I had always liked that color because it seemed softer than pure white.

When I chose the dress six months earlier, I had thought it suited the kind of wedding I wanted.

Simple.

Elegant.

Full of people who cared about us.

I had not wanted a spectacle. I had wanted a day that felt like the beginning of a home.

I approached the gown and unzipped the bag a few inches.

The bodice was exactly as I remembered it. The fabric lay smoothly beneath the protective covering, and the pearl buttons ran down the back in a neat line.

I touched one of them through the opening.

I could almost remember the fitting, the tailor asking me to stand straight while I laughed at my own nervousness.

I had been happy then.

That happiness had been real, even if I now questioned some of the assumptions beneath it.

I did not want to turn every good memory into a lie.

People were rarely that simple. Neither love nor disappointment erased everything that came before.

I zipped the bag closed again.

The dress did not deserve to become a symbol of my fear. It was something I had chosen for myself, and I could decide what to do with it when I understood what I wanted.

I sat on the edge of the bed and removed my grandfather's earrings from their small box.

They were modest, not the sort of jewelry that attracted attention from across a room. Arthur had given them to me after I finished school, telling me that a meaningful gift did not need to be expensive to matter.

I held them in my palm.

He had been gone for years, but his advice had remained with me in ways I had not fully appreciated until now.

I thought of the fifteen million dollars held in trust.

The amount had always felt enormous when I said it aloud. It had also felt distant, something managed through documents and careful decisions rather than a pile of money waiting for me to spend it.

My grandfather had arranged it that way for a reason.

He had wanted me to have security without allowing the inheritance to become the center of my life.

I had told myself that Carter understood this.

I had believed that because he rarely asked direct questions about the trust. But silence alone did not prove his intentions, just as curiosity alone would not prove greed.

I had to stop looking for a single detail that could answer everything.

The truth of a relationship lived in patterns, choices, and the way people behaved when they did not get what they wanted.

I placed the earrings back in their box.

Then I looked at my reflection once more.

The uneven hair made me feel exposed. I could not change that feeling by pretending I was unaffected.

But I could choose what I did with it.

I found a clean blouse and a comfortable pair of trousers. Getting dressed took longer than usual because I kept catching my reflection in the mirror.

Each time, I made myself look again.

I would not spend the rest of the day hiding from my own face.

When I finished, I returned to the bedroom and straightened the bedspread. I moved the wedding schedule from the bedside table to the desk, placing it beside the folded list I had made earlier.

The schedule contained times, names, and small instructions designed to keep everything running smoothly.

It could tell me when the ceremony was supposed to begin.

It could not tell me whether I should be there.

I took a slow breath.

I was allowed to change my mind.

I was allowed to ask difficult questions.

I was allowed to refuse a future that no longer felt right, even if I had once wanted it more than anything.

Those rights did not depend on my inheritance. They did not depend on whether Carter had done something wrong. They belonged to me because the decision was about my life.

That was what I needed to remember.

I walked to the desk and picked up my phone.

Carter's name was still there, waiting among my recent contacts.

I imagined pressing the call button. I imagined hearing his voice and feeling the old relief that came whenever he spoke as if everything between us was fine.

I also imagined asking him a question and listening carefully to the answer.

I did not know which version of the conversation would happen.

For now, I put the phone down.

I wanted to be calm enough to hear what he said without letting my fear speak for me. I wanted to be clear enough to tell him what I needed without turning the conversation into an accusation.

I could not control his response.

I could control whether I listened to myself.

I took the folded list from my pocket and placed it in the drawer again. Then I closed the drawer firmly.

The paper had served its purpose.

I knew what I knew, and I knew what remained uncertain.

The next step would not make the uncertainty disappear immediately. It would simply bring me closer to an honest answer.

I returned to the window and stood in the sunlight.

I had spent the morning thinking about how someone had changed my appearance without my permission. I had wondered whether the act was meant to frighten me, shame me, or make me feel powerless.

Whatever the intention, I would not allow it to decide who I became.

My hair could grow back.

My plans could change.

My future did not have to follow the schedule printed on the desk.

For the first time since waking up, I felt that I could breathe without forcing myself to be brave.

I was still afraid.

But I was no longer confusing fear with an obligation to proceed.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: A Promise I Had to Make to Myself

By late morning, the room had grown brighter.
