I had imagined putting it on while someone helped fasten the pearl buttons, then looking in the mirror and seeing the woman I had always hoped I would become.

I had expected to feel nervous.

I had expected to cry.

I had not expected to question the entire future attached to the dress.

I rested my hands on my knees.

There were people who would tell me that I should go through with the wedding and deal with the questions later. They would say that one terrible morning should not destroy a relationship.

Other people might tell me that I should cancel everything immediately.

Both groups would have their reasons.

Neither group would have to live with my decision.

I thought about that until the answer became simple.

I could not make a lifelong promise just to avoid an uncomfortable day.

I could not end a relationship solely because I was afraid of what might be true.

I needed to understand what had happened, and I needed to decide whether the relationship itself was something I could trust.

Those were separate questions.

The first concerned the person who had shaved my head.

The second concerned the man I had planned to marry.

They might be connected.

They might not.

Until I knew more, I would not pretend otherwise.

I picked up the phone and opened Margaret's contact again, but I did not call. I had already heard the advice I needed from her.

The trust was protected.

I did not have to sign anything under pressure.

I did not have to make a decision about my inheritance to prove that I loved Carter.

That last thought had followed me for months without my fully understanding it. Somewhere along the way, I had begun to feel that protecting my grandfather's money and trusting my fiancé were opposing choices.

They were not.

If Carter loved me, he would not need me to put my security at risk to demonstrate my devotion. If he did not love me, giving up that security would not create the love I wanted.

My grandfather had understood that long before I did.

I wished I could tell him I was finally listening.

I placed his photograph in a safer spot on the table, away from the edge. Then I closed the curtains halfway, softening the sunlight that had been falling across the room.

The ordinary movements helped me settle.

I folded the towel I had used earlier and put it away. I returned the earrings to their box and placed the box beside the photograph.

I was not preparing for the wedding anymore.

I was preparing to face the day as it was.

That difference felt small, but it mattered.

I looked at my phone again.

There was still no message from Carter.

I felt a brief sting of disappointment, followed by anger at myself for feeling disappointed. I had spent the morning waiting for him to reach out, as though his first words could determine how I should feel about what had happened.

I set the phone down.

His silence might mean something.

It might mean nothing.

I would not build another story around it.

Instead, I made myself a promise.

I would not lie about how frightened I was.

I would not pretend that the condition of my hair did not hurt me.

I would not accuse anyone without evidence.

And I would not go forward with a marriage simply because stopping would be difficult.

I repeated the promise quietly, not because the words were magical, but because I needed to hear them in my own voice.

Then I stood and walked to the mirror.

My scalp was still irritated, and the small cut near my ear had not vanished. The damage was visible, and I had no way to hide the unevenness without covering my head.

I studied my reflection for a long moment.

I had spent years believing that confidence meant entering a room without showing uncertainty. Now I understood that confidence might mean admitting uncertainty and refusing to let someone else make the decision for me.

I was not suddenly fearless.

I was simply finished pretending that fear gave me no choice.

I moved away from the mirror.

The gown remained in its bag, untouched.

I did not know whether I would wear it that day. I did not know what Carter would say when we spoke, or whether his answer would bring relief or another set of questions.

I did know that I would not let the fifteen million dollars become a weapon in a conversation that had not yet happened.

The money belonged to the trust my grandfather had created. My decisions belonged to me.

I would keep those things separate.

I walked back to the bed and sat beside the phone.

For a moment, I considered calling Carter simply to end the silence. Then I remembered the list in the drawer and the distinction I had made between facts and fears.

I had not yet gathered enough information to know what the silence meant.

So I waited, not as a bride waiting for permission to begin her life, but as a woman giving herself time to think.

The room was quiet.

My grandfather's photograph stood beside the lamp, and the ivory gown hung where I had left it.

Nothing had been resolved.

But something in me had changed.

I no longer believed that I had to preserve the morning I had planned at the expense of the truth I needed.

Whatever happened next, I would meet it as myself.

That was the promise I could make without asking anyone else to approve it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: The Call I Could No Longer Put Off

I sat down beside the bed and looked at the garment bag one last time.
