7 – The Wedding Dress Still Fit the Future I Had Imagined, but I Could No Longer Pretend That Carter Had Earned a Place in It

I had thought that making a decision would feel like relief.

Instead, every choice seemed to open another question.

I could keep the wedding plans in place.

I could cancel the ceremony.

I could speak to Carter and try to understand what had happened.

Each option carried a different kind of pain.

Keeping the plans meant pretending I was ready.

Canceling everything meant accepting that the future I had imagined might never happen.

Speaking to Carter meant listening to whatever explanation he offered and deciding whether I believed him.

I wasn't sure which frightened me most.

I sat at the desk and looked at my phone.

His name was there among the recent conversations.

I didn't open it.

I wasn't ready to see his messages or hear his voice.

That surprised me.

For months, hearing from Carter had been one of the easiest ways to calm myself.

If I had a difficult day, I called him.

If I worried about the wedding, he told me not to overthink things.

If I felt uncertain, he reminded me that we were building a life together.

I had trusted those words.

Now I wondered whether I had relied on them because I wanted them to be true.

I put the phone down.

I didn't want to decide the whole future while I was still struggling to understand the morning.

Instead, I went to the bed and sat beside the garment bag.

The dress was still there.

I unzipped it just enough to see the pearl buttons.

I remembered the seamstress explaining how carefully they had been attached.

I remembered nodding while she showed me the finished back.

At the time, I had been thinking about Carter's reaction.

I had wanted everything to be right.

I had wanted to look beautiful.

I had wanted to make him happy.

There was nothing wrong with any of those wishes.

The problem was that I had begun measuring the success of the day by whether he would be pleased.

I had forgotten to ask whether I would feel safe.

That realization hurt more than I expected.

I zipped the garment bag again.

Then I stood and walked to the dresser.

The jewelry case was open.

I lifted the earrings my grandfather had given me and held them beside my face.

They were beautiful in a quiet way.

I had never worn them often because I wanted to save them for something meaningful.

My wedding day had seemed like the perfect occasion.

Now I wasn't sure whether I would wear them at all.

I returned them to the case.

I didn't need to decide that yet.

There were more important things to consider.

I sat down and opened my notebook.

The questions on the page looked blunt.

What had happened while I slept?

Who was responsible?

What did Carter know?

What did he expect me to do?

I added another question.

If I discovered that the man I loved had betrayed me, would I be willing to accept it because I had already planned to marry him?

I stared at the sentence.

I didn't like the answer that came to mind.

I had spent months preparing for the wedding.

I had invited people.

I had chosen a dress.

I had imagined the ceremony so many times that canceling it felt like admitting I had failed.

But a wedding was not a promise that everything had been perfect.

It was supposed to be a choice made with open eyes.

If I went forward simply because I was embarrassed to stop, I would be allowing the plans to control me.

I had already done enough of that.

I closed the notebook.

Then I walked to the mirror.

The stubble on my scalp caught the light.

I touched it once.

I still hated what had happened.

I hated the way it made me feel exposed.

I hated that someone had decided my appearance was something they could control.

But I was beginning to understand that I didn't have to treat my appearance as a verdict on my worth.

I could be humiliated without being defeated.

I could be hurt without accepting the person who hurt me.

And I could still love someone while recognizing that love might not be enough to build a life with them.

Those truths were difficult to hold together.

I was learning to do it anyway.

I returned to the bed and folded the corner of the garment bag back into place.

The ivory gown remained untouched.

I didn't want to throw it away.

I didn't want to hide it somewhere I would never see it again.

For now, I wanted to leave it where it was.

It was a reminder of the life I had planned, but it was also a reminder that plans could change.

My grandfather had understood that.

He had prepared the trust so I would have choices even when life became uncertain.

I had thought of the inheritance as something that would make our future easier.

Now I understood that its greatest value might be the freedom to refuse a future that was wrong for me.

The fifteen million dollars would remain in the trust while I considered my next steps.

I would not use it to punish Carter.

I would not use it to buy his affection.

I would not risk it because I was afraid that protecting it might make me appear selfish.

It was mine to manage responsibly.

That was enough.

I returned the notebook to the desk.

Then I picked up my phone.

I didn't call Carter.

I didn't send him a message.

I simply placed the phone in my bag so I would have it nearby.

I needed to stop treating every unanswered question as an emergency.

Some answers would require patience.

Others would require a conversation I wasn't ready to have.

I could wait until I was able to think clearly.

I sat by the window.

The morning light had shifted across the floor.

I thought about the guests who would soon expect to see me.

I thought about the photographs that had been planned.

I thought about the vows I had written and the promises I had intended to make.

I still wanted love.

I still wanted a marriage built on trust.

I still wanted a future that felt like my own.

None of those wishes had disappeared.

But I could no longer pretend that wanting something made it safe to accept it.

I stood up and returned to the wardrobe.

The dress hung quietly in its cover.

I touched the fabric once more.

Then I left it alone.

I didn't need to destroy the past to make a different decision about the future.

I only needed to stop confusing the two.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: I Finally Understood That My Grandfather’s
