opened the drawer.

My folded list lay beneath a few sheets of paper. I unfolded it and read the questions I had written.

What did I know?

What did I not know?

Could I speak honestly with Carter without feeling guilty for what I needed?

Would I choose this marriage if there were no guests to disappoint and no money for anyone to gain?

I had no complete answers.

Still, I noticed that I no longer wanted to cross out the questions simply because they were uncomfortable.

I wanted to understand them.

I added one more line.

Do I feel free to be myself with him?

The question made my stomach tighten.

I thought about the times I had laughed at something that hurt me because I did not want to spoil an evening. I thought about the times I had agreed to plans I disliked, then told myself that the details did not matter.

I thought about how easily I had defended Carter whenever someone questioned him.

I had wanted people to see the man I loved.

Perhaps I had also wanted them to see that I had made the right choice.

Those desires had become tangled together.

I folded the list and placed it in the drawer again.

My phone vibrated.

This time, it was Carter.

His message said he wanted us to talk in person when I felt ready.

I read it slowly.

There was no demand that I put on the dress. There was no promise that everything would be fine, either.

It was simply a request to talk.

I could accept that without deciding what the conversation would mean.

I typed a reply.

I need a little more time. I'll let you know when I'm ready.

I read the words twice before sending them.

Then I placed the phone on the desk and walked to the bathroom.

I checked the small cut near my ear. It was still tender, but the bleeding had stopped. I cleaned the area carefully and made a mental note to seek medical advice if it became more painful or showed signs of infection.

I could not undo what had happened to my hair.

I could take care of the person who had been hurt.

That person was me.

When I returned to the bedroom, I looked at my grandfather's photograph.

Arthur had always believed that a person revealed much about themselves through ordinary choices. He paid attention to how people treated waiters, how they responded to disappointment, and whether they could admit when they were wrong.

I had once thought he was being too serious about small things.

Now I wondered how many small things I had dismissed because I was afraid of what they might add up to.

I touched the frame gently.

"I am trying," I whispered.

The words were not a promise to make the right decision.

They were a promise to stop avoiding the decision altogether.

I sat on the bed and let the room grow quiet around me.

I did not know whether Carter and I would find our way back to each other. I did not know whether the wedding would happen later or whether I would eventually decide that it should not happen at all.

I knew only that I could no longer pretend my doubts were unimportant.

The morning had not given me the answers I wanted.

It had forced me to admit which questions I could no longer ignore.

Click here to continue reading: PART 18: The Conversation We Had Been Avoiding

I remained beside the window until the sunlight shifted away from the floor.
