Mostly confused."

"Those feelings make sense."

"I keep wondering whether I've missed something."

Margaret didn't rush to reassure me.

That was one of the reasons I trusted her.

"Then we should look at what you know, Rachel, rather than what you're afraid might be true."

I sat at the desk.

"I know Carter has asked about my inheritance."

"Has he asked you to do anything specific with it?"

I thought carefully.

I remembered conversations about our future and questions about the estate.

But I didn't want to turn vague memories into accusations.

"Not that I can clearly identify right now."

"Then don't force yourself to reach a conclusion today."

I rubbed my forehead.

"I hate not knowing."

"I understand. But uncertainty is not a reason to sign something you haven't reviewed or to make a promise you don't mean."

I glanced at the notebook.

That was exactly what I needed to hear.

"I want to keep the trust protected."

"It is protected under its existing terms. We can review the arrangements together before you make any decisions."

"Nothing changes unless I understand it."

"That is the right approach."

I thanked her.

Before we ended the call, Margaret reminded me that I could contact her again whenever I needed to discuss the estate.

I promised I would.

Afterward, I sat quietly.

The conversation hadn't solved the problem.

It had given me something better than an easy answer.

A way to move forward without pretending I knew more than I did.

I opened my notebook and wrote down the questions I wanted answered.

What had happened while I slept?

Who had been responsible?

Had Carter known anything about it?

And what had he expected me to do when I discovered the damage?

I stared at the last question.

I couldn't know his answer.

But I could decide what mine would be.

I wouldn't pretend to be fine simply because the wedding had been planned.

I wouldn't hand over control of my future because I was afraid of disappointing people.

And I wouldn't let my inheritance become a substitute for the trust a marriage was supposed to require.

I closed the notebook.

For the first time that morning, the room felt less like a place where something terrible had happened and more like a place where I could think.

The pain hadn't disappeared.

Neither had the fear.

But I was beginning to understand that I didn't have to solve everything before taking care of myself.

I could move slowly.

I could ask questions.

I could wait until I had enough information to make a decision.

I looked at the dress again.

The pearl buttons caught the light.

I still loved the dress.

That surprised me.

For a while, I had thought everything connected to the wedding would feel ruined.

But the dress hadn't done anything wrong.

Neither had the earrings my grandfather gave me.

Neither had I.

I carefully zipped the garment bag closed.

Then I placed it back beside the wardrobe.

I wasn't ready to put it on.

I wasn't ready to cancel the ceremony, either.

I was simply no longer willing to let the plans make my decisions for me.

That was enough for the moment.

I picked up my grandfather's photograph and placed it inside the jewelry case, beside the earrings.

Then I closed the lid.

I had spent months preparing to become Carter's wife.

Now I needed to decide whether marrying him was still the right choice.

I knew the answer wouldn't come from a dress, a photograph, or the amount of money in my trust.

It would come from the truth.

And I had finally stopped being afraid to look for it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Advice I Had Once Dismissed Began to Sound Different, Especially When I Remembered How Carefully My Grandfather Had Watched Carter

I stayed beside the desk for several minutes after closing my notebook.
