A marriage would require honesty, respect, and the ability to face difficult moments without treating one person's needs as an inconvenience.

I had to know whether those things were possible between us.

I stood and walked toward the gown.

This time, I did not unzip the bag.

I placed my hand against the fabric and let it rest there.

The dress represented a choice I had made months earlier, when I had been certain about the future. I could honor the happiness I had felt then without forcing myself to repeat the decision now.

I stepped away.

My phone vibrated again.

Carter's name appeared on the screen.

I looked at it for several seconds before answering.

"Hello."

"Rachel, we need to talk."

"I agree."

"I don't understand what's happening. You called me, told me what happened to your hair, and then ended the conversation before we could work anything out."

I took a slow breath.

"I ended the conversation because I needed time to think."

"About whether you're still marrying me?"

"Yes."

He did not answer immediately.

I waited, resisting the urge to soften my words just because the silence was uncomfortable.

Finally, he said, "I wish you had told me that before."

"I didn't know what I wanted when I called you."

"And now you do?"

"I know that I can't promise you something just because today was supposed to be our wedding day."

His breathing changed.

"Rachel, I love you."

The words reached the part of me that still wanted everything to be simple.

I wanted to believe him without hesitation.

I wanted his declaration to settle the questions that had been following me since I woke up.

But love was not something I could verify by hearing the right words at the right moment.

"I hear you," I said.

"Then why are we talking like this?"

"Because I need you to understand what this morning has been like for me."

"I understand that someone did something awful to you."

"Do you understand why I needed you to ask whether I was all right before we talked about the wedding?"

The silence returned.

I held the phone close to my ear.

"I was shocked," he said at last. "I didn't know what to say."

"I believe you may have been shocked. But when I told you what happened, the first thing you asked me was what I was going to do about the ceremony."

"I was trying to figure out what was happening."

"So was I."

My voice shook, and I paused until I could continue.

"I wasn't asking you to solve it. I wasn't asking you to accuse anyone. I just needed you to understand that I was frightened and hurt."

"I didn't mean to make you feel that way."

"I know you may not have meant to. But that's how I felt."

For the first time in the conversation, I heard no immediate answer.

I waited.

I wanted to give him room to think. I also wanted to resist the old habit of filling every silence with reassurance.

At last, he said, "I don't want to lose you over this."

I looked at the mirror.

"Neither did I want to spend my wedding morning wondering whether I should marry you."

He was quiet.

I continued before I could lose my nerve.

"I don't know who did this to me. I don't have proof that you know anything about it, and I'm not going to accuse you without evidence."

"Then what are you saying?"

"I'm saying that I need to make this decision honestly. I can't let the schedule or the guests make it for me."

"So you're canceling the wedding?"

"I haven't made that decision yet."

"Rachel, people are expecting us."

"I know."

"We can't leave everyone waiting while you decide what you want."

I closed my eyes.

There it was again: the pressure of the day, the expectation that I should turn my uncertainty into a convenient answer.

"I understand that people are expecting a wedding," I said. "But they aren't the ones who have to live in this marriage."

He exhaled.

I could imagine him standing somewhere with his phone in his hand, trying to make sense of the sudden change. I did not know what he was thinking, and I would not pretend that I did.

I only knew what I needed to say.

"I need time, Carter. I need a conversation where we can talk about what happened and what it means to us, without treating the ceremony as the only thing that matters."

"And if we can't do that today?"

"Then we don't force it today."

The words were difficult to say.

They were also true.

Neither of us spoke for a while.

Finally, Carter said he needed time to think too.

I told him I understood.

We ended the call without settling the question of the wedding.

I put the phone down and sat beside the garment bag.

My eyes filled with tears, but I did not try to stop them.

I was grieving the morning I had imagined. I was grieving the certainty I had carried into the day, and the belief that love would make every difficult choice feel clear.

It had not.

I wiped my cheeks with the back of my hand.

I still did not know who had shaved my head.

I still did not know whether Carter's response came from shock, selfishness, fear, or something I had not considered.

I would not invent an answer simply because uncertainty was painful.

The only decision I could make with confidence was the one in front of me.

I would not say yes until I could do so honestly.

I rose and moved the wedding schedule farther back on the desk. Then I returned to the mirror and looked at myself without turning away.

The woman looking back at me was frightened and disappointed.

She was also allowed to choose.

I touched the small cut near my ear, then lowered my hand.

The wound would heal.

My hair would grow.

The questions might take longer.

I did not need to solve all of them before the day ended. I needed to stop treating my own judgment as the least important thing in the room.

I turned away from the mirror and walked back to the window.

For the first time that morning, I was not waiting for Carter to tell me what would happen next.

I was waiting until I could decide what I was willing to promise.

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: The Morning I Stopped Pretending

I checked the time again.
